    Magico Q15s

    Hi,

My pair of Q15s have about 700 hours on them - they've been on 24/7 even when I've been gone but at a lower volume. To not totally upset the wife and dogs wile I'm away.

I can say WOW!!!!!!!!! I truly expected - good and no complaints - but no where close to worth the money (i got a bonus and figured what the hell) , but marginally better than what i had before. I was way wrong.

I totally believe in 2 subs for a 2 chanel system. Even tho subs basically operate in a non directional freq. It is apparent through listening that it makes a difference. Not in bass but in the spacial presentation of the system. I don't understand it - just believe after numerous systems over the last 15 years. Some with $700 subs, so i can't say i'm hearing through my pocketbook.

The Q15s are in my Ayre KXR20/Dag 400 monos/Raidho D5 system. I have them running as an addition to - no crossover to the main speakers. I have them coming in at a 24db per coctive slope at 34hz on the right chanel and 39hz on the left. I guess weirdness in my room. Or maybe my ear definciencies. Who knows - cause when I do measurements -- it says it should be 38 on the right and 46 on the left and both 2-3 db higher. But I don't care - i listen for my self - and i tap my toe better with my ear decisions. I love measurements - probably my math background.

What I can say is ---- the micro detail in the bass is astronomical. at ANY volume the bass is something I've never heard before. Its just as much of a "wow" moment as when I heard 300b's on a women vocal 20-25 years ago in a horn tap system. (my second system) Wholly shit - thats real, yes bass that is REAL.. This is truly the first time I ever heard that with bass. It's a whole new world.

I truly wonder as good as these are - maybe combined with just a 2 way that integrated low enough would be the SOTA best system. Yes they are that good. I love smaller 2 ways - I'll try sometime, I'm sure.

Whether you like the Magico sound or not - do NOT ignore these. I've had Magicos - but decided on Radio, but thats just a preference - not better. The Magico bass and especially in the Q15s is the best I've ever heard. And I don't think there is anything close being manufactured today - and i've tried to find something better, but failed by a bunch (feb 2017).

I'm still searching - I'll report back if I find something better.
    Jock

Nice write up & great feedback Jock! I rationalized that my current Magico S5 Mk2's are good enough to be my long-term reference speakers as I know there are so many other areas of my system I can improve first before I need better speakers (i.e: amp, front end, racks, room & yes adding a pair of Magico subs). I owned my previous Infinity Reference 60's for 18 years...I think these will be keepers too.

Congrats Jock! When we heard them together at Magico HQ, the difference was significant.

    Congrats Jock!!!

As you have said, subs add so much more to the sound than just bass. After I added my REL subs and experienced the difference they made to the total musical presentation, I will never own a system without dual subs!!

    Congrats, a great choice indeed.

I also like the idea of super subs with super 2-ways for a SOTA system. Keen to hear more about your experiments.

    Re: Magico Q15s

Congrats Jock, this is wonderful news. I'm really happy to hear that you were able to achieve the sonic results you desired by overlaying the Q15 Sub's bass with the D-5's rather than rolling off the D-5's bass as Jon Valin did.

    Best,
    Ken
