Lightbulb A High-end Stereo Sound System for Less than Five Grands! ...Speakers, Interconnects, and Cables included!

I'm just about to build one, in my brain, but I'm not finish just yet; so please feel free too.

...A Digital one (with a CD/SACD player as the source; most likely the Oppo BDP-105 for $999 refurbished directly from Oppo).

Two subs; the Hsu VTF-15H = $1,758 for both.

Now I just need a very good pair of speakers (floorstanders or monitors with stands), and a nice integrated amp. ...I still have $2,242.99 to spend.
Watch out! ...It's going to shake (radically; with tremendous power) the house's foundation down!

    * I'll finish building it tomorrow, with a pair of interconnects and speaker wires. ...Most likely from KimberKable.

For the speakers I'm looking at something Canadian perhaps. ...Wide dispersion, with excellent imaging. ...Some depth & height too (holographic).
...And the integrated amp; some' from Europe, with refinement, sophisticated neutrality and musicality (natural). ...Well controlled across the essential audio spectrum of the mid-range chords, and with air too (highs).
Very important here; the matching (synergy) between the speakers and amp/preamp. ...Try that for about two grands!

Good old Canadian made PSB. Synchrony One's can be found in that budget. Probably less. I actually know a fellow who has a pair for sale used.

Another option would be Sonus Faber Venere 2.5's.

I looked for almost 2 years for something better and then I found the Salon 2's. But the Synchrony One's can hold their own with speakers costing many multiples the money that the PSB's cost.

And you don't have to buy subs.

    Hi Bob,

Here are couple of my recommendations.

    1. Totem Model 1 Signature ( found in Canuck ) $1,100 ( probably you can get it for $ 1,000 )

Totem Model 1 Signature (mahogany) - Canuck Audio Mart

with CAMBRIDGE AZUR 840A V2 Integrated Amp $780

CAMBRIDGE AZUR 840A V2 Integrated Amp $2000 Retail SEE PHOTO - Canuck Audio Mart

So you can spend extra $ 469 for the CD's

    2. Totem Arro $950
Totem Arro - Cherry Finish - Less than 12 months old - Canuck Audio Mart

    Sim Audio Moon i-5 $ 1400

Simaudio ( Sim Audio ) Moon i-5 Integrated Amp - Canuck Audio Mart

    $ 1400 + $ 950 = $ 2.350 ( i'm sure you can haggle the price down to your budget )

Re: A high-end stereo sound system for less than five grands! ...Speakers, Interconnects, and Cables included!

Here are a couple of options for a very musical system in the $5k range:

Speakers: Nola Boxers or KEF LS50 both sell for $1.5K
Amps: Rega for $1K or Rogue for $2.3K
    CD: Oppo 105 for $1K to $1.2K
Cables: Kimber Hero ICs w WBT ends $300, Kimber TC12 SCs for $400, Shunyata Venom PC for Oppo $125, Shunyata Z-Viper for the amp for $500

I suppose another way to attack this could be to replace the Oppo with a Mac Mini and add a DAC like the Schiit or even Rega.

Should be a very enjoyable system.

Thanks Jeff. I heard the Nola Boxers and the Rogue amp last year at RMAF and was very impressed. I also heard the KEFs there - very impressive (Golden Ear Award by TAS!).

These two affordable systems are about the musical experience.

Paradigm makes some excellent speakers indeed Kev. The Reference Sudio 20's ($998/pair) would made a good choice, I think.
But then you need to add some speaker stands with them; something solid and of great value (inexpensive; like $100-200 for the pair).

And yes again; as long as we don't go over $1,200 or so. ...Don't forget the stands.
Because that would leave us with roughly $1,040 for the integrated amp and interconnects and speaker wires.
    ...It's doable.

Nelson, our budget won't allow us to contemplate this excellent integrated amp and music server.
Or in the case of the int. amp, unless we can get a pair of great speakers in the five-six hundred dollars range or so.
...It's doable. ...Because we can get interconnects and speaker wires from Blue Jeans Cable or so.

Mark, if you read my first original post carefully, you would know that the high-end stereo sound system that I'm putting together is unique, extremely powerful (good for any type of music at all), and is only imaginary.
I am NOT personally looking for a new pair of speakers, but someone else might.

And! ...The two subs in that system are an integral part (essential) of the full balanced equation.
And that's why monitors with stands would do very well (easier to position for best imaging).
And the two subs' free positioning allow for a very solid and balanced foundation.

    * The main purpose of this thread is to see what I, and all of you/us together (or alone if you prefer) can come up with, and intelligently recommend a high-end audio stereo system to someone with a budget of five grands, or less.
    And the requisites are:
    - A system that can play ALL types of music, and with great authority (Live, with you-are-there realism).
    - A system that images very well (holographic).
    - A system that is mostly Musical and Natural sounding, without any particular emphasis (neutral all across the full audio spectrum).

