JBL 4312A Monitors video - Speakers playing in the studio system

I recorded this video in June, 2013. These are the vintage JBL 4312A monitors I use with my McIntosh MA230 in the vintage system. I was curious how they might sound being driven by the C1000C/P and MC2301 amps so I moved them into the studio for about a week. I just swapped the Wireworld Silver Eclipse speaker wires from the Anniversario's to the JBL's. The 4312A speakers are sitting on angled floor stands I made from solid oak using the JBL drawings for the original factory stands. Hope you enjoy.

Dan. It sounds really great even on my phone ! I will try to hear them again on my desk top system later. They sounds beautiful. I guess it will bring back your sweet memory.

Are you going to try with your 230 Int amp soon ?

Paul.......I have been using my McIntosh MA230 with the JBL 4312A monitors for quite some time. JBL and McIntosh go together like peanut butter and jelly. It's a match made in heaven.

Re: JBL 4312A Monitors video - Speakers playing in the studio system

Paul.......I purchased the JBL 4312A speakers new in 1989 from a dealer in Miami, Florida. I kept them in my Holiday Rambler travel trailer for years powered by my McIntosh 4300V receiver. It was my away from home system. I spent a lot of time on projects all over the USA so I had to have some gear I could live with. After I retired I moved the 4300V receiver into the house and have been driving the JBL's with the McIntosh MA230 ever since I had it restored.

Beautiful amp and speakers, Dan. McIntosh and vintage speakers will never go out of style. Classics in every sense of the word. I am picking up a beautiful, totally restored pair of AR-90's just for the heck of it. I will post some pics upon their arrival. Any amp suggestions?

The AR-90 was quite the speaker in its time. I heard a pair of these at a dealer in Oregon back in the early 80's. I remember being impressed with the sound of the dome midrange and tweeter. Reminded me of the Braun speakers (sold as ADS here) during the same years. The AR-90 still seems to be well regarded. I would consider changing the upper midrange fuse on the back with a premium one.

The AR-90's specs show a sensitivity of 87dB so they are relatively efficient. I think I would be looking at an amplifier rated 75 to 100 watts per channel to get the best out of them. The specs say they can handle 250 watts.

Kev.......Yes, me too. My first pair of JBL's were the L100 speakers. Those stayed with me for years, then I finally gave them to my brother. I have quite the history with old Altec Lansing speakers and JBL. I am attached to the 4312A's that I have now. I don't see myself ever selling them. Best of all, they still look and sound great.

Yes, i was surprised at the quality of sound for a video that you posted, but, when I stopped & thought about it, well.... it wasn't that surprising really. it is a very good pedigree.

I know this thread is ANCIENT history but I also run 4312A's in my REALLY Vintage system. However I pair them with L166's to get the best of both worlds (Mids of 12's and Highs from 166). Wonderful Combo for 70's Classic Rock..well recorded or not.
