I'm considering adding a JL Audio F112 and JL Audio CR-1 crossover to augment the low end of my audio system. Some very astute audio people believe very few current consumer audio speakers can produce visceral bass without the proper integration of a subwoofer. I also read this very interesting article http://www.soundstageultra.com/index...rd-vandersteen where several prominent speaker designers believe only active speakers can produce really great sound.

I may have to begin looking at some active speakers as another alternative.

I've admired actives since first hearing the Meridian m20 eons ago, some of their later attempts at SOTA like the DSP8000 are impressive.

I recently went with Vandertsteen Quatros. Its partially active and 100% analog like the model 5 and 7. it goes very low almost flat to 20 hz and the amp driving the top half only needs to cover 100 hz and up. I'm quite smitten by the package. the footprint is small enough to be placed anywhere, you don't have to deal with a separate sub and the internal bass amp has an 11 band parametric eq, its about as effective as true DSP and can dial out any low bass nodes in your room. The active high pass filter is quite ingenious (balanced or single-ended) its a battery-powered affair and very transparent to the signal.
