People keep asking me for an iPhone recording of what the current system sounds like.

This is a recording I took (audio unaltered but video slowed down to minimize file size) on my iPhone. No external mics, not audio altering.

Song is a beautiful Orthodox hymn that is chanted during our Holy Week (Easter week). It's usually sung by men but in this instance it's woman singing it slightly slower than the normal version during Services.

Gear in the video:
- Alan Eaton Type 45 tube amp;
- Pink Faun Scion Music Server;
- Tobian 12FH speakers;
- Aries-Cerat Helene DAC;
- Signal Projects S30 power filter;
- STEALTH V16-T speaker cables
-Graphite Audio vibration control on gear and Stack Audio on the Tobians.

I personally don't think you can "record" your system and get an accurate representation of all its sonic attributes. So many spatial cues and imaging qualities that get missed. I think it will represent a good idea of the resolving ability of the system and overall balance. A good way to entice your friends to come over for an audio GTG. Make them bring the food and refreshments of course.

I agree with you. The way it records is different than how we hear.

To start with, the iPhone uses a compression/limiting system so it can accommodate a wide range of sound pressures. The bandwidth, particularly in the bass, is also limited by the microphone size. There is also a cavity well resonance somewhere in the high end region.

So an in person audition will be more vivacious with greater bass impact at the very least.
