    Best vinyl purchase under $50

David's post regarding the most you've ever spent on a record got me thinking. We know those gems that cost a fortune and sometimes we're willing to pay the asking price.

But what gems have you found under $50? I'm not talking about just the music. I'm talking about the quality of the recording and most importantly (for this survey at least) the quality of the pressing (10/10 - dead quiet on your table).

For me - this has to be Neil Young - Live at Massey Hall - 1971.

That's great David, as did I. But I'm talking about killer pressings. See criteria above.

Oh Mike, my dad is riddled with OCD. The vinyl handed down to me is pristine/mint and most have the original shrink warp, labels, price tag, etc. I have ran all the vinyl through my ClearAudio Double Matrix Sonic and am using new sleeves. They are, of course, flawless. If it's not perfect, why bother. Yawn.

Let me ask this another way - what recent purchase under $50 really impressed you from a sonic/music/pressing quality standpoint?

I purchased an alleged used copy of Morcheeba's LP Blood Like Lemonade for under 10 bucks. Mint and included an unused MP3 digital download. Have you ever heard of Morcheeba, Mike? They are a modern band. Very kewl! Anyway, the vinyl: mint/looks unplayed. I ran it through, of course, my ClearAudio Double Matrix Sonic. I didn't bother with my Klaudio or AudioDesk. The sonic clarity...radical! Awesome!

I owe the discovery of this wonderful record to Mark Jones. Amazing sonics and unfamiliar versions of great songs. Pure joy to own. Anthology Vol 3.

Never mind Live at Massey Hall. From the same time period and mostly the same songs, run don't walk to your keyboard and buy a copy of Live at the Cellar Door. Massey Hall holds around 2500-2700 people. The Cellar Door club in D.C. held 200 people. The recording quality and the vinyl quality for Live at the Cellar Door are off the charts good. You feel like you are sitting in the front two rows when you listen to Live at the Cellar Door. It is a way more intimate concert than Live at Massey Hall and the sound has much more immediacy and dynamic range than Massey Hall. I never listen to Massey Hall anymore because life is too short when you have Live at the Cellar Door to play.

Another one for Neil fans is the bootleg 1971 BBC album. You can often find it entitled "Harvest Live". The video of the concert is here:

I will call you on Massey Hall, and raise with the new Universal re-do Nick Drake: Pink Moon. I heard Cellar Door on my friends rig, and it was quite good. I would have to hear it side by side with Massey though. Most of my gems are early presses though. Warner Green label American Beauty is the first that comes to mind. We compared it to the Rhino, and the new 45. Everybody in the room preferred the original. Wish we had the older MFSL Stan Ricker 33, but we didn't. Great thread Mike !!!
