Post Re: Magnepan owners, please tell me what you have and amplifier(s) you use ...

    I use the following equipment:
    Magnepan 3.7i speakers
Mit and Silver speaker Cable (Moving to Audiance FrontRow)
    Classe CA2200
    Audio Envy Balanced interconnects
    Cocktailaudio X45Pro

While I have a Classe Preamp, I have removed it from the system in favor of going directly from the X45Pro to the amp.
I have audiophile friends who are amazed with the simplicity and flexibility of the system. I purchased the X45Pro online - it is somewhat difficult to find an American dealer.

I am glad to answer questions for anyone who wishes to reach out.

A friend has same amplifier and search to change it. He has Magnepan 3.7.
    I don't know why.
    I think it's a bad idea.

Re: Magnepan owners, please tell me what you have and amplifier(s) you use ...

I have an preamplifier Jeff Rowland and an amplifier Jeff Rowland with Magnepan 3.7i.
After connected Hijiri Nagomi power cable on preamplifier and Furutech Nanoflux NCF on my amplifier, I don't recognise my system. I win on dynamic and tonal voice.
They are very expensive but you can hear the difference without doubt .
So , because I have very poor DIY power cable on all my sources, I will change them piece by piece.

If you can find a used Bryston SST2 amp, any of them should drive your Maggies beautifully.

A pair of 28SST2 amps and a Maggie 20.7’s would be up there on my crazy good value high end system list.

I owned 5 pairs of Maggies and drove them with everything from Carver to McIntosh to Bryston to Pass to Classe and many in between.

Thanks, but I am very surprised.
I have listened Dan Agostino times to times in demonstration in many shows and I have found them without life, but I never listened them with Magnepan.

I think the Pass Labs X Series (Class AB) and more powerful (at least 100 watts) Pass XA Series (Class A) sound wonderful with the bigger Maggie’s (3.7i, 20.7 and 30.7).

I think the MBL amp that I purchased pre-owned is about as good as I have heard with my little Maggie's.

I own the Bob Carver 350 Raven amps. They are rated at 350 RMS at 8 ohms and 400 at 4 ohms.
Will these be ok to use driving either the 3.7i or the 20.7 ?

    Thank you,

I can now comfortably comment in this thread since I have "worthy" amps powering my 1.7i's...

And that would be a mint pair of Odyssey Audio Stratos monoblock amps. A huge upgrade in every way over the Emotiva XPA-2 Gen 2 I was using.

I am concerned since they are tube amps and may not have enough of the right type of power for Planar speakers.

Re: Magnepan owners, please tell me what you have and amplifier(s) you use ...

Great setup, I had the 1.7i and 1.7 20.1 etc.. I just have had too many speakers in my house, got rid of Magnepan and then went into a store about 8 months ago, and heard the LRS+ easier speaker to move around and I was shocked on how good this sounded! One word for me: "Astonishing" I hooked them up to everything I have Luxman 509X, some Musical Fidelity Monoblocs, and Belles Monoblocs and even the Belles Aria. Heck last night I hooked them up to a second system Int. Amp a Mission 778x and was shocked on how good they sounded. I also own Sonus Faber Serafino's, Dynaudio's C2 Platinum's along with some Joseph Audio speakers. Still shock and almost mystified on how good these sound.DSC_2790.JPG

I own a pair of 1.6's and power them with a Pass Labs X250. I was using a Parasound A21 which sounded ok. The Pass took it to another level even though then A21 had better specs for the most part. I keep thinking about upgrading to an X250.8 but I enjoy what I have currently.

Re: Magnepan owners, please tell me what you have and amplifier(s) you use ...

I have Magnepan LRS+ I am using Bryston 14B-3 I haven't really stretched my legs yet. Also have 2 REL 7x subs to round out the bass. Initially sounding very good. Lot's of tweaking to do. Sound is a bit bouncy. The room needs some correcting along the rear wall. (Not coming very soon. I was surprised how pricey this can be.) And it has to be nice looking. Don't have to worry about the wife factor. Hell, I want it nice also. Nonetheless, the LRS+ and Bryston combo is as advertised--pretty good.

I fell upon a long YouTube review from Absolute Sound. Previous to this was a Hegel H390 (selling now). This was not exactly bad, but it did not make me stay up to play music. It seemed to be missing that last 10% of something. I was thinking this Bryston could be a final chapter kind of piece. Not sure. Maybe that last 10% is going to come from a new stove--otherwise know as Pass Labs?? Have even seriously considered Starkrimson. I had Peachtree GaN and it actually sounded EXTREMLY clean.

I'm looking for that "oh my god!" sound. Emotional, smooth, sweet and still great clarity. I'm almost there.

I don't know how my custom Stratos monos would compare to your 14B-3, but I can honestly say these amps are no slouch at all and my gear hunt is pretty much over. If you're looking for emotional, smooth and sweet with great clarity and extreme grip and control on those Maggie panels, these amps just might be the ticket for you.

Before I purchased these, I was getting pretty close to pulling the trigger on either a Bryston 4B Cubed or Pass Labs X150.8. Then these came along, and you see what happened.

Re: Magnepan owners, please tell me what you have and amplifier(s) you use ...

I would encourage you to try the Starkrimson amp. I recently had it in my home system for 2 weeks and I was extremely impressed with how black the background was and how clear, clean, transparent, detailed and musical it was. Impressive at any price. Only the second solid state amp I felt I could happily live with.

The most significant caveat to the above is that the amp will immediately tell you about any colorations in the equipment and cables upstream of it. You might be confused thinking those colorations are from the amp. So consider that you may need to fine tune the rest of your system. But the Starkrimson is a superb amp, and that is coming from a life-long tube guy. Still thinking I may buy one!
