Luxman da-250
I have a M-700u amp. I am considering adding a Da-250 dac to this and use the built in volume control without adding a pre-amp. Will the combo. sound good or should I consider a separate analog preamp? My understanding is that the Da-250 has the LECUA volume control which is considered very good. Alternatively I can add a CL38uc preamplifier and the Da-250.
Cheers,
Sid

Re: Luxman da-250
In very few cases I’ve always preferred a preamp in the chain. You can certainly get the dac installed and use it directly to your amp, adding a preamp at a later date.
For me, dac direct is more detailed, more neutral and more “truthful”. I prefer the colorations that a good preamp gives.Fleetwood Deville by Oswald Mills Audio, Vienna Acoustics Haydn Jubilee, Wharfedale Linton w/ stands, Klipsch RB-75, Klipsch RP-160M.

Re: Luxman da-250
Thanks Joe, that is what has been my experience as well. I have always preferred a pre-amp in most cases . Perhaps I will first consider the CL38uc and then plan for a DAC. Also I noticed that DAC depreciation is quite high (being a digital component), so I can perhaps pick up a used one at a good price.

Re: Luxman da-250
I got the Cl-38uc preamplifier. It matches very well to the the M700U - great synergy. I am searching for a DAC now, using a cheap and cheerful topping d50s for the time being.
Cheers,
Sid

A DAC that would fit in with that combo would be a used Aqua La Voce S3.

I upgraded the power supply on my Gigafoil v4 to a Weiss PSU 102. It’s very nice step up. But with the new model, you’re looking at $2000 before even investing in a SOTA linear power supply.
