    Re: Troubles at YG?

I remember when they came to visit me in September to “woo” me as a dealer (that would never happen by the way). Let’s just say it wasn’t much of a presentation.

And Mark Levinson. When Madrigal took over it was a watered down version, by the time Harmon got the brand they completely lost the plot.

So you're saying that the other brick and mortar stores that carry M/L don't qualify ? As for 'uniqueness' their electrostatic backbone has that covered in spades.

Regardless, the brand has matured quite nicely over the years.

Not good news, indeed. Yoav is brilliant.

Too bad as his speakers sound much better than Magico and other sealed box designs. They never had the Harley/Valin marketing muscle though. Pre-Covid I know they were doing good. Who knows now.

Looks like Yoav sold the company in 2017! Probably was asked to stay on during the transition period.

We’ll agree to disagree on that statement. Troubles at YG?

I agree with you on the marketing muscle. I’m trying to think of an example where a reviewer had YG’s as their main speaker. This is important because they keep making a reference to it.

This is a possible scenario of what occurred. It is not necessarily trouble at the company because Yoav departed. But I do believe they will miss his vision and engineering expertise.

Irrelevant, since ML were sold at Best Buy’s long before the original owners cashed out.

    Re: Troubles at YG?

A double whammy for the company: the departure of founder/lead design engineer and in the middle of a pandemic.
More than likely, there is a non-compete agreement in place so there will be restrictions as to what the founder can do in the near future under his name.
Maybe the new owners want to take the brand mainstream as opposed to a niche/audiophile audience.

As a fellow YG owner I'd have to agree with you on their product over the competition. To my ears at least. But, I always thought YG had good press and always received positive reviews.

However, IMHO YG having an entry point of 25KUSD for their "entry level" model into the brand is a tough sell in today's climate or to expand your market.

Given how successful the Magico A Series has been for them.

I'll hand it to Magico over YG over on this. They've captured many new customers into their brand over their competitors with the A Series.

Perhaps YG didn't want to comprise and make a speaker to compete with A series.

But, the owner did and forced him out.

We will see what happens to brand.

Nevertheless, he is a brilliant engineer and YG behind the YG speakers so, it will be tough to find another to build on his technologies.

We'll see what happens. But, I'm not in rush to sell my pair for a Magicos :-)

100% agree - the A3 could be the most important release for Magico in its history.

I don’t see how you can LOVE YG and hate Magico. I mean, they are different (Magico is much better, but you need a bit of sophistication to get it ), but due to their similar bass alignment, they are more alike in comparison to something like Wilson. I always liked them, I wish them well (although a lot of their “engineering” claims is pure BS, but audiophiles like good stories, oh well).

Life goes on. Changes like this one tend to be rooted with leadership and direction differences. Although it is possible that Yoav wants to do something else. I hope YG does well and stays in business.

I’ve always liked the company and their uniquely designed and manufactured driver cones. Their Sonja 2.2’s are in my top 5 speakers under $100,000.

    Re: Troubles at YG?

Official post on YG’s Facebook page:

YG Acoustics, a world-leading ultra high-end speaker manufacturer located just outside of Denver, Colorado announces the departure of its founder, Yoav Geva.

Mr. Geva launched YG Acoustics in 2002 at age 24. Through the course of 15 years of innovation and hard work he cemented YG Acoustics as mainstay in the global ultra high-end speaker market.

In 2017 Mr. Geva sold YG Acoustics but remaind with the company in an engineering capacity. Under the leadership of CEO David Komatz, YG has expanded its worldwide reach and is now distributes to audiophiles and music lovers in nearly 50 countries.

YG continues to be an innovation firm and a precision manufacturer. In addition to its eight unique key technologies, YG has a roadmap of innovations which will appear in future product releases. Among things to look for are a line-up of more accessible speakers as well as advances in YG's statement model Sonja XV. We can only tease at this time, but stay tuned for a truly unique paradigm shifting offering on the horizon.

