    Unexpected Power Outage

We live in an area with an extreme amount of growth. This has started to cause unexpected number of power dropouts where the lights might flicker and go out for maybe a second possibly a bit more.
The only equipment I leave on is my laptop, DAC and NAS. My main concern is the NAS with 5 drives running.

I realize clean power is important but would you be concerned enough about power dropouts to the running drives to put a power backup on it. It seems hard drives shutting down and starting up a moment later possibly 3 times in a row can't be good for them.

Other than building my own power plant or moving -not probable- what would you do? Having a cold start on DAC and NAS doesn't make for a lovely sound for the system.

    Re: Unexpected Power Outage

Jack is absolutely right, I use 1400 va backup units on everything computer, especially my nas. Losing power on a nas can mean disaster. Some backup units can automatically shutdown the nas or computer if the battery gets low.

Another option is Cyberpower in the same price range. I think Dan just bought one a few months back.

I experienced a series of blackouts in a row. My NAS got corrupted and it took five days for it to repair itself. During that time I had no access to any files stored in the NAS. Moreover, during that time I did not know if I was EVER going to get my files at all.

The lessons that I learned are:
    1. Keep a copy of your NAS files somewhere. The cloud, external drive, whatever, and
    2. Get a UPS for your NAS.

    Re: Unexpected Power Outage

Brad, I use an APC ES 350 battery backup with my NAS. It's an older model, and doesn't include automatic shutdown, but will power the NAS for at least 10 mins. I also have a natural gas whole house backup generator which automatically kicks in if extended power outage, so the NAS never loses power. Can never take too many precautions with all our electrical storms!

I assume you mean not on your property. It is the power company’s responsibility to keep the lines vegetation free. Have you asked them why they aren’t?

    Re: Unexpected Power Outage

Brad.......I use uniterruptible power supplies on both of my sounds systems with hard drive base music servers. In the studio system I power the system with a Pure Power 2000 AC regenerator with battery backup. In the living room system I power the Aurender N100H and the Yggdrasil DAC with a APC SMC1000-2U backup power supply. Here's a link to when I installed the APC backup in the living room system. A backup power supply is a small price to pay to the peace of mind when it comes to maintaining constant power to music server hard drives.

    Re: Unexpected Power Outage

Thanks to all of you for providing support for the answer I was hoping for.

This morning I have an APC backing up my NAS. It has an ethernet connection to the Synology to shut it down before the power runs out.

We do have a 22kw generator but it only handles one of the two 200 amp panels. My music room is not on that panel as I never figured I would be turning on my electronics via generator.

After the last hurricane we realized how many friends and family will be taking shelter with us and are going to add another generator for the other panel this summer. At this time our new master bedroom is the only one without A.C., go figure.
