Here’s my take on this one. It’s a miss.

Sonically, it sounds like it was cut from digital files - despite MOFI’s claims.

The continued obsession with 45rpm causes songs to be faded out half way through so you can flip the album and totally looses the mood and the spirit of the song. Would it have killed them to do this one in 33 1/3 RPM and charge less?

On my copy, the center hole is cut off center creating inter channel modulation issues on side two of album one.

I have the MOFI SACD (2008) and it sounds EERILY similar to this one.

MOFI claims “cut from the vinyl tapes”. OK, when? 2008?

The best version - IMO - is the 2008 MOFI SACD.

    Re: MOFI Pressings

Wow, interesting findings Mike. Fremer has also questioned the quality of Mofi pressings occasionally.

Personally I also do not enjoy the 45 rpm pressings so much, as I find them inconvenient. On newer recordings there is also a tendency to pack more stuff on them, than is really available in good material.

Therefore I am a fan of the Speakers Corner re-issued cuts, they’re kept close to the original and always produced in great quality.

My tape tech is a MoFi engineer. I'll ask him about the source of the album. He may have done the transfer. I have the stereo rip from the MOFI SACD and a 15ips 2 track dub from a master tape copy. I'll have to listen to the two again, but when I compared them the tape had a richer sound than the rip.

    same here!

it seemed like they added some more boom to the presentation in a Mofi way? Think Abbey Road MFSL (boom--boom)

    Re: MOFI Pressings

I find MoFi recordings to be hit and miss. I have an old Cat Stevens Tea for the Tillerman album and a few months ago bought a MoFi copy that was supposed to be from the original master tapes and it is miss. The MoFi copy has less bass although it is tighter. It is too bright and thin sounding. It does have less background noise but the old copy sounds way better.

I'm going to borrow from a friend first to see if I'd prefer getting several of the individual, whole albums instead of the compilation.

That and I'm selling my Bardo so not sure what my analog rig will look like soon. Selling due to physical logistics, not performance. MSB ironically has allowed me to do this, but I will likely pick up a cheap Technics GR just to have the format for certain albums.

Interesting. MoFi has been known for goosing the bass on reissues.

    My most recent MoFi acquisition...

I have the original, first pressing, of this in mint condition and the two are very close, sonically. The MoFi has a bump in the bass, for sure. I think I like both equally... for different reasons.
