    Suncoast Audio welcomes Aqua DAC’s

I’ve been hearing and loving the Aqua DAC’s for a few years now at shows. Aqua reached out to me shortly after they let go their US Distributor and now handle things direct with dealers. My friend Mark Jones (Audio by Mark Jones) has been raving about the Aqua DAC’s to me for years. Their lineup of sub-$10k DAC’s fits nicely into my profile continuing on the sonic benefits of R2R ladders DAC’s like MSB.

This La Scala at $7700 is absolutely jaw dropping incredible.

I’m just breaking it in this week, so I know the Lumin shouldn’t be on top of it!

    It uses 12AT7 tubes.

For first impressions, all I can say is holy shit WOW!!!!!

Congrats on the new pickup Mike. Great DAC's for sure. I've owned a La Voce for over three years. Mine just returned from Italy with the S3 upgrade in June and it really took it to another level.

wow! looks like a great line-up of DACs

anyone have more info on whether these DACs have ethernet network connectivity... looks like they have two proprietary network inputs: AQlink and LinQ

AQlink -- "etherCON RJ45 (AQlink) input connection, employs CAT6 cable can connect both RJ45 and professional etherCON RJ45"

LinQ -- "modular network interface" -- more info here

both might be I2S but hard to tell from the website description.

    A little more info:

“As always for the new projects, in the development of the new LinQ, aqua R&D has set itself as a priority the achievement of the best possible sound quality.

LinQ is a highly modular device, based on a series of completely independent units.
Each module performs a particular function, for which it is optimized.
We will then have a ROON bridge module, a DLNA streaming module etc.

Each module has its own dedicated power supply and plugs into a connector on the base board of the device. In addition to the optimization on the particular function, this architecture guarantees an exceptional possibility of future upgrades.

The communication lines of each module with the network are galvanically isolated. Note that further isolation is guaranteed by the fact that one of the modules is a LAN switch, developed internally by aqua. This is an important point: in fact, during the listening tests, and also in the laboratory ones, we obtained the best results with the use of this architecture with built-in LAN switch.

Always having the sound result as an objective, LinQ does not use a USB interface: the output is on AQLink, the aqua I2S proprietary connection. In this way the "passage" on USB is skipped, avoid any losses in sound quality.

Another very important aspect: various network interfaces and streamers on the market - even high-end models - are built on the basis of a standard Linux distribution, originally developed for the PC and tablet market.
The processor is therefore often overloaded, resulting in low response to user commands, long waiting times at ignition and in general in sub-optimal performance.

For the LinQ, aqua developed - an extremely streamlined and fast system, focused on audio playback functions.
This has required a considerable effort in terms of time and resources, but the result is immediately evident on first use.

Ultimately, aqua believes that the LinQ network interface represents a high performance and innovative device, open to future market evolutions, and above all with exceptional sonic qualities.

The first pre-production units should be ready in 2 months and the list price will be around $ 5K USD.

    And we are very exited.

Also, we are now evaluating to introduce a simpler "Network AQlink Gateway" device, developed on the basis of the same know-how, and designed to be connected to our DACs. This device will have of course a lower price than the LinQ, and cost-sensitive (around of $ 1800 USD), we think to many owners of La Voce S3.”

So if you already have a streamer, like Aurender or Lumin with no DAC, you would need an adaptor of some sort to use an Aqua DAC?

With the new analog board (for formula xHD), the performance is elevated.

Had an S2 and really enjoyed it. I liked the option of changing DAC modules for different flavors. Does the S3 and La Scala have this option?

I have a friend that loves his original Aqua La Voce. He went through a PSA Direct Stream, Yggdrasil, Metrum Hex and a few others before settling on the Aqua DAC. He loves the very analog sound of the DAC.

Yes. The La Scala has really evolved sonically since a week ago. It has pretty much run non-stop. The tubes in the La Scala create a big soundstage with a more vocals up front soundstage. It has retained its excellent instrument separation and bass has improved. The engaging nature of the DAC comes out in spades. This is a very musical, engaging DAC and not a Hi-Fi DAC like an Esoteric K-01 for example.

Nice find Mike. This is where an experience audio dealer bring "value engineering" to the table. Outstanding sound for $7,700 and from what I gather punches way above its class. Very nice.

Still going strong. We used the Aqua La Scala at the Florida Audio Expo with the Fyne 702’s and had great sound. The Aqua La Scala is more romantic sounding than the other two due to the tubes. Under $10K, it’s easily one of my favorites. Very musical.

Any thoughts on the Aqua Formula?

The new Aqua Linq is quite interesting - seems to be a form of “network bridge” that can feed i2s signals to Aqua DACs.

It’s similar in sound to the Luxman D-08u. Very analog. It’s not anywhere near at the level of the Select II which does everything - tone, bass, 3D, analog, organic, rich, engaging, detail, transparency, the whole enchilada.

I’m not a fan of DCS, so not going to comment, other than to say that DCS is the number one brand traded in for MSB. There are many here who have moved from the Vivaldi to MSB and they’ve made many comments about how happy they are with the change.

lots of folks here have 2 or more turntables... so for variety, why not 2 DACs?

the la scala mk2 is so different than the t+a that it might be a good compliment offering a quite different sound. anyway, this is the thought that keeps circulating in the mix for me.

for the price of a perfectly nice house in some locations, i would hope the select-ii would also simonize my car.

Re: Suncoast Audio welcomes Aqua DAC’s

Any thoughts on how well the Aqua Formula xHD would pair with Antipodes K50 music server. Does it need to pair with the LinQ on the i2s input to optimize its sound. This Dac is on the top of my list to replace the Meridian Ultra Dac. The K50 is best utilizing its digital outputs as it has an internal clock. I use the AES/EBU to my DAC.

I bet it would sound great. It doesn’t need the LinQ to sound best, but that is certainly the path Aqua recommends. We use it consistently with the Aurender and Lumin U1.

IMO and IME the LinQ is highly under rated. I purchased an Innuos Statement in the hopes of replacing my DIY server (dual linear PSUs, high quality cables, SSDs, highly SW optimized w/HQPlayer + JCAT top nic) and a LinQ. However, and somewhat to my surprise, my setup was simply better in all parameters (clarity, sense of air / space, spacial cue definition, microdynamics, etc.). The only perceived benefit I could muster was a small amount of extra low frequency energy, however, it was coupled with looser and less defined bass. Net - The LinQ does an amazing job of taking a PC's output and transforming it into clean unadulterated bits to a DAC. I surmise a matching Formula (like I have) is even better via I2S versus USB, etc.
