    Re: Magico A5’s Arrive!!!!

I'm happy with my M3's, for sure. And I'm glad I bought them when I did. The Aussie $ has tanked against the US $ in the past week. If I were to buy A5 at today's exchange rate they would be more than half the price I paid for new M3.

    Re: Magico A5’s Arrive!!!!

From what I can understand in this thread the A5 will replace the S3
Usually an “old” model is replaced by a new one and most people expect or are afraid of a MK XX
So usually you must pay more money for the “upgrade” to he new model
In this case you can save 30 percent of the money and get an upgrade and pay less money for the new one.

This kind of “self-cannibalism” is not so frequent... But maybe will be good for us to See new and better models for less money
I am really very happy to own the S3 MK2 and how they sound, but feel a bit disappointed by Magico and his strategy...

Unless color was an issue it would be hard to justify putting your money down on a new pair of S3Mk2 when A5 is now a competitive and cheaper option.

Wrong. The S3 Mk2 isn’t going anywhere anytime soon and still offers some advantages as discussed.

This will definitely be a good debate for a buyer. I’ll give the tweeter advantage to the S3 Mk2. Love that tweeter. The A5 is damn close though.

Does M3 and S3Mk2 have the same 1" diamond coated Be tweeter?

That is what I noticed most going from Q3 to M3, that tweeter!

Going from S3 to Q3 what I noticed most was everything!

For clarification, the tweeters on the S series are not the same as they are on M series (26mm vs. 28mm and a complete different motor system, almost 3 times the cost on the M).

That M tweeter = mmmmmmm heaven!

Mike, From the press release the tweeter seems to be the same one used in the A3s. Is that correct?

Yes. It actually uses the same 28mm dome, that is in the M, which is very unique in shape and dimensions. It is Magico’s own proprietary dome. All other Be domes out there, except Focal, are 26mm and derived from the same source. However, on the A, it is on a much more economical motor system, and does not have the Diamond coating. It is very good, but not at the level of the M tweeter.

Yes. The communists that run YouTube blocked it for copyright. As if we’ve never heard The Eagles before.

Mike, I loved the MBL 101s at the Suncoast Audio Show. They always are among the best sounding speakers at the show. How do you compare the MBL 120 speakers with the A5s? They both seem to be in the same price range. From your pictures and videos, the A5s look and appear to sound great!

Different horses. Individual tastes will dictate. I’ve given up trying to predict what people will like best/better. My job is to pick the best out there and let people choose.

But I will say this, I’ve stocked up on new pairs of A5’s because I KNOW they will be a big seller.

Is the $20k each speaker or pair? They look like a pretty big step up from the A3.

And if you think that's crazy, my A3's were $9800. I'm pretty darned happy with what they give me for under $10K!

I was bored and bought a Bosch laser measurer and whoops my A3's were off-kilter. Got them centered, played with the L-R distance from center (keeping them 24# from the rear edge to the rear wall)...imaging is phenomenal. For the first time I heard that hokey Roger Waters Perfect Sense Pt 2 truly in 360 degree sound; it's good for speaker set up.

    Sorry to digress!

Mike -- what's in the Naim Stack you're using with the A5's? I have 552/300DR, but a slightly used 500DR is coming day after tomorrow to audition.

A5 look is growing on me. I feel it’s more S7 Lite than S4. Does SPOD work with A5?

I suspect the introductory price of $20K will go up. Seems like a great deal now though. I remember how the S series kind of ended the Qs, at least according to my dealer. I am very impressed with just how comprehensive the Magico speaker line up is, with the three separate lines and many, many price points. They seem to be on a roll. Just when some companies are building massive four tower designs, Magico comes out with the A series targeted at a completely different high end segment.

Mike, thanks for posting the videos. Have you made any with an acoustic string quartet or classical symphony?

Mike, how well do the drivers integrate? One of the amazing things about the A3 is their coherence - almost like a poor man's M2. I don't mind the A3 tweeter. Some think it's dark but I've never heard that signature. If anything it helps to blend in with the midrange and that coherent disappearing trick where all the drivers sound as a whole. No tweeter sticking out at all. Do these have the M DNA to do that coherence and disappearing trick as well?

With the exception of the Magico V3, I have found every Magico speaker I've heard to be extremely coherent. It is one of the real strengths of the brand, IMO.

If anything, they do an even better disappearing act (think planar like). The new midrange allows an even greater coherence to the bass drivers and the tweeter is beautifully integrated.

This isn’t a case where the A5 is a little better than the A3, it’s a LOT better and the A3 is a super performer.

Frankly, they may have made the A5 a little too good - if you know what I mean.

Just wondering why you make an exception for the V3 in the complete (old and new) Magico line up for being "coherent", IMHO even the V3's are coherent speakers, they like a bit of power, but then they fill the room with a very neutral sound.

By the way, no problem to have another opinion, just wondering about the experience you had with the V3.

This isn’t a case where the A5 is a little better than the A3, it’s a LOT better and the A3 is a super performer.

Frankly, they may have made the A5 a little too good - if you know what I mean.

Yes, I auditioned the V2 and Mini II at Goodwin's High End in Boston. They both sounded excellent, and extremely coherent. About six months later, I went to Sound by Singer in NYC and heard the Mini II and V3, at opposite ends of the same room. The Mini II sounded pretty much as I remembered it sounding, but the V3 seemed to have poor woofer integration with the rest of the drivers. It was not at all coherent. I assumed the set up was fine because I also heard the M5 in a different room that same afternoon. It sounded like a much bigger Mini II. Of all the speakers, only the V3, to my ears, sounded less "of a piece". I could hear the separate drivers. Based on these auditions, I decided to buy the Mini II. I now own the Q3. I have not heard any of the new A series, but I have heard the M Pro, the M2, the M3, the S5 II, the S1, the S7, the Q7, the Q5, the Q1.

I'm looking at whats available at the price of the A5 and I think this speaker offers a better value than the a3. I started looking at $10k speakers when I decided to upgrade and the current offerings, persona 3f, kanta2, A3 all looked to be designed with subs to supplement them and i'm of the phobia that loud clean spl requires big boxes. The a5 looks like a genuine full range, end game product that people like me(never considered magico$$$) can actually get excited about.

My journey was Devore Nines...then had to add a sub (JL) because I needed more bass. Then I got tired of the sub, and found the Devores too "shouty," and got the A3's. There is plenty (a ton) of bass from these A3's in my (rather alive) room. I could not imagine wanting a sub in my environment; the bass really is fantastic. For our room (the tweeters are 113" on the laser measure from where I sit), I think that the A5's would be too much (just as the Devore X's were when I brought them home to try). I have S3Mk2 and M2 envy, not A5 envy
