Re: If you had to choose only ONE pair of speakers for rest of your life ...

    Wrong question, friends!

Is it about the speakers we would choose while using our current amps or the "ideal" amps? Are they to be used in our current room or in a future dwelling?
Right now, the Raidho D3 would be my answer, but next year I go into retirement and move to my country house, with a 45sq.m of space and a two-floor height (around 6.5m) in the main living room. So would the Raidhos fit & fill the room with sound? And what about the amp - will I get enough power from a Constellation Centaur stereo, or should I keep my current 500+Wpc Chord? All this, considering I'll have no neighbours to speak of: the nearest house is some 200m away, so I can blast Yello until the plaster comes off the walls!

For my room and my budget ... I have them. Reworked Apogee Duetta Signatures.

For a cost no object, room no object, best environment available I would have to back the aforementioned MBL's. They just do things that nothing else can do.

The XLF also then makes a great choice. Although huge, it can play in much smaller rooms than one would think...minimum listening distance of 8 feet which is pretty good.)

Happy to say I now have mine that I will take to my grave, the Zellaton Emotions. But if I ever move in a larger house, I would most definitely buy the Zellaton Studio Reference One, said to be the best system at Munich by a clear margin last year.

Ozarktom, you definitely have good ears! Their's nothing like Zellaton - it's not even close. If you really listen to music it's your speaker but if you want explosions and earthquakes look elsewhere. The detail, beauty and accurate bass is out of this world. I'm using Grand's but have my eyes on the Concert's. Still recovering from a CH Precision acquisition but once the dust settles I will most likely jump on the Concerts. All in house drivers and tweeters - no crossover on the full range - semi open baffle. What's amazing is that they've been around for about 85 years, one of Germany's oldest speaker companies. No hype, no marketing - just the purest sound on Earth. This is the only speaker I've ever owned where my passion for them has actually increased over time….

Tough Question - I am really new to this forum but senior on many others. I am really liking AudioShark. I must join the two set crowd with one caveat...

#1 are my exquisite new TSW(True Sound Works) Ultimate Apogee Divas unless Rich and I work out a deal for a pair of full range one day. I also want to retire in a few years!

Well, uh my Paradigm Studios. I have not heard anything best them at least to my ears, but then again I have only heard about 40 pairs of speakers to date (and a number of them were not anything close to reference quality), so there is no doubt others are out there someplace that may best them to my ears, just have not heard them yet. I do have a fondness for a couple among the 40 pairs I've heard as well. (I liked the Martin Logan electrostats I heard and the big B&W diamonds). If I had a choice of just one pair new and one pair vintage, I'd have to go with the Apogees I heard once for the vintage. I forgot what model, but wow! Runner-up DCM TF600s or TF1000s.
Just my ears though can't speak for how any of these would sound to anyone else.

For me, it would've to be a pair of Magico S1 driven with a Acoustic Plan Sitar, source be damned, and this is coming from a guy whom is a renowned Mini-Monitor lover, but I've to admit that if ever I were to grow up..........., it would be these used in tandem.

I also had Polk Monitor series speakers back in the day. They and the Boston Acoustics "A series" and the ADS L/II series were excellent sound for a fair price. My son still has my ADS L-810/II speakers from 1978 along with my Snell Type A/II's.

Re: If you had to choose only ONE pair of speakers for rest of your life ...

What speaker would I choose if I had to choose one for the rest of my life? For me this is an easy question to answer as I already own them. They are the new Spatial Audio Holograms M2s. I have not heard a speaker that sounds more natural and true to real life than these speakers do, nor can imagine a speaker that could do more than these because these sound so real. How do you beat real?
Every performance parameter we look for in a speaker is satisfied by these speakers... in spades. And they are very easy to move and very very room friendly. In my room they sound great no matter where I place them.
While I know that one can never be absolutely sure of anything, I am much more than reasonably sure that I will stick with these from now on.
It is said that once you have experienced good open baffle speakers you never go back. Now THAT I am sure of (with respect to myself).
Even if cost were no obstacle for me, I would still choose these.

Re: If you had to choose only ONE pair of speakers for rest of your life ...

Hello and thanks for the welcome. i just joined yesterday and today I will go in and introduce myself. What prompted me to join is that i saw a thread where people were discussing the Hologram M1s, but no one had actually experienced them. I have had them for over a month now. I live in a place where I can let my system play all night at loud listening levels and not disturb anybody. So, I was able to break them in very quickly and I have had ample time to listen to them... and be amazed.
I had occasion to email Mike and he told me that he has the Lumina Statements coming. He urged me to write about the M2s. Later I intend to post a write up of my impressions on the Hologram thread.

    Hello Mike,
I apologize for talking about you in the third person like that. I read the two posts welcoming me and responded before I checked to see who wrote them.

That's ok. No big deal. We are glad you are here. I know Steve (Petro85) is keenly interested in the Hologram speakers.

They still do. Their current lineup is no joke. Heard a pair of their bookshelfs at an audio show two years ago. They were among the best I heard that day.

For life? I would not like to choose speakers I haven't heard, that would be somebody else's choice. So if it's speakers I've heard then it would be Harold Beveridge System 2's in a heartbeat. With space constraints I would have the Braun LV1020 Tri-amps. From my current 1/2 dozen pairs I will most happily keep the DQ-10's until my end. That said, I see all my choices are vintage. It's not that I'm opposed to new, I just need to get to some shows and hear some new stuff.

If I could choose just one it would be Sound lab ultimates, a fitting name for a great speakers. I owned JGH's reference, the sound lab A-3 for a number of years and i'm still on the lookout for another pair. For a small listening space, orig Quads ESL's ('57s) are peerless.

I know people speak of the ESL 57s in near reverential terms, but in reality it is a very limited speaker. No real bass, not much on the top end, and it's basically a midrange speaker that can't take much power at all before it arcs and blows holes in the panels. If you love chamber music played at low volumes, I guess they are OK. I like the original Quad II amps that were designed to go with the ESL 57s much better. Fitted with NOS Mullard KT-66 tubes and NOS Mullard rectifier and those little amps rock much harder than the ESL 57s ever could have hoped to.

Other than the above deficiencies, I think the ESL-57s are great!
