:hey:

yep. it's me again with more dumb questions.

goal: a very good "soundstage" if that means an apparent 3 dimensional sound.

room> 13 by 13 feet, 10 foot ceiling
bowers and wilkins CM6 S2 speakers.
triode tube amp
ONE REL subwoofer T5 I

I am planning to buy one more subwoofer. the same one.

question:

where to begin placing the 2 speakers and one subwoofer and my chair?

currently:

speakers left and right about 3 feet from front wall, sub is in front left corner. chair is in middle of room left to right, and maybe 3 feet from back wall
I welcome any and all ideas!
thanks so much!

Just put the speakers where they sound good to you. In a room that size the options are few one you could try and I have seen work in a square think of the room as a diamond shape and have one corner centred between the speakers. Some times that works well centre the sub near the corner.

It is a way to deal with reflection points in a square room makes the room a bit longer it can be a good thing you never know till you try.

THANK YOU BZR and Garth! I am ordering a second subwoofer, which should help a lot, according to my reading!

thanks

Pull the speakers out to about 6' from the front wall, push your chair back another foot or so and give a listen. After many years of trying to set up according to everyone's "formula" I finally followed after a fellow audiophile's system setup. Huge depth field and for the first time the speakers actually "played the room". Bass, mid-bass and soundstage all came into focus. May or may not work for you but in this crazy hobby anything is worth a try. Especially at the cost (or lack thereof) of this experiment.

THANK YOU Michael green and jadedavid. I can easily try pulling the speakers back!

I may say that I DID get the second REL subwoofer, BIG difference, easily heard. I have each sub slightly behind and outside of the main speakers. wow. I did not know what I had been missing. not boom box bass, but RICH cellos, pianos, low notes, on ALL types of music. wow.

to Michael green: do you mean the actual composition of the room? the front wall, where the speakers are, is a huge window with a shade that can go up and down. the right wall is plaster, with a normal sized window. the back wall is a wall and a closet with doors. the left wall is a wall with a door opening toward the front. carpet floor, 10 foot ceiling.

thanks guys!! have a great day! bob:hey:

Hi Bob

Yes, I was talking about the general construction of the room. I do fine tuning of audio systems for a living and seeing that I'm hanging out here some now, am happy to check out some of the guys questions and give some opinions that might come in useful for folks. Usually once I know the construction of a room and a couple of other specifics I can get a bit of an idea of the sound.

Subs are a fun tool for sure, and using a sub will affect the sound of the mids and highs as well as your soundstage.

Yes, it is interesting that subs also affect the mids and highs. Conversely when I've added supertweeters i've noticed that they have affected the bass.
It's the lack of predictability in this hobby that makes it so interesting and fun.
I keep trying different things with unexpected results. Can you say "mad scientist".