All of us at YG Acoustics offer thanks and well wishes to Yoav.

or Yoav smoked too much pot while at YG, was ousted from the Co. he founded and he's now working at Best Buy peddling widgets...the rumor mill and speculation will never cease.

    Re: Troubles at YG?

I purchased a set of YG Acoustics Carmel speakers (1st generation) in 2012. Over the years I've upgraded/replaced amps, DACs, music servers and cables, but have never felt the itch to replace the Carmels. They fit my room, my ear and my musical tastes very well. I've listened to many speakers over the years at audio shows, friends houses and dealers, and have stuck with my YG's. Different strokes...

A couple of things that impressed me about YG Acoustics (outside of the sound of the speakers)...

Dick Diamond (Director of Marketing/Sales...not sure if he is still in this role) has always been quick to reply to any questions I've had re: setup, new models, synergy with other components, etc... Always friendly, positive and professional, even though I haven't been "buying" from YG for eight years.

I was in business in Denver toward the end of 2012 and called Dick Diamond to see if I might drop by the factory and look around. He arranged a time, and I was met by Yoav Geva and given a very thorough and in-depth tour of the factory, following the manufacturing path from milling of the aluminum billets to final quality testing of sound and specifications to shipment. The capper was sitting in the large audition room (a cavernous room built in the middle of the factory) and listening to the Sonja's, which were to be introduced at a show in early January 2013. There had been no press to-date when we sat, listened and discussed music. A fantastic experience I won't forget.

I believe it is these linkages with the owners/designers of our audio components that enriches and personalizes the experience. I hold similar thoughts for Brian Zolner of Bricasti, and Sam Laufer of Laufer-Teknik, along with trusted brick-and-mortar dealers.

This could be an excellent opportunity to pick up a new pair of Sonja 2.2’s for a great price.

You'll see a new company with new designs in ~a year I bet. People move on in business, it happens. For my ears, I never liked the YG sound, heard them at RMAF some years back and they were drilling a hole in my ears. I then heard them again at a dealer, Haley this time and while better than some year back, they just didn't float my boat. I heard the dealer's Vivid Giya G1 and was sold - musical, dynamic, effortless, accurate. Also WRT Magicos, the A series are good for the $, the S series is also quite good, the M series is something special.

I would say the Mini was their most important release. It launched the brand and established their reputation for quality, great sound, and little compromise. The A3 is also important and should demonstrate to others what is possible. I wonder how the cheapest YG compares to the similarly priced Magico A5.

    Re: Troubles at YG?

I'm not that familiar with Levinson's vintage gear, I don't think it's fair to dismiss their current and some past offerings. The 526 is a very good preamp, the 58nn are outstanding integrated amps and the 534, 536's I feel can hold their own with any amps in that price.

My only criticism it takes them so long to get a product to market it's almost outdated when it hits. They may want to consider a software based update path.

I'd love to hear the current amps with Magico.

    Re: Troubles at YG?

It has been a few years since I have heard YG and none of their latest top of the line offerings. The last time I spent any time listening to a pair was during a demo at RMAF. I happened to be sitting directly behind Yoav and he was smiling and nodding his head while I was shaking my head thinking what a shit demo was playing. What surprised me was I had heard these speakers with PASS amps and they sounded outstanding. I know those speakers can sound great. What was he thinking that day?

    Re: Troubles at YG?

One of the best systems I’ve ever listened to was the MSB Select 2 DAC, MSB M204 Mono Amps and YG Acoustics Sonja 2.2 at Axpona 2018 in the MSB room. The music was stunningly lifelike. Here’s JVS of Stereophile’s video from that exact room. The MSB portion of the video starts at 15:00 and music starts at 18:55. I was sitting in the second row when this video was made.

The YG's in Alma Audio's main system checks all of the sonic boxes for me, Alex and Fabio are cool dudes to boot. it rivaled the Wilson WAMM Master Chronosonic demo I heard at Maier Shadi's studio in L.A.
