TAD CR-1 in a Small Room?

When you were young were you ever passionately in love with a girl but the maintenance required to sustain the relationship eventually wore you down so that the reasons you loved her no longer mattered? That's where I am at with my Raidho D-3's. I love the ribbon tweeter and how it presents detail. If I move my listening position just a tad or the speakers even a tiny bit, everything goes out of whack and I find myself chasing the bass, or image or soundstage around the room again. Despite what I love about them, they have to go.

I have a relatively small room - 14 feet wide, 25 feet long and 10 feet high. My short list of potential replacements are all stand mounted (no more Raidho's) and includes the TAD CR-1. It is a "bookshelf" speaker and from what I've read, it doesn't hate small rooms. Anyone have any experience with them in such a room? The audio mag reviews are all very positive. You can see from my signature the gear they would be paired with. I don't see a problem in matching. The only thing I can think of that might be an issue is that the pigtail on the TA Opus speaker cable may not be long enough to reach the binding posts with the speaker on their stands.

I'm pulsing my audio gear sources about taking the D-3's off my hands. I will price them to sell at $20K. They are V-2s in piano black. Lovingly cared for by me and by Mike before me.

Re: TAD CR-1 in a Small Room?

The TAD CR-1's are technically a wonderful speaker, but I found them too forward for my taste. The tweeter was too hot for me. I could not get past that aspect of the sound.

D'Agostino was a wonderful match with them as well as the Music Reference RM-200. The RM-200 was a superb amp on the TAD CR-1's.

I had plenty of bass in my room and detail out the @ss. But, I never connected with them emotionally. They felt cold and devoid of warmth to my ear. They were absolutely perfect late night speakers and excelled at low volume. Everything was there in spades. When the volume was turned up, that's where it felt a little painful to my ear. I tried everything, but they weren't my cup of tea.

One more thing. I found the sound stage more of an oval shape. I do not know why, but it was neither high or low, somewhat wide but I definitely felt a rounding of the edges. My Strads just fill up the room as do my JBL's. Every other speaker but the CR-1's have a pretty big sound stage in my room.

ps, your room dimensions are not small to me. Actually I think is on the bigger side of the scale.

Consider if you are jumping from the frying pan into the fire with the CR-1's. Extensively audition them before pulling the trigger.

Love Joe and Love my TAD CR-1. But totally agree finding the right amp did take 12 auditions to get them right. Best of luck. Although small footprint they do best if at least 7.5-9 ft apart from one another. Very very holographic speaker.

    Hi Eric,

That's big news. What speakers are on your list for a replacement? I'm listening to my Vandersteen 7 MkII right now and very content with their sound. They have a lot of ease and I can listen day and night without any listener fatigue.

    Best,
    Ken
