www.thewhiskyexchange.com This is good web site to have in your back pocket.
I'm not sure if you are into Rye. This is a very good one. Not expensive. Won whiskey of the year. That's unheard of for Canadian Whiskey.

I got lucky coming out of Caymans airport. Picked up duty free a couple of bottles of Johnny Walker Blue $157.50 ea. That was a good bargain. I don't know I would pay regular price. It is but hard to justify at full pop. It is the good.

Sir, no Bourbon is ever Whisky - it is Whiskey.

    Only single malt for me.

Ex-post Correction: The other way around (as now written).

    Re: WHISK(e)Y!

    From the diccionary:

    whiskey | ˈ(h)wiskē |

    noun (plural whiskeys)

1 (also whisky) a spirit distilled from malted grain, especially barley or rye.
2 a code word representing the letter W, used in radio communication.

    USAGE

Is it whiskey or whisky? Note that the British and Canadian spelling is without the e, so that properly one would write of Scotch whisky and Canadian whisky, but Kentucky bourbon whiskey and Irish whiskey.

    ORIGIN
early 18th century: abbreviation of obsolete whiskybae, variant of usquebaugh.

By the way, I prefer single malt also, but I wouldn't say no to a good bourbon.

Yes, usquebaugh = the water of life, similar to the French eau de vie.

I don’t know about the Canadians, but the Irish spell it Whiskey as well.

    WHISK(e)Y!

Both American. I am sure there is also American Champagne.

But, I must apologize: I indeed mixed them up, i.e. ‘Whisky’ is Scottish spelling and ‘Whiskey’ Irish, American, Canadian, Japanese etc.

While Whisky is protected nowadays, there might be producers who already made Whisky/ Whiskey before the rule was signed into an actual law.

well duhhh, perhaps I missed something in your quote ? You stated that no bourbon is ever 'whiskey'. I merely pointed out that in actuality depending on distiller it's spelled both ways, that's all.

‘Champagne’ is a protected appellation, that does not prevent someone calling something they make Champagne, that actually isn’t (until a cease and desist order that is). Same with Cognac, Whisky etc.

    No, they are actually not.

There might be American Whisky, as you pointed out. But it actually is not Whisky, it’s Whiskey. Someone using the naming convention wrong, does not change the fact they are using it wrong.

    Understood?

That said, this is a Scottish interpretation. And while the Scots stick strictly to their ‘Whisky’ spelling for Whisky from Scotland and preferably Single Malt, others are less strict about it and as such in other countries both spellings are used. A number of people think Single Malt is the only proper way to make Whisky. Go figure, and others see it differently.

    Re: WHISK(e)Y!

There ar actually 2 or 3 American Wineries that can call their sparkling wine "Champagne". Renault in New Jersey is one, and I drove there last week to get a case of their Blueberry Champagne from the grapes on the property and Hamonton Blueberries.

My wife got me 2 wonderful bottles by a local distillery Hewn Spirits. I got a Single Malt and a Rye. Yummy and flavorful.

As for all the 'politically correct' BS, yes understood........ my point was that different distillers of Bourbon spell it both ways. In the end I couldn't give a rats rear end, drink what you enjoy, single malt, blended, whatever ..........understood !!

It seems that the Scottish distilleries can't follow demand anymore.
We used to have Macallan 12 years, or 18 years, now we have 'Rare Cask', of Talisker 'Skye', etc.
That being said, the mentioned whiskies are still very enjoyable!

Unfortunately this is now rampant in airport duty free shops all over.
For the real deal look for bottles where the age is specifically mentioned i.e. 12 years, 15 years, 18 years etc.

Some smaller local distilleries are putting out very good product and in my opinion, much better tasting goods than many long time well known brands. Local to me is Hewn Spirits and I am currently working my way, quickly, thru a bottle of the Red Barn Rye and the Reclamation Single Malt. Loving every sip.

They must have released a "batch" a few weeks ago.

Local store still had 2 1.75l bottles of 10 year old on Friday, but no 12 year old.

Yup! Those Glenmorangies are on my list - easier on the palate in warmer climes.
Ardberg has been consistently getting positive reviews in the past few years.

It's definitely a more accessible list than most. That to me is a good thing.
