Darrell - I’ll go in tomorrow and listen longer, but first impressions: if Magico made an S4, this would be it. It has such weight and bass weight. Mids and highs are fabulous. Gotta say, for a $20k ish speaker, this will set a whole new benchmark in performance. Maybe a little too good.

Sounds like these are better than the S5 MK II. Too bad you can’t get them in different colors like the S series.

I could live with the A-chassis look, but the cf on my M3's is a look that can't be beaten. The A5 price is very reasonable for the level of performance it brings to the party.

Bud, not better than S5 Mk2. I would say the S series still has some nice advantages with cabinet shape/construction, color options, etc.

However, these new A5’s would eclipse the Q3/5 for me. They have that S/M DNA and performance.

That being said, they are still not close to any of the M speakers (and that’s a good thing - phew!)

Frankly, unless your room was really small, I couldn’t see anyone picking an S1 over an A5. S3 because a tougher choice: cabinet on S3 is better, color options, etc.

But this A5 is scary good. At ~$20K, very hard to beat IMO.

I’m breaking them in with the Boulder 2160/1110 combo and the MSB Discrete DAC.

    Re: Magico A5’s Arrive!!!!

I listened to these for several hours today. The midrange is very special. The bass is tight, balanced full and articulate. Despite not having a curved front baffle, the speakers still do a great disappearing act and the image height is perfect. They fill our 17 x 25 room with ease and play loud without any breakup. The speakers also convey a great sense of emotion from the music.

Do the Magico A5’s redefine the $20k speaker market? I would say yes and those speakers costing much more better be worried too.

I’ll let these continue to break in and give another report next week. But for now: WOW! A Home Run.

Thanks for the report and videos Mike. My A3s took several hundred hours to really show their sound characteristics. Hearing the A3s right from the start I was impressed to say the least. I thinks these will do the same.

    Re: Magico A5’s Arrive!!!!

    Thank you very much Mike
Beautiful speaker from a great company
Definitely a new competitor in scene

As an S3 MK II owner, beside your mention in previous posts,
do you have a pair in your place to make a comparison?
Until now, I think the S3 was the “sweet spot” in the Magico line
    by price and performance.
Now, there is a new one...

    Re: Magico A5’s Arrive!!!!

I need to shut myself down from any further reading about the A5's. At 1/4 of the price of my M3's the A5's might be getting too close for comfort. Certainly on the price vs performance curve.

Don’t think that for a second. M2/M3 are in another league. But damn this A5 is good.

We're pretty happy with the A-chassis look. (We've had A3's since they first came out.) Sure the S's and M's are beautiful, but they did a really nice job, within the budget, with the A's. Given the significant price difference, the A's are nice enough. And honestly they are nice in their own right, IMHO.

Mike - after you've had a listen, how do they compare to S3Mk2? Our A3's fill our room with sound, and I'm pretty sure A5's would be too much speaker for the space. How do you characterize S3Mk2 between those two A's?

I quite like the look of the A5. imo better than the round arse of the S3/S5/S7.

Then again I love the more industrial look of the Q5 over the M6.

Yes to industrial. But small design touches that add thoughtfulness and elegance. The grills are really lovely, and I keep them on in part because I like the look!

I will let you know. The S3 mk2’s are a bit taller, with the sculpted look. I have a hunch the A5 may have some more bass weight, but the S3 mk2’s might have some refinement benefits. Right now I’m breaking in the A5’s. I go and listen each day and they are really opening up. They don’t get flustered at all when pushed. I played Hugh Masakela Stimela and loud and they didn’t break up at all.

The cabinet construction, shape and material of the M series, combined with the driver materials, especially the tweeter, put the M series in another league above the A series.

I listened again to the A5’s today (this time with the full NAIM stack) and they are really opening up, balancing out and shining. In the $20k space, they are amazing.

    +1
I would use similar language to compare the two in a single sentence. The A5 doesn't erase the difference in sound character.

Well, one is brand new, the other is now discontinued. I owned the Salon 2’s - twice. Great speaker. Needed stupid amounts of power (“start at 750 watts/channel and go from there” - Kevin V.) and subs to really shine. I remember when I got my first pair, I thought the drivers were broken. There was NO BASS. They definitely need some subs or LOTS of power to get the bass going. Good speaker though. Studio 2 as well.

But the technology in the A5 is quite something. The way they were sounding today really blew me away. Curious to see how they change with another 100 hours or so.

Quick update on the A5’s. I moved them into a different room to use a cooler running amp and to test them in a smaller room and with the NAIM stack. They are really beginning to shine after 72 hours. The bass is more defined, the speakers are really opening up. Things are smoothing out and balancing out and opening up.

This is even more of a winner than I originally thought. Big sound. Deep bass. Disappearing act. A home run.

I can't help but think they're shooting themselves in the foot a bit here by building such a good A-speaker, which probably carries a lower profit margin, eating into sales of the higher grade series speakers.
