Re: The speaker fairy showed up today - JBL 4367 !!!

    I've tried the following:

Nord One Up w/ Sparkos op amp
    Accuphase A-36
    Ayre KX-5/20
    McIntosh MC-75 new reissue monos

Next up will be CJ ART monos, Jolida 3502 w/ KT-150's and Bryston 28BSST2's.

I have to say each has their own strength but the tubes sound best to me. Depth increases exponentially with more air and separation. These are the smoothest, most fun speaker that I've heard. The MC-75 monos have probably been my favorite so far, but I suspect that the ART monos will kill all easily. The Accuphase A-36 lately has actually been the best solid state overall by a hair, although a little more power could seal the deal.

As much as I want to get away from tubes, I love their sound best.

If you want to get away from tubes, the secret is in complete system synergy. The digital end is the most important.

Nice.... you and your tubes .... I would not be opposed to a MC275 one of these days.... But I am all in with digital now so............... I have got to try a Statement when W4S has one available. One of these days I got to get KEF References again. When I get a pair of those I can guarantee that you will have to pry them out of my cold dead hands... hopefully many years down the road ....

Why not try an ARC REF 6 pre with the Ayre amp? Should be a very nice match.

My only reason for scaling back on tubes is because my system is playing 10-15 hours a day and almost all weekend.

If you could get the sound you desire from a cool running, efficient and reliable small form factor system, then I can't see any drawbacks.

Thank you Jack. I've been looking at Backert Labs for a while. I honestly have to say that a absolutely love my KX-5/20 Ayre (and I love my McIntosh C52 as well) and they mate perfectly well with every amp that I've tried so far.

Honestly I love the Wyred pre-amplifier... Hybrid passive/active and a volume control system that compares with most everything out there! Read a review where they put it up against a $12k pre-amplifier and said they would probably pick the STP-SE....

6Moons basically said it had the sound of Tubes without the noise .... (at a fraction of the price)

I know you really like the Mac and the Ayre, but just thought if you wanted to look at a tube pre that you could run for hours with small signal tubes that are still available it might be worth a look. Plus since they are only 100 miles from and with the full refund policy could be worth a listen. Not supposed to be much of a difference between the Rhumba and its over twice as expensive "big brother." Terry said in his review that they could also adjust the gain to what you prefer. from their standard offering.

I am still thinking it over. I don't want to just get one from them without any intention of buying. I don't feel comfortable doing that. If I get closer to a decision, I will absolutely check them out. I know they modded and fixed CJ gear back in the day and suspect that their design is probably amazing.

These JBL 4367's are simply outstanding.

Smooth and sweet, easy all day listening great. Powerful bass, pinpoint imaging as if the band is right there in my room with very little room interaction, it seems. They have a WIDE sound stage and the speakers totally disappear. I absolutely love them, as much as my Strads

    Man, a rough crowd.

I haven't compared my Nord class D's against the multi-mega-thousand dollar class A or AB offerings, but I don't think I'll need to. These examples of class D are pretty nice, but then again I went into this with an open mind.

    Boy is it ever Mike

Hey, I love the Nords with the Sparkos op amps. They aren't going anywhere. I do plan on adding the 994 op amps with the new boards.

Tubes are my first love, but different amps react differently to each speaker. I think I like the Nords better on the Strads, they need the power. The JBL's do fine with less.

    Hi joe,
    I missed this thread!
Congrats , of course.... ! I didn't think you guys were so much into JBL as this brand is rarely put forward here...

    I have been proposed the 4429 new for 4000 instead of 6k in a shop in Paris a week ago.... Seriously thinking about it;

To come back to the 4367 sure they are desirable, for they are one of the last realisation of Greg Timbers before being fired by the japonese....but for a little more you could have had the M2 crown experience, which according to the guys on LH is paramount.... the daughters of the 4430 ! sexier, and much more powerfull.... The crown intergarte DSP on it as the M2 have but a very small passive crossover. The filtering and room equalizinf, and tuning to your taste is made by the amp.

Re: The speaker fairy showed up today - JBL 4367 !!!

    Hi,

Yes, I very much obsessed over the M2 with either the Crown or Levinson package. I was very hesitant to buy mainly because I would get locked into using either of these two amps. The easier package, and less expensive of course, was with the Crown amps. I am not a big fan of the Crown house sound although now, from owning the 4367, I suspect the M2 could have been a good package but still not my ultimate flavor.

