Thread: Shunyata Omega QR-s

Received this new power cable this past week and I’m into the 5th day. It’s powering my dCS Vivaldi DAC from my Denali 6000/T (while awaiting the Everest that’s been stuck at a FedEx terminal awaiting unloading). I believe it’s finally settling in. And it’s quite a big boost in performance. About a day or so into using the cable (I know that was far too soon to make any reasonable assessment, but I’m greedy) it was already providing more than a hint at what it would offer up.

Sort of like Dorothy opening the door from her home in the Wizard of Oz - suddenly spectacular color (we aren’t in Kansas anymore). And, unlike the Omega Ethernet which to my mind is a real step up in resolution - getting a better eyeglass prescription, the Omega QR-s is like a personal Hubble telescope, or electron microscope. It’s peeling back and exposing layers of sound while also, somehow bringing forth low level details that were not in evidence.

And it also seems, since the DAC is dealing with both the digital and analog sides of the information spectrum, that it is properly elevating the actual output of sonic elements while keeping any noise at bay.

The only downside is that it is ruthless in exposing bad recordings, especially where compression is concerned. But when playing the good stuff, it’s glorious. You’re really immersed in the soundscape. And that’s especially true in great jazz and live recordings.

And I’m beginning think it is particularly great at ensuring that the DAC’s “timing” as regards starting and stopping, and thereby delivering the goods to the preamp, is part of the magic (and I’m still awaiting a pair of v2 Sigma AES/EBU cables that have been “misplaced” by UPS for over 2 weeks (another story, for another day).

So, if you’ve a chance to audition the QR-s by all means do so. You’ll be in for quite a treat.

I assume the Omega QR to the DAC is just a temporary thing, and ultimately it will connect the Everest to the wall, right?

Omega QR-S, is for source equipment

The Transparent cables are Clock cables. These are not network based. The only networked cables I’ve run across involve analog ones, such as speaker and interconnects. I use MIT/Spectral type of these, as designed for my Spectral gear as spec’ed by Spectral.

As for sources I use a Roon Nucleus player that feeds the dCS Vivaldi stack (via Shunyata Omega Ethernet - Uptone EtherREGEN switch - dCS Vivaldi Upsampler - dCS Vivaldi DAC). Also using the dCS Vivaldi Clock which is using the aforementioned Transparent 75 ohm clock cables. And I’ve a Cybershaft OP21A-D master clock that uses a pair of clock cables that feed the dCS Clock and the EtherREGEN.

UPS has “misplaced” the Shunyata shipment of their v2 Sigma Clock cables, so I’ve been using a pair of BJC ones.

There is also an alternative theory. The more high-end your sources the less need for other gizmos to make them better.

We’re all at the mercy of links in the chain. But I agree that the fewer, but well designed, the better. However, getting each designer to agree is often the fly in the ointment. Just take the area of component grounding, for one...
