Re: New Shunyata v2 and XC cables arrive

I received my Sigma NR V2 and Sigma XC a couple of weeks ago. But even with the KPIP treatment, they still need a good week + of burning in before settling. The good thing is that the changes during the burning in procedure is much smaller than in previous generations like the Sigma HC and the Anaconda seriesNew Shunyata v2 and XC cables arrive

Wow, if they sound only half impressive as the look, they will be absolutely marvelous. Mike, please let us know what you hear and don't hear...

I'm not clear on the grey cable as that's not an option on their website. Is that the standard color for Omega XC?

Re: New Shunyata v2 and XC cables arrive

I have received about a week ago a pair of Sigma NR V2 to feed my Devialet dual mono.

    They are beautifully finished indeed.

i did a few other changes at the same time so it’s hard to isolate their impact, but overall they seem to have contributed to an even more neutral sound without any limitation whatsoever but that of the recording on the entry side and of my room on the delivery side.

The Devialet and Wilson Benesch being as close as it gets to ideal components, my expectation of the cables is to take as little as possible from that perfection, and I feel that the V2 have gotten me closer.

    cheers,
    bernard

I also received my Venom V10 and 12 NR's last week -courtesy of an excellent dealer deVAAudio in Kansas -top service for Shunyata -Kudos there been running the Cardas Burn in
disc for a week as well as leaving some dynamic Classical on repeat. The sonics still show slight "glare" on upper mid lower treble compared to my previous NBS Statement cords I sold
but the detail is as I remember and the bass is more "fuller' but not boomy. I'm hoping the wee edginess I noticed will evaporate after fuller burn in of the PC's --they are the only thing changed in the chain. Impressed with the finish and presentation of the PCs.

New Shunyata v2 and XC cables arrive

We have all four cables breaking in right now. Will start the critical listening in a week. I did give a quick listen to the Omega XC on my Denali 6000s/v2 last night. Positive early impressions. Our Everest 8000’s arrive late this week, early next week.

Bruce: according to Shunyata, they do not recommend any burn in treatment after the KPIP process - Other treatments may destroy the effect of the KPIP process - you should only play music.

Agreed. After KPIP, simply play music. You CAN use the adapter Shunyata has provided me to plug them into a lamp, fridge, freezer, etc. Myself? I just play music.

    Bruce,

There is no damage done to the cable by playing any CD or music source though your system. What our warning is about is using “cable cookers” to “burn-in” the cables. These are external devices that you plug the cables into. They vary in exactly what they do but most send pulsed square waves or other waveforms often at high currents through the cable. Shunyata Research cables are treated with our proprietary KPIP process that conditions the cable. These cable cookers may screw up that conditioning in such a way that the cable will no longer perform to its potential. The only way fix it would be to send the cable back to us to be reconditioned.

Second warning: DO NOT subject any of our cables to cryogenic treatment. Especially harmful is what some call “full immersion” cryogenics. Essentially you are placing the cable in liquid nitrogen. The proper method to cryogenically treat items is to use a computer controlled system that lowers the temperature a couple of degrees at a time over a longer period of time. This avoids “thermal shock” that can and does damage all types of materials including metals. Cryogenic treatment was originally designed to treat steel drilling bits and then expanded to other metal tools and engine parts. Although cryogenic treatment, when done properly, may not cause visible damage to a power cable or signal cable, it can cause long term consequences. Specifically it causes changes to plastics and extruded dielectrics that may cause them to crack or age prematurely. Any use of cryogenics in our cables voids the Lifetime Warranty.

Ah!- Thank you Caelin for the reply -- I seriously had no idea using one of the many "burn in discs" commercially available, could be harmful but as you explain
it's the Cable Cooker that conflicts with your treatments--I presume you would not be on Alan Kafton's Xmas card list anymore--!!
I did own one once I must admit --but no longer-probably saved my cables a trip for reactivation/etc.

Anyway all noted and playing some Beethoven on repeat --sounding better and better!

