    Looking for a networking streamer

Hi, I'm looking for suggestions for a device that accepts ethernet, acts as a Roon endpoint and outputs AES/XLR.

Of course, I'd like the best one that doesn't cost the same as an automobile.

I currently use a Vivaldi Upsampler but given that I don't use the 'upsampler' part of it, it's overkill for my needs (although it sounds amazing...)

    Thanks in advance!

The Aurender W20 outputs dual AES/EBU, the Lumin U1 outputs AES/EBU and is a Roon endpoint.

I second the M1SE Bricasti. It’s a monster for the price. Network card sounds a lot better than USB too! You also have a very good pre section built in and can sell your pre - it’s better than most preamps up to 5 figures or better.

You don’t mention how much you want to spend.

The Oppo 205 will do all that. They have been discontinued and the price has gone up. Probably several thousand dollars now.

I also own a Logitech Transporter that does all that as well. Less than 1k.

If you are DCS Vivaldi owner; wouldn't the DCS Network Bridge be the natural choice? Dual AES out and its a Roon endpoint.

If you are going to keep the DCS DAC I would look at the Lumin U1 first plus another member has a less than a year old one for sale in the "Market" for a great price so you can try it and if not your thing sell it at little to no loss.

Or take that money you would put toward a streamer and use that and trade the DCS for an MSB with the Ethernet Roon Renderer module.

Don’t know if APL are in the US. This looks interesting, streamer/Roon endpoint with AES output.

Re: Looking for a networking streamer

Of course if you want something on the cheapish side try the Bricasti M5. Roon endpoint with AES output. My brother tried it and said it’s very good for the money. He’s going to get one. There are a couple of reviews online.

But it’s not quite as good as the dCS network bridge according to the review.

Re: Looking for a networking streamer

I appreciate all the replies, guys. The offer I have for my Vivaldi is 9k and it seems like I'd have to spend a good chunk of that to replace its network functionality and apparently even the DCS Network Bridge isn't quite as good so I guess I'll just hang on to it.

    Hi Ian,

Even if you do the base Reference DAC with the Renderer input module, you will be blown away. You can add the upgraded clock and powerbases over time.

    Best,

I don't doubt that. I was going to go for the Premier (one model up from the bottom) and hope to trade up afterwards to the Reference (especially since the renderer module would still work) but even the Premier is over 20k and after a big loss selling my CJ GAT2 I don't have that luxury. The high end resale market is terrible these days.

Re: Looking for a networking streamer

Generally speaking, the best thing is to avoid the "generalist" products like Aurender and go with something that was designed to work with your DAC, as the generalist product will not likely be matched up as well as something from the same company.

    dCS - dCS network bridge
    Totaldac - Totaldac streamer
    Naim dacs- Naim server core
    Msb- Msb ethernet plug in
    etc.

Digital products are complex and behave in ways no one really understands. When DACs and streamaers are designed together by the same company, there is less risk for your and less of a crap shoot. YMMV!

  20. #20

Re: Looking for a networking streamer

What out of curiosity, don't you like about dCS? What makes you think MSB will be better? It's all a personal choice...many excellent products and no losers, but matching to one's taste and system synergy.

And if you go with the network bridge for your current DAC, the bridge is under $5K, you shouldn't lose more than $1000-$1500, as they are in high demand. Someone always looking for that silver bullet...

    Looking for a networking streamer

The most versatile streaming DAC I know, w/o adding several K$$ for every new connector etc, is the Brinkmann Nyquist mk2. All formats, streaming, Roon endpoint, AES/EBU. So far I’m very happy with it. Should be available at below the basic MSB Premier price.

Another one is the recently launched T+A SD 3100 HV streaming DAC (not sure it’s a Roon endpoint though, did not see the HV series on the list). Probably sets you back as much as the Nyquist. But it’s a monster, you need a good back for carrying it (approx. 30 KG).

30 KGS = 66 pounds for a streamer? I wonder what makes up all that weight.
My old streamer (a Transporter) has similar features and weighs 11 pounds in the box!

    That’s the T+A top-end High Voltage line.

All the components are similarly massive due to the aluminum casing (1 1/2” milled front plate) and massive transformer, double mains line (separate input for each channel).

Check them out, quite fun. I am currently auditioning a HV line pre, it’s very nice. Mike has the PA 3100 HV integrated in the store, I think.

It is a whole range, they all look pretty similar.

