Re: miles davis: birth of the cool

I set my dvr to record the two hour show. But, I was able to find it on OnDemand and started watching it last night. Definately a must watch show. I never knew how he got his raspy voice until now. It took me a long time to appreciate Miles Davis music. I think I was just too much a kid of the sixties. And as was pointed out from people interviewed. He either accepted you or not. And if you were in the "not" you were in the never. He was a very complicated and creative person in his time. I may need to watch this a few times.

I think I'll listen to "Kind of Blue" again today.

Darrel, I’m looking forward to seeing this as well, and the same with me in regards to taking a long time to be appreciative.

Kind of Blue is fantastic, just listening to this yesterday

The movie is available on Netflix. Just watched it last night. Really informative and well done movie. A complicated character no doubt but definitely a musical genius. Miles career spanned so many periods. He was playing with established bands since he was a teenager!

A bit off topic, but this interview by Rick Beato (great interview BTW) with Robben Ford, Robben talks about Miles mostly toward the end etc.. Really good regardless

His autobiography is even more illuminating. His marriage to Cicely Tyson was particularly rocky.

Thanks for the PBS link, that was great. I had no idea of much of the intricacies of him and his personality.

Re: miles davis: birth of the cool

Great flick. Here's my take after watching: tragic guy, with all of his genius and success, and the riches that were derived from it, he led a fairly tumultuous and tragic life. The fact that he never seemed content drove his artistic talents to new heights and led him to establish and innovate new sub-genres within jazz, from bebop to modal to blues, to electric jazz, to jazz and acid rock, etc., but his personal life and relationships were relegated to and prioritized far behind his artistic endeavors, always taking a back seat and as a consequence, he was often miserable, drug-addicted and quite abusive to people, including his loved ones. Really a tragedy, but this seems to be a path which many artistic geniuses took.
