    Crazy Sound Effects

I am not much of a Madonna fan though there are a handful of her tracks that I like to listen to. One of the tracks I never cared much for (actually disliked) was "Vogue". I still don't really like it but I must say the version I listened to off her "Immaculate Collection" has some of the craziest "surround" effects I have come across.

At the very beginning her voice goes from left of my seating position to right front corner. Sound effects follow in those locations before the bass kicks in centered directly between my speakers. When her vocals return it bounces all over the place. I would swear I was listening to a surround set-up.

I have played the Tidal version via Roon.

    Re: Crazy Sound Effects

The track was recorded with a device built by Hughes corp. I can't remember the name, it may be Q as MEP says. I remember reading about it back when the song was popular. I'm not sure why it wasn't used more widely, it is a cool effect.

Along those lines, listen to the Beach Boys, In My Room, stereo, it sounds to me like the singers of the chorus are line up more along my wall, on left and right. I wonder how they got that effect.

    Re: Crazy Sound Effects

Vogue was recorded with SRS, too many hits to find the article how Vogue was recorded with it, maybe in some liner notes if anyone has a CD or LP. I know I read it though back when.

Q-audio seems to be something you can use on YouTube but I didn't research it much. That Hughes thing was driving me crazy

I should add, the SRS was used in the recording studio, anyone should be able to hear the effect no matter the lossless format.

Madonna as mentioned, Sting’s, The Soul Cages, Roger Waters, Amazed to Death and a few others recorded with Q Sound. The process tricks your ears by using timing, and amplitude. I think it is pretty cool method, and wonder why it never ready caught on.

    Re: Crazy Sound Effects

Yeah, Wiki shows Q-Sound is what was used on the Immaculate Collection, amongst others. I stand corrected. However, I did read the article that connected the Hughes SRS. I'm wondering when all the tech was sold if any of the guys in Q-Sounds got some of it. The Wiki article on Q wasn't very long. Both legs went on to bigger things. SRS Labs was under DTS, then absorbed.
