I would love to, but in the meantime, I think Roy Gregory's review is spot on.

Also, look for something new company from Focal in the very near future. Exciting times ahead!

I couldn't agree more. I will take my Scala V2's over any Magico, Wilson, YG, Vivid, etc. costing anywhere near or even double the same price. The Scala V2 tweeter needs a few hundred hours to smooth out, but now mine is like butter and paired with the Devialet, it's remarkable. What you save on cables by using a Devialet, you invest in some Siltech speaker cables and WOW! It's a world beater system for a fraction of what other comparable systems cost.

Focal is one of the true leading speaker engineering firms, with a keen focus on speaker efficiency for life like dynamics.

Will be interesting to see what new speakers they come out with at Munich - if anything. Fingers crossed.

Don't get too excited Mike... You're just not used to having speakers long enough to break them in.

life-like dynamics is a worthy goal

I started thinking this way after I had my old Dynaudio C1s- exceptional speakers, but I always had to crank em up to get the sound going. I found myself listening at levels really too high for my ears.

Mike, do you have experience with Revel's Beryllium tweeter? If so do you mind comparing/contrasting the Revels' against the Focals' upper mid/treble regions?

Plenty! I've owned the Salon 2's and Studio 2's. The Revel tweeter is exceptionally smooth, but I often wondered if it wasn't just a tad rolled off. As John Atkinson said in his review of the Salon 2's, "Due to this increasing directivity in the top audio octave, the Salon2 might sound a bit airless in large or overdamped rooms; the Tweeter Level control, set to one of its two boost positions, will help compensate for this." I always left the tweeter position at normal....so quite possibly, adjusting this up a notch would return some of the sparkle.

The Focal tweeter takes a long long time to break in (300 hours to notice a difference, and some say 700 hours to be full broken in). I'm at that point now, and the tweeter is very smooth without giving up any detail. It's one of the best for sure.

The ribbon tweeter crowd (esp. dynaudio esotar fan club members) usually refers to Focal's beryllium as ear-bleeding run for the hill type. lol IME even Electra's beryllium with proper amplification is preferred over C1 MK2 esotar 2. (and..not shouty Focal Utopia III Scala V2's in the house!)

Agreed. Maybe that was the case 15 years ago, but it's dramatically improved today. I think the current line up has an excellent top end. Mine right now is super smooth. It was a little aggressive out of the box, but right around 300 hours it started to smooth out.

Well then, I guess I'll jump right in and ask: How do the Focal's compare overall to the Revel's? Thanks for the info by the way, getting the benefits of your experience is much appreciated.

I would not trade the Scala V2's for the Salon 2's, if that's what you're asking. The Scala V2's are WAY more efficient, tube friendly, whatever. They have better dynamics, better mids (not recessed), and only give up a titch of overall smoothness on the top end to the Salon 2's. You can also tell that the driver integration is much more seamless.

But I wouldn't buy anything yet. Wait until after Munich (nudge, nudge, wink, wink) - then we can talk again.

How then would you compare the focal Be to Raidho's ribbon? Or for that matter, the D3 vs the Scala overall?

I haven't heard the V2 tweeter, but having owned the D3's, there aren't many tweeters in the world much better than the Raidho ribbon.

Not really talking about 15 years ago. I wouldn't have had much experience with either Focal or Dynaudio then. But I did have both Electra 1008 Be and Dynaudio C1 MK2 a few years back and I couldn't understand why I preferred Be over Esotar2 for the longest time, esp. people were telling me Be was bright and Esotar2 was smooth as butter (it was almost insulting my intelligence that I could not tell what sounds bright and what doesn't). Not only the top end, I also preferred Electra mid-range over C1 as well, but C1 low end was clearly better.

I can understand the discrepancy, xover implementation and system bandwidth can also account for "brightness" , caps used will add a signature, making it not as simple as comparing tweeters from completely different speaker systems .....

My guess is a new hybrid Beryllium adjustable ribbon tweeter that is adjustable for tubes, ss, listener ear height, declining frequency bandwidth for older listeners with an antisibilance & antibright toggle switch.

Thanks. I just purchased an used pair of v2.

I am planning to match Scala v2 with Leben. Did anyone have experience in matching these two? Would resolution suffer? How good Leben is with orchestral?

Scala are also amazing. Definitely a great choice. I seriously wanted to buy them but since I got the brand NIB Stella EM from a distressed sale, for the same price as I would have bought the NIB Scala Evo, I definitely went for the Stella.

Devialet Expert 1000 Pro Dual Mono. After listening to a lot of other options, I still believe Devialet fits extremely well with the Focal Utopia range.
I will try soon to connect 4 Devialet 1000 together so that I see if there is any difference between using just the 2 Devialet 1000 vs. Devialet multi-amp system (4 units).

Keep us apprised of how it goes. I have always thought that the Utopia line does piano as well as any speakers out there.

Noticed this tread has been quiet for awhile. Currently I am driving a pair of Estelon XC with the Devialet OdA. I am thinking of upgrading to a full floor standing pair of speakers and have shortlisted the Focal Scala Utopia Evo and a lesser known brand Vimberg (a sister company of Tidal) the Tonda speakers. Reason, have always been a fan of Tidal but can’t afford their speakers. Pricing wise, the Tonda is pricer. Any comments would be appreciated.