Excellent! ...And yes, you can also go with the Oppo BDP-103 ($499), and match it with a separate DAC.
    {IMO there's no obligation to pay $1,199 for the 105 when you can get it for $999 refurbished from Oppo directly; but that's me.}

Re: A High-end Stereo Sound System for Less than Five Grands! ...Speakers, Interconnects, and Cables included!

For speakers; perhaps the Monitor Audio Silver RX6 for $1,250/pair (full-range floorstanders, but these aren't Canadian).
    * I'm not that anal anyway.

Also, the Dynaudio Excite X12 for $1,200/pair (but they need stands).

The Paradigm Reference Studio 20 v.5 like I previously mentioned; those retail for $1,498/pair, so we'll have to deal wisely here ($1,000/pair).

And the Sequerra Metronome 7.7 Mk.6 ($850/pair); but only sold direct (free shipping).
...They would complement my two Hsu subs real well.
    - From what I read, they are "superbly focused", with "pinpoint imaging" and "top-notch" resolution.

    DALI Zensor1 ($475/pair, without stands).

And last, for very little money, the Pioneer SP-BS41-LR ($149/pair and stands necessary). But these aren't Canadian made; they were designed by Andrew Jones, and manufactured in China.

*** Personally, I would try to strike a deal on the Dynaudio Excite X12, and also give a serious listen to the Paradigm Reference Studio 20 v.5 for that $999/pair deal. ...Then we got some $$$ for the stands.

    __________________________

Next post will be about the integrated amp. ...Stay tuned.

As for the interconnects and cables; no sweat.

    _______________
    _______________

I still love best Paul's choices, a lot! ...The Totem Model 1 Signature speakers, with stands. ...Canadian.

And between the Cambridge Azur 840A V2 and Simaudio Moon i5 integrated amps, I think that the Cambridge Azur (European. ... British?) would be the one (when considering the additional cost of the speaker stands and wiring everything).

And that, would be my final system (with Paul's help). ...Still enough money left for some nice solid stands and quality OFHC (six 9s) purity copper cables from KimberKable.

This system would truly rock! ...With anything!

Magnepan's are the best value out there, new or used and you can easily build a formidable system for under 5k! If they don't float your boat, used Vandersteen's...

Polk is having 50% off all their speakers this weekend. Their LSiM series are very impressive for that price! [News] All polk speakers 50% off

A pair of used GoldenEar Triton Two's or Gallo Reference 3.5 would be worth consideration. When Vanns was selling the Mirage OMD-28's for $1699/pair, I snapped them up. Beautiful build quality.

Now THAT could be the start of your killer $5k system. If memory serves me correct, that's about 1/10 their original asking price.

When they first came out they were $7,500/pair! ...Then $3,500/pair. ...And you can find them used for $1,500/pair or less if you really look.

    * I tried to locate the place where I saw them for that ridiculously low price but helas without success (I bet they were sold real fast and then the post removed).
It was only a local sale, and without the boxes.

BUT! My own system here with two (not one but TWO) Hsu VTF-15H subwoofers ($1,758 for both of them in Satin Black, or $1,998 in beautiful Rosenut finish), and mated with those Totem Model 1 Signatures - Mahogany (Paul's choice for roughly $999/pair Cdn without stands), will give you all the Hallelujah voices of the world!

Add a great integrated amp for roughly $999. ...The Cambridge Azur 840A v2 from Paul is only $780 Canadian dollars.
And the Azur 840A v2 provides 200 watts RMS into 4 Ohm loads! ...That is plenty for the Totem Model 1 Signature monitor speakers.

...And the Oppo BDP-105 for also $999 (directly refurb from Oppo, with the same warranty as new), as your source for CDs, SACDs, DVD-Audios, Blu-ray Audios, HDCDs, Digital hi-res music downloads, Wav, FLAC, DSD formats are all supported, and Headphone listening, and a digital processor/convertor (DAC), and a preamp too (with five possible sources and its own volume level control), and also with so many other features that you'll still be all set even after you're long gone (departed from this planet)!
Think of it as your ultimate legacy, your musical heritage to your young lovely daughter.

And strike an overall deal which includes the speakers stands and all the wires, and you're in full orchestral heaven with all the angels sitting on clouds, and for only five grands all together!
    - You still have roughly $465 left for the speaker stands, speaker wires, and interconnects for the source and subs.
KimberKable (used, like from Dave), and quality speaker stands are easily obtainable.

