    Tape Rulz!

I am waiting for some new Revox take up reels, so it will then be time for a new photo!

I just bought this mint beauty, a Studer A721 professional R2R cassette player. Waiting for Swiss shipment. Yes it counts for this thread!

It has been professionally Serviced. The last owner was an enthusiast. He built a prototype "Bias unit adjustment" service card as described by STUDER. Then Calibrated the A721 using a Sound Technology ST-1510A analyzer, the same as STUDER used for development and service. Claims the results were extremely good and unbelievably close the sound quality is to his Studer A807 !! At least with good cassettes.

It was used sparingly and comes out of a McIntosh system. Perfect!

    Re: R2R forum is open

2016 is my R2R holy grail year. As much as I would love a Studer A820 in our living room, The Lady will not have it. I cannot quite convince her that an A820 is a beautiful synchronous piece of art. So I have to think small....

    Latest acquisition:

Sony Walkman WM-D6C Professional cassette recorder. (1984-2002). It is the sort after earlier revision with the amorphous heads and non-surface mounted electronics. The successor to the great WM-D6, this fine, robust all metal example was the best portable recorder ever built. It features Dolby-C, dedicated line inputs and outputs and of course it plays and records Type IV.

This is 1980's production with electronic soul. Later revisions were built with cheaper surface mounted components and had permalloy cylindrical heads. Still, later revisions offered near identical performance but were not that serviceable, therefore fewer survivors.

The SONY WM-D6C is widely known for being the most precise and high performance walkman ever made. It's playing and -specially- recording quality is simply outstanding, and not similar to other walkmans, but to HIFI equipment. In fact, historical reviews indicate that its performance is much better than many HIFI cassette decks.

Incredulously, this example is BNIB from deep storage and has been tested fully functional.

To my ears, the Walkman D6 had unacceptably high wow/flutter; it bettered the D5M in every other espect, though.

I hear that this was a known calibration problem with some units that can be overcome, but yes adjustment is technically difficult.

Beautiful. It is so refreshing to see their preservation and continued productive use. Studer, Nagra are the classics I'm talking about!

When can I move my bed into the middle of that room and sleep with them all?

Studer A721 Cassette Recorder - In memory of Hans Blumer, Audiophile

Earlier in this thread I was excited to post pics of a rare Studer A721 I had purchased from a Swiss enthusiast that was meticulously cared for, serviced and calibrated. I purchased privately in good faith having never met the seller.

Today this wonderful vintage piece cleared customs and arrived safely. The shipment was meticulously packed and double boxed. I took the time to carefully unpack and hooked it up immediately to test that all was good. I was certainly eager to listen to how it sounded. Indeed very musical, full of dynamics and of course that precise depth of presence that tape is so good at delivering.

Sadly, the seller, Mr Hans Blumer passed away suddenly during the Studer's transit to Australia.

Hans included an auto-bias card that he hand built with the aid of published Studer schematics. This optional service card was extremely rare and remains difficult to find as a spare part, so he decided to build one from scratch.

The great thing about Studer design was that their products were very modular and they used very high quality components to satisfy the rigours of a professional market. This allowed Studer products particularly 'A' models to be setup in various configurations. It also facilitated technical maintenance and serviceability. Their manuals were comprehensive and included detailed schematics for every electronic pathway. These were the days before PCB surface mounting.

Hans was most thoughtful and attentive to set the power selector to 240v (Australia) and to provide a test tape. Listening to the irony of Han’s personal tape recording however was emotionally heart wrenching for my wife and I. We of course were overcome by melancholy listening to "Johnny Mann Singers" rendition of "Scarlet Ribbons" followed by "Greenfields". Side-B, was more uplifting with an early Barbara Streisand recording.

We are grateful and pleased to have this fine piece in our home where it will be used enthusiastically for years to come.

In memory of Hans Blumer, Audiophile.

    Thank you.

Here are my Ampex ATR 102's. The back one uses a Doshi 3.0 prepro for playback updated 12/16. The front one was redone by Mike Spitz of ATR Services 8 years ago. Both have 1/4" and 1/2" headblocks. The back one also has a 1/4" 4 track stereo playback head for 4 track stereo tapes. Most of my 15ips 2 track tape collection, about 500 tapes.

The Akia GX-636 is a fine sounding quarter track machine. I don't do any live recording direct to it because the Revox B77 Mk II half track machine has superior signal to noise and greater dynamic range. I use the GX-636 primarily when someone comes to me with quarter track audition tapes they want copied to DAT or cassette for mailing purposes. It is a smooth operating reel to reel and I am fortunate to have the wired remote controls for the Akia and the Revox.

6 years ago this was my herd of RTR decks.

    2 Studer A-820's, one Nagra 'T', and an ATR-102. I also had a Nagra IV-S mini deck.

to help fund my speaker (MM7) and amp (dart 458) upgrades I culled the herd to 'just' the 1/4" and 1/2" Studer A-820's. so I'm muddling by with those 2 these days.

Is that all you got ....
Unfortunately, no. I didn't take a shot of another bookcase full of 15ips 2track in my main listening room, or the boxes of 7.5ips 4track tapes in storage. :-( Larry

So where is the best place to begin looking for a R2R deck?

Any pointers would be appreciated especially from sources that deal with 240V versions!

    Cheers

    Howie

    Re: R2R forum is open

Here at last. The legendary ATR-102. This is made in 1980 and is in working condition. However, the capstan has worn out its rubber so I am planning to change the capstan and the timer wheel assembly along with it. I am looking at atrservices, athon and other manufacturers, and open to suggestions.
I used to have r2r machines but this is no consumer or a prosumer machine, this is the real deal so happy. There is a learning curve in front of me but I am willing to go down that route. Getting oscilloscopes, calibration tapes etc.
Started buying hq tapes but wont be playing them until I turn this machine into its tip top condition.
