Your favorite Jazz musician on specific instrument?

I thought of this while listening to some Scott Hamilton tracks and thinking, Scott is by far my favorite sax player. I've loved everything I've picked up by him. So far well recorded as well.

    Vibes, Milt Jackson

Trumpet, Clark Terry with Roy Hargrove runner up. Jim Manley is very overlooked IMO

Bass gets a bit difficult for me, I thought maybe separating electric & acoustic, but, Stanley Clark is probably my #1 and does both stellar. Acoustic is Christain McBride with a very close Ray Brown runner up. Marcus Miller, Victor Wooten I'm sure will come up but although virtuoso their music don't keep my attention the same.

Piano is another difficult choice for me, I'd say Gene Harris but Oscar Peterson....... flip a coin. Runner up is Michel Petrocini

I really have not heard much actual Jazz guitar I like. I have to fringe over to Fusion where Al Dimeola has no equal in my book.

Drums, no one particular comes to mind. There was a drummer who plays with Ray Brown who did a live solo and broke out into some John Bonham kind of stuff with using his hands etc he is great but I forget his name. Who knows maybe he's the one who inspired Bonham.

I thought you guys might find this fun and we'd perhaps learn some other musicians to check out. Also, get an idea of our taste.

Re: Your favorite Jazz musician on specific instrument?

Tough on for me Bryan. I lean more towards Jazz Fusion and good Smooth Jazz. I would be hard pressed to pick only one from any category but I can list those I like in each easier.

Horn - Rick Braun, Eric Marienthal,
Drums - Dave Wekl, Bruford, Cobham, Dennis Chambers, Collins, Danny Gotlieb, Chad Smith,
Guitar - Lee Rittenour, Russ Freeman, Mike Stern, Craig Chaquico, Jeff Kollman,
Bass - Jeff Berlin, Ralph Armstrong, Wooten, Clarke, Marcus Miller, Mark Egan, Claypool
Keys - Dave Grusin, David Benoit, Lyle Mays

This is a short 5 minute list for starters
    -----------------
    Brian

    Main System -
    Rotel RCD-1572 / Rega P3 > Luxman 505UX Mark II > Fyne Audio F502SPs > Synergistic Cables

Secondary - OPPO 93 > VAC CLA 1 MKII Pre > Odyssey Stratos > Dynaudio Audience 82s > Tara Labs Cables

OMG, I can't believe I forgot Billy Cobham, I'm a big fan. I have Spectrum with him and Tommy Bolin on LP. Jan Hammer as well. I'm a big fan of Hammer, followed him on Beck's, Wired, a few albums with Dimeola.

I also have some Rick Braun.

I'm a huge Scott Hamilton fan too.

I'm wondering if you also know of his album Radio City.

Sorry, it's Scott LaFaro, the great young bassist for Bill Evans. Died way too young at age 25 in a auto accident a few days after appearing with Stan Getz at Newport.

I had the opportunity to listen to Shenel Johns last night - spending a few weeks in the land downunder from New York. THE MOST amazing female vocalist I have ever listened to. If she comes to a city near you - get tickets ASAP. You will not be disappointed. I'm not a a big Jazz fan & she transitions seamlessly from Jazz to Blues to Gospel she IS AMAZING. Her interpretation of Bang Bang (I Shot You Down) & Wade on the Water were mind blowing. A MUST see & hear.
