I just did an experiment and I am sure this is not universal. I was wondering if there was any improvements in a light HD upgrade from the standard CD. In this case I was comparing a pop CD, Lorde's Pure heroin album. The CD is of course 44.1/16bit. I have never bought any HD below 96k.

Anyway, doing a direct comparison between the original CD and the slight HD upgrade. I expected little if any difference. The difference was not night and day or anything like that, but to me it was very noticeable. Smoother, more open, much more solid bass impact, much better separation.

Has anyone else done any of this type of direct comparisons?

Randy, using the same recording, yes, the higher the bit rate, the better. Smoother is a good description.

In my xperience, the better the recording, the more noticeable even modest improvements in digital data flow are. With good recordings I've almost always found a noticeable improvement going from 16/44.1 to 24/48.
