Should I turn my XP-22 off when not being used

Before the XP-22 I had an XP-20. The 20 didn’t have a power switch, so it was on all the time. A couple of years ago I upgraded to the XP-22, and it does have a power switch. After getting it I have left it powered on all the time. A few months ago it developed a problem, but is now repaired and working fine. However, I wonder if I had powered it off when not being used if it wouldn’t have broke. I listen to my stereo on Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday nights, but the pre is on all the time.

As an experiment, I am going to start turning it off when shutting down Wednesday morning, and Sunday morning. Unless someone can make a good point about leaving it on 7/24. Thanks.

Re: Should I turn my XP-22 off when not being used

Any Pass preamp I’ve owned never had a power switch and was always on. They definitely sounded better after being on for a few days.

I’m surprised the new preamp has an on/off switch. I’d be curious if there’s part of it that’s powered up all the time and the switch activates the output or similar.

You definitely need to let us know if you notice any sound differences from powering it up after a few days. Does your manual mention anything about it?

When in doubt, call Pass Labs (Kent English).

    Bud,

As long as the preamp gets adequate ventilation, I would not worry about leaving it on. Unless you knew for sure what went wrong, I suspect it’s coincidental that there was a problem. Best thing is Pass has superb customer service. They don’t nitpick the customer. I’ve never heard of them abusing a customer, only excellent care.

Re: Should I turn my XP-22 off when not being used

I turned it off when I went to bed this morning, and will turn it on Tuesday morning. Tuesday night I will find out how it sounds. However, after thinking about this some more I think after Tuesday I will go back to leaving it on all the time. It doesn't get hot, and can't be using much electricity when it's idle.

Re: Should I turn my XP-22 off when not being used

Obviously, the best idea is to ask Pass Labs. That said, when I spoke to one of the Pass Labs folks (I don't remember who), they said that any time my XP-30 is unplugged (turned off) it would take 3 full days of being powered on before it would sound its best again. I doubt it would be any different for the XP-22. I believe that someone from Pass labs wrote that the reason that they added a power switch was to meet some government requirement, not because they wanted to...

It is Tuesday night, and the pre has been since 9:30 AM (11 hours). While it sounds okay, I think it is not as dynamic or full as before. Maybe that’s just me, but I am leaving it on all the time from now on. So much for that experiment.
