I agree Mike. That's the best way to know for sure.

Did you ever look at that other clock for the Esoteric?

The SRS Perf 10? No, I never checked it out. I'd rather get the G-01 which has a better power supply and 22 MHz output option that sounds superior to 10 MHz.

What PCM DAC chip does the Lampizator GG use? Is this a well kept secret? Somebody must know.

    Hi Audiosharks,

I have my golden gate coming tomorrow having been fitted with the new discrete r2r PCM engine - can't wait. This is going to be fun. Anyone else had this done or planning to?

    Hi Bill,

Congrats! You may be the first around here. It will be interesting to hear how close the upgraded PCM engine gets to the DSD performance. Please keep us posted.

Congrats Bill! I've heard it makes the PCM sound as good as the DSD. We shall see. I'm considering a Big 7, Single Ended, Quad DSD, new case, new PCM engine.

Interesting. They mention inexpensive. Don't resistors impart their own sound? Seems counterintuitive to the approach with DSD. BUT - I've heard from someone who has a Lampi with the new PCM board that it IS a nice step up. Cool! Lampizator Golden Gate

Add myself to that list. I've put my order in for a second Golden Gate, fully loaded......with the new r2r as well. My current unit is getting better each day, as the Psvane WE 101's break in. Playback is simply wonderful.

The new pcm seems to be more dynamic…ACrack thinks its a lot better, but even the old style has been improved too, so not sure of anything except that both pcms have stepped up a notch or 2. DSD is still my favorite, but not easy to tell them apart. All SE experience so far.

Congrats Bill! I think the GG's new R2R circuitry will enable owners to enjoy native PCM without having to convert to DSD. In my opinion, this process always indicated that PCM needed to be improved rather than the discovery of a superior process. In any case, now you have two viable choices for PCM listening.

    Hi Ken and Sharks,

I believe that the new r2r PCM implementation (based on listening last night) is a significant improvement over my original PCM engine. I experienced:

    > Great vividness and much more presence
    > Signficantly more resolution
    > More dynamic and propulsive bass

Together these bring it very close to the dsd performance but I still need a lot more listening time to draw final conclusions. The dsd engine always had this spooky clean resolution of the finest details yet with musicality and tone to die for - this PCM engine achieves the same trick. I am so thrilled because it opens up new options regarding necessity of upsampling to dsd of which I was a proponent - I need more time in order to reach any final conclusion but either way I am *very* happy. Hats off to Lukasz.

If you don't want to be arsed faffing with a PC and upsampling, I honestly believe that you can be thrilled now with native PCM. I would not be surprised if quad upsampled and a full blown bugheaded PC would pip it though. I am sure that Native DSD will be a different kettle of fish though but I am talking either native PCM or upsampled PCM - take this with pinch of salt though since I need to confirm but in all honestly a native quad dsd recording is something to behold.

Hi guys. I am getting a demo of the Golden Gate in the next day or so to pitch against my Audio Note DAC 5 Special. On the GG, is it best to listen to Redbook as is, or upsample to DSD first. I use a Mac Mini with a linear 12V DC supply and can feed it USB direct or via my M2Tech full stack via USB or BNC/Coax or SPDIF. So the question I guess is, is the new discrete PCM board as good as the well regarded Lampi DSD engine?
Play PCM and DSD native rate first before trying any upsampling.

If upsampling, use HQ Player. With Mac, you cant go above DSD128 anyway.

Hi, what valves are you getting with those? Play natively first. Upsampling requires a lot of settings and computer power, if you are a newbie you might upsample incorrectly making it sound bad.

Also, what is the rest of your system?
