    New speakers have arrived

    10033047-F95E-4326-A4F4-CED385AF4123.jpeg

I ordered these in February, Covid did not help the timeline. Daedalus Muse Studio speakers. These are efficient, and work great in my small room. Very magical sounding, crafted by a true craftsman. They are beautiful. Still breaking them in, but very much in love.

Yes, I built those, and a few other amps, both from DIYAudio, and a couple of AudioNoteKits kits. The M2x are very special, offering modular front end daughter cards. I tend to prefer the Mountain View class A cards the most. This was the first set of amps that gave me a sound field that includes front to back visualization as well as side to side.

I have plans to improve the power supply, switching circuit, and black front plates.

I have a small room 9.5x14 feet. And my speakers don’t get much room behind them. I did room treatments in consultation with GIK acoustics.

That's so awesome. I'd love to be able to try a few kits. I should start practicing my soldering techniques.

Congrats. Nice. I notice you have them quite close to the front wall. Are you still able to get a perception of sound stage depth from them? I've found the guys at GIK Acoustics quite helpful too. Do you have any treatment at the 1st sidewall reflection points?

    Re: New speakers have arrived

My room is less than optional. There is an open hallway near the left speaker, and a window near the right speaker, 3 in a row in fact. I do have a GIK thin panel on the sloping ceiling, and a 4 inch thick 2x8 foot panel on the back wall. According to REW, I still have some 40hz peak, but treating that correctly would use a many of their tuned bass traps. I don’t have enough wall space. Room is 9.5x14 foot.

These speakers are front ported, which helps with putting them closer to the wall. My speakers are currently about 12 inches from the back wall, and 18 inches from side walls. It’s hard to tell on the pictures, but the front baffle is angled toward the listening position, also helping with a small room. My “triangle” is about 7.5 foot in size, so nearfield.

I do use 1-2 dB of balance from my pre to center the sound image, correcting for the open wall on the left. I do have stereo imaging, and have found front to back, as well, with the M2x monoblocks. Ideal, no. Dealing with the hand I’m dealt, in the step down home.

    Re: New speakers have arrived

Yes, I understand the challenges of dealing with a small less than optimal room and congratulate you for the effort.

Many rooms of various dimensions have a 40Hz peak and it is a serious pain to deal with. 40Hz is a long wave and you are quite right to note that substantial passive bass trapping would be needed. I found the GIK Scopus tuned T40 did a respectable job (measured) in one small listening room I had. I wrote about the experience in my system thread.

Do you throw a cover over the LCD/LED screen when listening to music? I've found having a reflective surface between two loudspeakers to degrade imaging. Perhaps something to try if you haven't already.

First, I highly doubt their bass traps will treat 40hz, even if you had 20 of them. The only ones that WILL treat that low of a frequency are from Resolution Acoustics who took them to New York to be properly measured. You have some other options. You can place several small subs around the room to balance out the nodes. Also, Spatial Audio used to make a little device which was essentially a subwoofer with a microphone. When it heard a boomy bass node, it sent out a cancellation wave. DSP is another option, but even with the best (DEQX), DSP giveth, DSP taketh away. I know all about boomy bass nodes when I fought with my Wilson Alexia’s for over a year in my room. They had a peak at the same frequency as the worst node in my room. Was a recipe for disaster!

One last thing: move your seating position around a little to see if things improve. Maybe even try the long wall.

Another option is the Synergistic Research Black Box. Very easy to use as a single or in multiples and can work very well for these issues. I believe they offer a 30 day satisfaction guarantee, so the risk would be minimal.

    Re: New speakers have arrived

Daedalus speakers have been on my short list for a while they are very nice. Here are a few things I would try. Get a few pieces of maple 2" thick and get them off the floor a bit or you can use any kind of platform. Move them out of the corners some and toe them in a little. The side wall is real close to the woofer and port and acts like an extension of both. Sometimes tilting the speakers back by utilizing the spikes/footers helps plus it can aim the tweeter more to your ears ( depending on the height of your chair ). If there are rubber feet on your equipment you may want to replace some of them with brass footers. You can get there , just make small changes at a time. Good luck.

    Re: New speakers have arrived

The T40 bass traps measure 2x2 feet square, and 10.5 inches deep. Putting 8 or so of those would be difficult in my small room.

I will look at the active options over time, and certainly fiddle with positioning. I’m trying to wait on all that till at least 200-300 hours break in, so I’m not having to do it a few times.

Next project will be power supply upgrades for amps.

Have you looked at the PSI AVAA active bass trap?

I use them and they are very effective. No boom, no overhang. It allows your speakers to sound as they are.

Bob Katz (that mastering engineer) loves them.
