Upgrade VMPS Large?
I have a pair of older VPMS Large subs and love them - especially the 17hz low end. The rest of my speakers are all professional JBL's - a 12" mid base, 8" midrange and concert horn tweeters. Each speaker has it's own power amp. Im thinking about replacing the 2 active VMPS drivers (not the passive driver) with JBL professional 12 and 15 inch drivers. My other option is to go with dual JBL 18" drivers per side but the response only goes down to 25hz. Thoughts or advice? Thanks, TJ

Re: Upgrade VMPS Large?
I doubt that the JBL drivers are optimized for a VPMS enclosure.
Have you visited the VPMS forum?

Re: Upgrade VMPS Large?
I finally got my beloved VMPS Large subwoofers out of storage and hooked up and found that the passive 15 inch bottom firing passive had rotted out. Needlessly to say the frequency response does not even get close to the 17hz earth shaking it used to. Maybe down to 30. These speakers are probably 30 years old and deterioration is expected. The active drivers work fine. A quick search on google determined that the term "passive subwoofer" means something totally different than what I need to replace. Passive sub speakers have no coil but that's not what I'm seeing. Is there a 15" speaker with no voice coil out there or do I need to totally revamp the subwoofers?
Oh and BTW there is no VMPS brand specific thread.
Thanks for your help and what a great forum!Rack 1

Re: Upgrade VMPS Large?
If you will go to Audio Circle and contact John Casler you will likely get the information you need. John was Brian's largest dealer as well as very close friend and helped Mrs. Cheney with closing down the company and liquidating inventory after Brian passed. Send him a PM and get a phone number to call him. There are a large number of people on AC that have a lot of experience with VMPS speakers. Danny Ritchie at GR Research may also be able to help you source the parts you need.

I upgraded the power supply on my Gigafoil v4 to a Weiss PSU 102. It’s very nice step up. But with the new model, you’re looking at $2000 before even investing in a SOTA linear power supply.