    Thank you again,

    Bruce

As we have advised for over 15 years, the best method to burn-in power cables is to simply run AC current through them. If you want to do that without playing your audio system 24/7 or to accelerate the process, hook them up to a fan. Not a refrigerator, not a humidifier.

I have nothing against cable burn-in devices. Just don’t use them on our cables. We have our own superior process that works and is permanent.

Our customer service has received many calls where the customer reports that our cable sounds bright or edgey, “even after full burn-in”. After more questions we discover that the customer or the dealer had used a cable burner/cooker. We tell them to put the cable on a fan for 3-5 days - problem solved. Sometimes the easiest solution is also the best.

Get a 5-15R to C14 adapter which allows you to daisy chain multiple power cables and connect them to a fan.

After 2 weeks of casual listening, things are starting to sound pretty great here with the wall -> Sigma NR V1 -> PS Audio P10 -> Sigma NR v2 x2 -> devialet combo.

I must confess that I have a hard time understanding the physics of cable burn-in, but I have to admit that the sound did improve beyond any possible doubt.

Maybe you can build a cable adapter in the SR-Z form with a built in QR/BB device so you can daisy-chain two (or more) cables together to achieve a longer reach.

Now, all you need is a Denali V2 so you can experience what the QR/BB device brings to the "equation".

At this point the Everest probably makes more sense but yes. 😀

I am already tired at the thought of having to move the P10. I increasingly dislike heavy pieces of audio equipment.

The concern then is that there is going to be very little left to improve... Does it mean I’ll finally get to listen to some music? 😜

    Cheers,

Yep, the QR/BB device in Everest is 3X larger than Denali, so you'd really get the full impact of it with Everest.

And, yes, I thought listening to music was goal...

I’m hoping that the Everest will be my last power conditioner. I also owned several P10s and their weight became most apparent when I needed to ship them back to PSA for servicing.

Years ago, I used to share with my mom all the audio stuff that used to buy. She asked me, “Do you ever get time to listen to the music?” She had a point.

    True enough.

I have a few on-going improvements projects that should hopefully complete by summer and I firmly set to not touch anything beyond them for a few years.

    Congrats.

Let it settle for a week before drawing any "serious" conclusions. Having jumped from Denali v2 to Everest, what I will say is the improvement across the board is not subtle.

Denali notably outperforms other PD's, but Everest is completely in another class by itself.

    Just like the mountain.

Thanks for the advice and encouragement. Shunyata has not let me down yet. I am aware of the break-in time and will not make quick judgments. Needless to say I am a bit excited. BTW, I have Denali’s scattered among our main home and vacation homes. Both my wife and I like what they do for video too.

Yep, I understand your excitement. First time I heard Everest, it took me all of...5 seconds to hear how much it was better than Denali. It is NOT subtle.

Denali is like the Manthey Racing Porsche GT2 RS that set the production car lap record at the Nordschleife at Nurburgring.

Everest is like the Le Mans winning, 33 year-long Nurburgring record-shattering Porsche 919 Evo Hybrid.

Both are amazing, one is more amazing than the other.

Our XC cables arrived over a week ago and have been burning in. Everest 8000 number one landed last night. I’ll crack it open today. Omega XC is ready to feed the Everest.

Very exciting! Are you going to compare PCs on the Everest or is it the Omega XC only?

I get my Everest on Friday. Will be using my VH Audio Trans PC for it (which is what I'm using on my Triton v3 currently). Just mentally can't get over the hump of buying an $8k power conditioner and then spending that same amount on a cable for it (although that grey finish looks amazing aesthetically with the Everest - not that it matters though given that no one but me will see that cable behind the rack). I'll probably try the Sigma NR v2 at some point for my monos to see if that's a PC that can finally dethrone the King Cobra CXs in my system (will be interesting as my cables are all copper throughout).

We do have Sigma XC, Alpha XC and Omega XC. I doubt we will be comparing. We will stick with the Omega XC on the Everest, Sigma XC on the Denali and Alpha XC on the Hydra.

