Mc 754
I just picked up a little MC 754 amp. As many of you know, I grew up in Binghamton and I want to have at least one Mc piece in my rack. Well this deal came up and I could not resist.
The MC 754 that I just received was described by the seller as a museum piece, looking as good now as the day it rolled out of the factory. After inspecting it and listening to it for a bit last evening I have to agree. This is what intrigued me a 20+ year old piece that looks and sounds like it came out of the factory yesterday. No marks on the chrome at all, no swirls; the paint is perfect, the connection look brand new. Even has a spare fuse module that is labeled with very old scotch tape on the little plastic bag
... There is no noise at all, absolutely silent with every control (the gain knobs are dead silent as is the impedance button for example). Plenty of power, power light is bright and true... don't know about the protection lights because I will probably never drive it at those levels 
.
Listening for a few minutes last night I can say it has the "Mc sound" compared to other Mc amps I have heard over the years and owned back in the day. I can also say that the T+A is quite a bit different in sound then the McIntosh. More open, more dynamic, a lot faster with tighter bass. But the little Mc is a very warm inviting sounding amp. Great channel separation and very musical.
So I like having the two amps in the rack... nice change of pace depending on mood

Randy.......The McIntosh MC754 is the same 100 watt per channel power amplifier that McIntosh used in their MAC4300V receiver, manufactured during the same period, 1988 - 1992. McIntosh manufactured 1599 MC754 power amps. Yours is a beautiful specimen. Last retail price was $1095.00.

Thanks Marty.... I am enjoying it... trying bi-amping with the T+A now. Sounds pretty good. The Mc has gain controls... have them set at 1.4v which is what the T+A is, so thinking/hoping it will match up. So far it appears to nicely!

I decided to remove the top cage to dust and clean inside. Had to remove the bottom to get to the screws holding the top.
Dam... I thought I needed sun glasses with how shinny to chrome under the cage was. Amazing how a unit which is almost 30 years old looks an sounds like it did when it rolled out of the factory! I hooked the Mc up today. Give the tubes a break. It is a nice sounding amp. I could live with this amp if I ever decide that I prefer not dealing with tubes, but oh those SET mono blocks are nice