Hey, check out a review of that sub: http://www.hometheater.com/content/h...-15h-subwoofer

I bet that this hi-end stereo system could play orchestral classical music at realistic levels (very loud), and would not feel embarrassed at all among other hi-end stereo sound systems that are much more expensive (say up to $50,000+).

My system (with Paul's help) is totally appropriate for quite large rooms (it has to, with 450 cubic inches of low frequency bass displacement). ...And with roughly 3,000 watts total of peak power output!

+1!!!!!! I can attest to this! With those subwoofers (very good choice by the way) just pick up a pair of Paradigm Studio 20s which I think may run you less than $2K. Of course you'll need stands for those I think. Wait a minute, what about the power source, receiver/amp? By the way, the Kimber cables will not be necessary. The way your going about will still be over $5k I believe?

No, because the Kimber cables you can get on the used market (Dave here has some for sale), plus you always get discount from many audio stores.
I know so because I have several Kimber speaker wires and interconnects myself. ...Never pay full retail price.

I also own several Paradigm speakers in my home theater room. ...But no Studio versions, just yet.

Paradigm is fine for home theater, but for stereo music listening only I want something more high end, refined, exotic, less boxy (appearance?).

    * And by the way, that system from post #31, it is a unique system, not the best but one that is very powerful and can be used with any genre of music: Classical Organ, Orchestral, Opera, Heavy Metal, Hard Rock, Smooth Jazz, Crying Blues, Electronica, RAP, Punk, anything at all. ...That's why I built it in the first place.
And with Paul's help it has also refinement.

Other people can build their own using tubes and stats. ...Go ahead, that's what this thread is for.

Paradigms not good for music? Not high-end enough? You have not heard the Studios then. I think the ones you are referring to are their lower line offerings. The Studios are anything but boxy. Take a look at pics on-line and you'll see. I also find them extremely revealing. They don't color the sound too much if at all actually. I don't like speakers that color the sound. Remember too that the sound has more to do with the source and recording than anything else. Then of course there are our ears to consider in the equation. No two people hear exactly alike which is why it's not a good idea to take speaker recommendations at face value without a listen.

    - Boxy; appearance, looks, outside build.

    - More high end than Paradigm; that's right, lots of those around.

    - And I certainly never said that they ain't no good at reproducing music; you did (assumed that I did).

    - No, I was referring to ANY one of all their lines.

    - I've seen them all; few of my audio dealers are Paradigm dealers.

    - I love Paradigm speakers; they are made to sound real good, with great thinkers in the company, and with the help of the NRC facilities. They make their own quality drivers and use some of the best materials too. ...Even in their bottom lines. ...And they won more awards than anyone else year after year after year. ...One of the most solid speaker manufacturers coming from Canada, my home-grown country.

    * Just want to make sure here, so that no one misinterprets my wordings.

They were favorably reviewed in an audiophile publication and they cost less than $1000/pr! I bet a set a tubes and these would be great!

Yes Mike, those too would do.

And yes again; as long as we don't go over $1,200 or so. ...Don't forget the stands.
Because that would leave us with roughly $1,040 for the integrated amp and interconnects and speaker wires.
    ...It's doable.

Yes Doug, if the prices are in the right range.

Paradigms are Canadian too ya know.

Ok, I am a bit confused as you did say: "Paradigm is fine for home theater, but for stereo music listening only I want something more high end, refined, exotic, less boxy (appearance?)."
Yes, everything in their budget line below the Studios is boxy and quite frankly not impressive in sound quality either, however would do fine for a quick home theater set up. That said, the Studios on up are high-end and can hold their own against speakers costing twice as much. I find them to be rather revealing and colorless to my ears, perfect for music (and HT if one chooses), but that's me and my ears alone, everyone's mileage varies.
As for not being high-end enough, at the price I paid for my Studio 100s, they better well be high-end enough. Speakers more high-end than the Paradigms? If talking build, then in my opinion, no, just higher priced. That being said though, there are a few speakers just as nice out there in the same range. Paradigm being just one. Great Canadian company by the way.
    Just my worthless opinion.

A high-end stereo sound system for less than five grands! ...Speakers, Interc...

Hey guys. New here, but been lurking for a few weeks. This thread sounded fun so I thought I would spec out what I would do with $5K for a new system.

    Here it goes.

    - Woody

    From speakers to source.

    Kef LS50's - $1500

Speaker cables would be Clear Day Double Shotguns - $450

Skylan Stands for the Kefs - $350

    Job 225 - $1700

Interconnects would be Clear Day - $165x2 ($330)

    Luminous Audio Axiom 2 Passive - $250

    Schiit Bifrost DAC - $350

Source is the computer you're looking at this forum on.