I love the ability to use my own amps and tailor the sound to my taste. I would not have been able to get great dealer service for the M2 package and that concerned me. With the 4367, I know the rest is up to me. No secret codes or setup screens in the Crown software that I would not be privileged to using, etc. I already have an arsenal of amps to play with on the 4367 and love the variety.

The 4367 have proven to be an exceptional pair of speakers. I am content with my purchase and will wait for the upgraded M2 package to be announced before jumping into that system.

I think my 4367 have a slightly upgraded/modified horn mid/tweeter driver over the M2 that works amazingly well.

I tried to find M2 dealers locally to work with on the M2, but it was extremely difficult. I do not think I would have received the proper help.

Re: The speaker fairy showed up today - JBL 4367 !!!

    well, fair enough...
Did you know the DSP codes has been cracked and are availbale for mini DSP....? for instance...
That is the way I chose for now : I bought a mini DSP 2*4HD and started to play with it.... measuring with rew and importing the corrections into miniDSP.
I thought it was time to learn more, and not the art/science of passive crossover.... when you hear that to make a good passive crossover one needs knowledge, luck and talent, that is two empirical factors over three.... too much for me ! so active crossover in conjunction with room equilization would be the way..... but one has to learn.... and cheaper ! I would love to hear your Bryston on the 4367... Mike is , of course, right, tubes are very nice on JBL (and differently from what you wrote once, a clean and precise preamp (bryston BP17 goes well with tubes (the MC275)) as the preamp brings "righteouness" and the amp, pleasure.

As for the Crown I am puzzling ! I just bought the cheapest Crown on earth the xli 800 to make my test with cheap gear and to bi amp temporarily before bying a good 300 W SS amp. Of course the 4B3 was on the list but the crown at 270 € works surprisingly well and I am saying to myself : how a crown DCI 2/300 would compare to the 4B ? the first one sales here 1300 € and the second 5300 €!

Re: The speaker fairy showed up today - JBL 4367 !!!

Just now seeing this. Congratulations Joe!

I've actually had a pair of these for about 2 months. Heard them when I was demo-ing some other speakers to replace my 802D2's and -- as I had the opportunity to sell my B&W's -- I went ahead and just bought them to have something here so as not to be speakerless (that kinda sounds depressing). The price was nice...

What impressed me was just how "there" and involving they were at the dealer. Same thing at home.

As I told Joe earlier, the McIntosh gear has never been the ultimate in transparency or detail, but I'm getting a lot of this with these. No horn coloration that I can really detect. And the 15" woofer is surprisingly fast.

Don't have near as much gear in the stable as Joe (who does...), but I've also put my Hegel H30 on them with good results. And just for kicks--I hooked up a pair of Crown XLS 1500's I had (intending to use them on some outdoor zones at some point in place of my
Control4 multichannel amp). Not bad at all--very clean and tight. Honestly, a $400 amp shouldn't sound as good as these do.

Anyway, glad to have another 4367 owner in the mix.

    Hi Rance,

I am so happy that you love your 4367's. They are superb and sound great with almost every amp.

I am sure the H30 is wonderful. For horn speakers, these are some of the least "horny" speakers that I've ever experienced. You are right, a totally "you are there" experience with zero shout, smoooooooooth and slightly sweet, yet all is there. Just a blast to own and play.

Once I heard you had a pair, that made 3 or 4 out there that I knew of in the wild. I had obsessed about these since knowing they were coming out.

    I am a happy camper.

JBL's web page lists it as a 2 way and a 3 way, make up your mind.

Also, Compression is misspelled due to the space in the middle of the word...

Thanks Joe for the info on the 4367s! I have had the JBL M2s on the brain for some time. I heard a vintage set of Klipsch speakers and was reminded of the unfettered speed and dynamics of higher efficiency horn designs. I am actively contemplating a custom build using their drivers, custom series x-overs and a 7 layer birch box built by and mechanically by the Starsound folks.

My pleasure. I absolutely love my 4367. Smooth, sweet, musical, powerful bass, listen all day good, easy to drive and easy to place. Maybe not classic "audiophile" speakers like Magico, et al, but just so satisfying to me.

I'd love to see what you end up building. I am sure you will do an amazing job.
