Paul, if you like the Shindo you can go with that until funds for the Tenor are sufficient. There's plenty of guys around here that would buy the Shindo from you if you decide to sell it.

Re: About to pull the trigger on Tannoy
That's a tough one but I think it might be an easier decision once you're heard the Shindo gear.
I know you've heard some Shindo in the past and thought it was too laid back for you. It might be different in your room. If you like the Tenor better and can afford it right now I say go that route with your Mc pre. Usually for me when I hear a piece of gear that really moves me, all I can think about is owning it. No need to substitute anything else because it just won't do.

Re: About to pull the trigger on Tannoy
Paul, so glad you are finally able to hear the Shindo gear with your Westie's. I'm sure it will be very good.
Regardless of what brand you decide on I would try to stay with the same pre and power amp brand.
When you decide on which sonic signature is your taste the pieces are complimentary to one another. They are made to work together to create the perfect storm.
At the level you are considering playing around with combining different brands can be counter productive to the end experience as each of these master technicians have their own way of presenting sound.
Very different from playing around with Mc or other mass produced units. The league you are entering now needs total synergy to realize the best possible return on investment.Shindo D'Yquem's

J.J I agree with you and I understand. It will be tough and I might just keeping my McIntosh if dollars getting too much. I was so happy with Mc & Tannoy until I heard the Tenor. Mark is kind enough to let me hear the Tenor again in my room and I will have the Shindo right after.
I will have a good idea by end of the month. Anyway as we discussed come by next Friday or Saturday if you still want to hear the Shindo & Tannoy together.Paul

Re: About to pull the trigger on Tannoy
Sorry for the delay on my reply, I am not as lucky as Paul with having Westminster Royals, mine are only the TW version from early 90s. They look very similar but are not the elite Royal version! Your second question was how do they sound with Audio Note, the answer is the main reason I am on this forum, I will explain. We have recently shifted and my system is now in a very large room compared to before, the system has lost its magic. Before, the sound was just excellent I would not have needed to spend another dollar to improve it, at the time I had an integrated Audio Note Meishu only 8w per channel it produced a very musical sounding system and vocals to die for! Shifting house to a much larger room which is also our lounge room, happy wife happy life! Scenario. I found that the system now lacks body and the midrange is not as real, it just doesn't have the same sound, at first I thought the Meishu was the problem so I doubled the power and bought a pair of Conquest's which are 18w per channel this still has not given me back the sound I had before, the room is your largest component! I am not sure if more power is going to fix the problem or it's just the room that I have to except and make the most of. As far as Audio Note Amplifiers go, I love what they did for the Tannoy speakers in an average sized room, but in large rooms may not be the answer.
I think a well designed low powered amp like Audio Note Meishu gives you the best sounding midrange but can't give you excellent room filling bass in a large room, and you can't expect it to, it's still a trade off. When I have tried higher power amplifiers you loose that magic midrange.
I am wondering whether to combine dual JL Audio F112 subs to give me some fullness in the bass and still keep that valve midrange happening, my fear there though is trying to combine a transistor bass with valve mid top end, I don't think it will work.
Mike, I haven't got my Linn Sondek back yet, it's getting the new Kandid cartrige fitted, when the system is complete again I will send some photos and yes I have read all 103 posts!

Davo. Thanks for reply. I hear you about the room. Yes the room is very important.
I agree with J.J. I don't think the sub is the answer. Any panel/diffusors in your room ? Big thick carpet ?
Luckily as Mike and Mark agree my room works really well with West Royal and Canterbury. It's not big (14X28 ) but gives everything I wanted in sound Hope you can figure it out very soon. Where do you live Davo ?Paul

Re: About to pull the trigger on Tannoy
Its o good to be able to communicate with guys that have the same interests. My room has parquetry floors, but yes I do have a very thick wool carpet which goes up to the speakers and back to my seated position.
Thank you for your advise on the subwoofers, I am sure you are right!
I got caught up with the JL Audio subs, they look so well made, but I do know all the problems associated with trying to match Transistor amps with valve. I tried all that in my younger days with using
a Krell amp for bass and an Audio Research for my top end, I had Infinity Kappa speakers at the time what a mistake! I did mention on my list of items I have a subwoofer its a Rel Stentor Sub which I use at the lowest setting below 25hz at a very low volume which fills in that bottom end. I know that the Tannoy's are more than capable of producing bass, but not with 18w in a large room! it seams like I have to start looking for a larger amplifier, but I do not want to loose midrange and top end sound quality, I hate trade offs.
The amplifier that I think will fix all my problems is an Audio Note Jinro which uses 211 valves, but the price is out of my league here in Australia. There is one other amplifier I am curious about, its the Line Magnetic 219iA! but I can no longer
afford purchasing trial and error products in my system, and going to a Chinese brand amplifier worries me! I have been told that they do note use the best transformers and components like Audio Note does, that's why there so much cheaper! not sure if that's true though, I am not looking for a best buys price wise product, I want the right product that will complement my system. My other problem is there is no close dealer for these products here that I can go and listen to them here in Melbourne Australia, so I can only go by reviews and you know how flawed they can be!
The only consolation I have if you can call it that, is knowing that my system once sounded fantastic! to a level that I never wanted to turn it off even after an 8 hour session, I know there is probably only one component that will give that sound back to me, but I have to make sure its the right one.
Any advise would be appreciated, cant wait to here what Paul's system sounds like.

Re: About to pull the trigger on Tannoy
Thanks Paul, cant wait to hear what you think of the Shindo amps. An Audio Note technician I know, who used to work for an Audio Note dealer in Melbourne which no longer exists, thinks just as highly of Shindo as he does Audio Note.
He is Chinese and has learnt his trade with Audio Note, he said transformers and components are so important to get right in single ended class A amplifiers.

so paul after all that...... tenor?? im sure its an awesome amp but i gotta say im a little dissapointed that with those speakers your not running 300b's. you should at least pick up a used pair of 8w 300b's just for fun.
good luck with the shindo gear today, im betting its even warmer on classical than the allnics were. but i bet they are just an awesome combo overall with the westies.Steve

Allnic 5000 or 6000 (non-DHT version) might just be the ticket. I tend to agree with Steve. I'm not sure I could pass over a SET design option with such wonderfully efficient speaker. If you want slam, a 845/211 SET design will give you the magic mids of a 300b and greater increase in dynamics.
