Not sure if you're joking or not but since I didn't see a smiley -
'Cracking' is a British term/slang: Cracking - If something is cracking, it means it is the best.

Thanks audio.bill. Not exactly the best choice of adjectives in describing loudspeaker performance. In fact I can’t think of any worse if trying to describe “excellence” rather than “defective.”

the eatons have been here nearly a month and continue to impress. one thing which is good is they have detail at low volume so when your wife wants it turned down so she can concentrate you can still enjoy the music . lovely imaging too and very modest size

Alberello, your setup and room is a work of art. It must feel very good to come home each day (or thereabouts)! Big fan/owner of big Tannoys myself, here.
What did these Tannoys replace, and do you have any initial sonic impressions?

    Thanks.
I build this room from scratch, unfortunately in this environment that is 45 square meters I didn't have tested other big loudspeakers, just the KEF LS50, but there is no comparison.
With this system you have a lot of low frequency energy, you must have a proper acoustic room treatment.
I strong recommend use Solid State amplification with damping factor at least 150 like mine, big improvement come with bi-amplification too, bringing the right bass control and brighter high frequency.
    Regards.

Re: Tannoy reintroduces it's Legacy speaker series

Dual-concentric Tannoys work well with a wide range of amplification. I've used various DC models with both tubes and SS, ranging from 20 Watts (restored Heathkits & Eicos) to 275+. I currently run Rogue Apollo Dark KT120 monoblocks at 275 Watts/ch (maybe a bit more), into Canterbury GR. I gave my girlfriend a set of Tannoy Eyris DC3 with NAD C 368 (class D) - what a gem of a little system. It all sounds wonderful; owners can choose amps based on what they wish to prioritize. With high power amps, you can extract the maximum dynamics and impact out of your Tannoys, especially for loud volume listening. With quality SS amplification (even/especially class D), you can hit a good balance of dynamics, good overall sound, and great value for the money. With sweet low-power tube amps, you can get an even more beautiful liquid midrange, and optimize lower volume listening - at the expense of potentially hitting clipping with louder volumes of rock and orchestral music.

Re: Tannoy reintroduces it's Legacy speaker series

I heard the Cheviots at Uncle Kevvy's today. They'll rock with substantial headroom on just 35 tube watts. A little bass happy but rasing them 8-12" or so may ameliorate that. Im leaning more towards the stand mount Eaton.

The problem is simply that it depends which Tannoys we're talking about. My friend's restored old Tannoy 12ins sound great with a Radford STA 25, and sublime with my Nord Class D amp. But neither of these amps drives my 15ins 5 year old Canterbury SEs well.

    Hi Phil,
A Radford STA25 I've just serviced and upgraded sounds great with my Tannoys as does a Radford TT100 I've more or less compeltely restored so there's two that work well. I wrote off the Radford STA 25 before its service and upgrades but now it's really sounding great, so just shows what a difference running correctly and sympathetic upgrades can make!

An EAR 890 I've got in does a very decent job of driving them too, despite being Class A but it does have 4 KT90s per channel output valves!

  30. #80

Re: Tannoy reintroduces it's Legacy speaker series

And a Radford STA15 does a great job too! It all underlines the story that the Tannoy Canterbury SEs need a degree of feedback, probably Class AB, and low output impedance /reasonable damping factor

Just as a point of interest, in the Oxford English Dictionary 'tannoy' is defined as follows:

    NOUN

    • A type of public address system.

      Example sentences
      • ‘Even festive songs are being played over the tannoy.’
      • ‘‘This is your captain speaking,’ said a disembodied voice over the tannoy.’
      • ‘The train driver explained the situation over the tannoy, adding that it might be some consolation to us to know that the safety equipment works.’
      • ‘But when we got off the plane at Heathrow on our way home we heard our names being called over the tannoy.’
      • ‘A message comes over the tannoy, ‘There are no southbound services on the tube line at the moment’.’

The Brits also refer to all vacuum cleaners as 'Hoovers' whether they're made by Hoover or not. The origin of the name Tannoy is in fact an anagram formed from two words (tantalum & alloy). And yes, in the early days they were known for PA systems.

very true , if you say to the man in the street they will all think a tannoy is a pa system . my old church in London a few yards from the old tannoy base had speakers from tannoy instead of church bells ,