King Cobra CX, doesn't that correspond to the Omega series today? It was beyond the Anaconda which corresponds to the Sigma level today.

Anyhow, I'm curious about the Omega but I know the specs of my wall cable and I'm sure my Sigma XC already dwarfs it.

IIRC, the King Cobra was 05 AWG; Omega XC is 04 AWG, so I would hypothesize Omega has more DTCD capability than King Cobra.

King Cobra CX is an older design, so I'm pretty confident Omega XC will outperform it, and likely by a notable margin. Shunyata has made significant improvements in design, geometry, and materials science in Shunyata PCs over the last decade. Even the entry-level Venom HC V2 outperforms the Black Mamba CX from about a decade ago, and which sold back then for approx 2X the price of a Venom HC V2 today.

Congratulations. Bet you can’t wait until Friday comes. Indeed, adding a cable at almost the price of the Everest is a bit hard to swallow, but I have found; at least with Shunyata that every new line of cable is quite an improvement over that last. I’ve also found that with Shunyata Distributors that the power cord going from the wall outlet to the Distributor (Conditioner) is very important.

My original plan was to first use my Sigma v1 PC with my incoming Everest before using the Omega XC to see what the Omega brings to the mix, but Caelin recommenced using the Omega XC with the Everest so that they can burn-in together. I understand that the sound will significantly change as they break-in.

At some point I will use the Everest with my Typhon QC with the incoming Sigma XC umbilical between the Typhon and Everest to see what that does. Not sure if that would be redundant or be too much of a good thing? I’ll see.

Having used different OCC cables and the NCF connectors from Furutech during the years and tried them on Shunyata's different generations of PD's from Hydra 8 to Triton V3 and Denali, you are not even close to maxing out your Triton V3's with the 10ga VH OCC cable and neither the Everest. I'm not saying you need to buy that Omega now, but a Sigma XC will seriously charge that Everest nicely. A 10ga VH OCC/NCF cable will not be close.

Even a used Sigma HC will probably be a better choice than the 10ga VH OCC cable for PD duty.

Agreed 100%. There is NO comparison between a 10 gauge PC and a Sigma XC, let alone an Omega XC. Not even in the same universe.

Caelin is giving you excellent advice.

My guess is using your Typhon QR in conjunction with Everest will prove to be unnecessary and also unecessarily complicated. Simpler is better.

Everest completely breaks new ground as far as PDs go...if your experience is like mine, you're gonna be gobsmacked as to how good it is.

Perhaps the value would be the previous gen Sigma EF to power the conditioner. If the cost of the new XC was prohibitive at this time.

Is Shunyata still running that 20% off deal on the previous generation cables?

Re: New Shunyata v2 and XC cables arrive

I very much like Shunyata products - I have over the years purchased a Denali 6000/S, Denali 6000/T, Triton v3 and King Cobra CX and Anaconda CX PCs and now will shortly be evaluating the Everest, intend to get a Denali v2 for my A/V system in the near future and might later consider the Sigma v2 PCs for my M400s.

I know people are trying to help but I've done my homework evaluating options in my system (including a 6 gauge cable) and the Trans was the choice in my system for that usage - note that I don't plug my M400s into the Triton v3.

I did not intend my comment to start a discussion as to comparison of products between companies in what is a pure Shunyata thread and I'll let everyone get back to the normal programming now.

The Everest came earlier today. Only after about 5 hours on the grid, the Everest + Omega is on a whole different level. Indeed so good, that I don’t have much interest in trying the Typhon with it, but eventually I do need to assess it with the Everest. One never knows. The dynamics and blackness of the Everest + Omega is amazing with my front end gear and preamp.

that being said, in my system, my Denali 6000S v2 was improved by the Typhon QR. I wonder what Caelin has up his sleeves to complement the Denali??

My Triton v3 powering my audio (Anthem) in my separate home theater setup has one up on the Denali in there, although the Denali is super powering the video in there.

Gotta admit that the Everest is pretty formidable and appropriately named in size alone.
