Re: 2019 Editors' Choice Awards: Loudspeakers $100,000 and up
I think that if they turned out the lights so the reviewers didn't know what speakers they were listening to (or what the speakers looked like) the list would be very different, indeed!

Since it was published over a year ago I would say it is a bit outdated.

Re: 2019 Editors' Choice Awards: Loudspeakers $100,000 and up
I've heard the Rockports and the Wilson Alex XLF. Can't say I'd spend that kind of money on them. I've never been a Wilson fan though. Rockports sounded quite good.. but not 100k more then my Kefs.
PLENTY of great speakers out there under 50k. I'd rather take that extra and put it towards a better DAC or Vinyl front end.

Re: 2019 Editors' Choice Awards: Loudspeakers $100,000 and up
All but two are box speakers? Why is the “ultimate” Magico a horn’d affair but everything else from that company is a box speaker? I haven’t heard AvantGard’s top offerings, or the likes of Alsyvox panels, but what I have heard tells me there are speakers out there that don’t use the typical box design that should probably be included in the list. I have heard speakers in the $100k neighborhood that left me gobsmacked the WAMM’s were not one of them.

Re: 2019 Editors' Choice Awards: Loudspeakers $100,000 and up
I don’t worry about speakers over $100K although I do enjoy an occasional listen.
But my five favorite speakers under $100K in no particular order are:
MBL 101E Mk2
Magico M3
Vandersteen 7 Mk2
YG Acoustics Sonja 2.2
Alsyvox Botticelli

Yes, I don’t think the WAMM’s would be for me personally. Far beyond my budget and way too big for my room. But for those that can afford them (and actually like them), kudos to them.
I found John Atkinson’s interview last month quite interesting regarding speakers and speaker designers. He noted Laurence Dickie as his favorite modern day designer. The most expensive speaker Laurence can make is the G1 spirits with an external crossover at $93k. Crazy expensive, but obtainable.

Re: 2019 Editors' Choice Awards: Loudspeakers $100,000 and up
You have to wonder at the paradox of implicitly associating this price bracket to the very best quality possible.
Either quality can be measured and there is no reason to restrict a selection by price range or you cannot measure quality and then the implicit top quality argument falls apart.
More than a few people having heard the top offerings from Tekton feel they are credible contenders against the crowd highlighted here although they cost 10 to 60 times less.
Cheers,
Bernard