The integrated is the PA 3100 HV, the streaming DAC is the SD 3100 HV.

i almost bought your vivaldi upsampler! however, i ended up going for a metrum ambre. it's reasonably cheap as far as audio components go and i have been running it with aes out. very simple set up as well.

randomly started thinking about this again...not sure if it was mentioned earlier but if you like your vivaldi upsampler...maybe the best direction is dcs' network bridge?

    oops: it was

I have been doing some research of my own with similar requirements (accept DSD256 via ethernet, act as Roon endpoint and output analog via AES/EBU). Surprisingly (to me at least), several of the devices mentioned in this thread failed that set of requirements.
T+A MP3100HV (multi player) and SD3100HV (streaming DAC), do NOT accept DSD via ethernet (as confirmed by their own tech support to me, just days ago), which I thought was disappointing for an otherwise engineering masterpiece
Aurender does not work with Roon (I would love to be wrong on this one, so anyone using an Aurender as Roon endpoint, pls chime in)

The ONLY players I have found so far which meet my requirements under 10K$, are:
Auralic Vega G1 (someone mentioned the Aries G2 in the thread, but that does not have a DAC, nor analog out)
    Auralic Vega G2
    Lumin T2

If I have missed any, please let me know.

Re: Looking for a networking streamer

For some reason my earlier post did not make it onto the board.

I am in a similar position to the OP.
I was/am looking for a Network Streamer/Dac whicvh accepts DSD256 via ethernet, acts as a Roon endpoint and outputs analog via AES/EBU.

Based on those criteria, several of the devices listed in this thread do not qualify.

The top-shelf T+A HV components (SD 3100 HV or MP 3100 HV) do NOT accept DSD via ethernet, as confirmed directly to me by T+A tech support.

Aurender does not work with ROON (I would love to be wrong on this, so if anyone is using their Aurender as a Roon endpoint, please chime in

The Auralic Aries G1/G2 is a network streamer/bridge but not a DAC => no analog out at all.

The only devices I have found which meet the above requirements for less than $15K, are:

    - Auralic Vega G1 dac
    - Auralic Vega G2 Dac
    - Lumin T2
    - Lumin X1
    - Brinkmann Nyquist Mk2 (at the very top end of the 15K barrier, so not in serious contention for me)

If I missed any, somebody please provide feedback.

I can confirm Lumin T2 and X1 support up to DSD512 over Ethernet Roon Ready, with analog XLR / RCA outputs and digital USB / BNC-SPDIF outputs. MQA certified too - if you subscribe to Tidal or have MQA CD rips.

There is indeed very few Roon Ready analog-output network players capable of DSD256 / DSD512 playback from Roon.

Aurender is not Roon Ready, you can find their reason of not supporting Roon here:

Why not find the best sounding DAC - then adjust the feed in & out to suit.
A DAC is a major Hi Fi component - would you place the same restrictions on a Pre Amp for example - or purchase the one that sounds best to you.

Re: Looking for a networking streamer

As stated above, I am not interested in moving to USB, for a number of reasons my post did not go into (in part because I also do not want to derail the thread into a USB vs Ethernet vs SPDIF debate which has no added value). I like ethernet, so that is what I am searching for. Mr Wang from Auralic stated that Ethernet end-to-end was the best connection for my current setup config (see above) so when I upgrade I want to retain that connection/setup.
    But to each his own.

I suggest that you create your own thread (rather than borrowing an existing one) so you can get answers specific to your situation.

Thank you for the comment, however: my needs and those of the OP significantly overlap AND several of the comments provided (about T+A or Auralic Aries) provided patently incorrect information, which is why I joined the thread (to share my own research on the question and to find out what else is out there that matches my and the OP's search criteria).
So your suggestion is heard and respectfully ignored, thanks.

    Cary DMS-550
    Cary DMS-600

Both receive DSD 512 and do upsampling native PCM and DSD to DSD 256 via direct ethernet input.

These replace the discontinued Cary DMS-500, which also handles PCM and DSD in same manner. The differences between these 3 are the level of DAC chips used.

I have noted that the new Reference Series TEAC NT-505 Dual monaural USB DAC/Network Player using the latest VERITA AK4497 DAC chips used in its dual monaural circuit. This DAC/Network Player supports DSD512 and PCM32/768.
I have noted that TEAC NT-505 costs about 1/3 of the well regarded Cary DMS 600 which also using the VERITA AK4497 DAC chips.
I never heard them both and wondered if anyone did and can share their impressions.

Roon provides much more than a proprietary user interface. You can keep one synchronized library across all devices, have all Roon endpoints play synchronized music, add DSP functions, not to mention the best music database management in the business.
It is too bad that Aurender has not yet signed on with Roon.