    Grand total: $4930

I would have posted nice photos of my choices, but I won't let me with a low post count. :-)

A brilliant system, Larry. Magneplanars models are hard to beat in their price ranges, especially the 1.7. The Peachtree integrated is jaw-dropping value and I've always thought the Rhythmik's look terrific in their price ranges.

I'm not sure I spring for the Cardas Parsecs on a $5k budget -- but then I haven't heard them.

You don't mention any source though. Based on my experience with the Schiit Bifrost Uber DAC with USB I'd say it's a safe bet at $520 or step up to the fully balanced Gungnir with USB at $850.

If a person wanted to avoid planars, (you'd need a heck of a reason), I'd suggest looking at the Golden Ear Triton Two or Three. With either you might get away without a separate sub, and the Three's at $3000 a pair are no more that the Maggie 1.7's plus the Rhythmik.

Re: A high-end stereo sound system for less than five grands! ...Speakers, Interconnects, and Cables included!

This is an interesting thread, and something I am going through for my office system right now... something nearfield and a sub (already have the integrated). I can say that 5k is certainly doable... especially for some used equipment.

Here's what I'm listening to, but it's some used gear.

    Klyne SK-5 pre (used) $1000
Prima Luna Prologue 4 (new) $1400
    Acoustat 2+2s (used) 500
    OPPO 105 (new) $1100
    AQ cables 500
    RSA Haley (used) 500

That's about 5 grand and it sounds really nice. I've also substituted the Vandersteen 1Cis ($1100/pair new) but that goes a bit over budget.

Re: A high-end stereo sound system for less than five grands! ...Speakers, Interconnects, and Cables included!

Alright, so I'm going to up the ante of this proposition by adding in a couple guidelines....

    1) Every pick needs to feature current, in-production gear. Vintage or recent-vintage gear need not apply.

    2) You will have to assume that you're paying full retail price (minus tax) for all of the components in the system. This means used gear, industry hook-ups, gifts, and 'sale items' won't count.

So, let's get right to it!

For a classic full-range system, here's what I came up with:

    Speakers: Klipsch RF-7 II's ($3200)
    Integrated: Dayens Ampino (upgraded) ($672)
Source: Indiana Line Puro CD-player (around $700)

Total: $4,572. This will leave you with enough financial headroom to experiment with cables, room treatments, resonance control devices, or what have you. The goal of this system is to give you a full-range, detailed, yet supremely musical experience that'll sound good with every genre of music that you can think of. The only caveat to this system is that setting up the RF-7 II's in a room can be a b***. But once you get them dialed in right - ohhhhh man. They're good. Real good.

For smaller, more intimate spaces, I would consider the following options:

    Speakers:

Totem Acoustic Sttaf ($2150) if you want a fullish-range sound and value holographic imaging, and good tone.
Harbeth P3ESR ($2150) are great if you don't need a lot of bass.
Fritz Morel 6 ($1650) If you want something that's easy to listen to, yet still very versatile.

    Integrated:

Dayens Ampino ($995) - Very open, linear, yet musical sounding. Will match all three speakers well.
Indiana Line Puro 800 (roughly $1050 ) - Built-in USB DAC, a good phono stage, sounds great.

    Source:

Indiana Line Puro CD-Player (roughly $700)

At the systems most expensive configuration, you end up at $3,900. This gives you $1,100 of wiggle room. You could spend that money on speaker stands, room acoustic treatments, an additional component or two like a turntable, streaming device, a separate phono stage (if you end up going with the Dayens), etc...

Honorable Mentions include: Tri Art 'Pebbles' turntable, iFi Phono pre-amp, Rega Brio R , Rega Apollo R, Totem Acoustic Hawk , Rosso Fiorentino Elba , Maggie 1.7i , and I'm sure there are loads of others that I just can't think of right now.

    Total: about $4500

I currently Bluetooth my digital files and CDs from my Mac and sometimes my iPhone. My next purchase may be a JL e110 powered subwoofer, $1.5K, and an upgraded TT cartridge, Orfofon 2M Blue $240.

Adelphos speaker kit from Meniscus. Designed by Jeff Bagby. I've heard these and to say I was stunned was an understatement for these time aligned 2 way speakers. $820 for the premium kit and figure $600 to pay a cabinet maker for the boxes in about any wood you want.

Dual HSU ULS-15 MK2 at $1960 ran as stereo.

    Crown XLS 1502 at $400

Oppo Sonica at $800 as a source and pre-amp

Leaves $500 for starter room treatments (subwoofer pads and first point reflection absorption).

This setup allows for balanced input and outputs for everything including the subs. Figure $80 in XLR cabling from Amazon.
