One Room Tweak = New System

One piece of furniture removed is like depressing the sport mode selection on cars with such a feature - everything opens up and performance is instantly gained.

My system has been a journey with the proverbial add this, upgrade that, change this...

While I was disciplined to laying the electrical and mechanical foundations and treatments I did not want to sacrifice my table in front of my listening position, not even try until for some reason yesterday.

I simply replaced the solid reflective table with a smaller leather ottoman and experienced an incredible, amazing leap forward - no joke!

This is my first tweak that literally cost me zero, nada, zilch...

The room is like 13’ x 25’ x 9’ with the rear half being a mini bar with fridge and round bar table for 4 (pictures are on here somewhere) - the sound back there is very good as well. (The second system in the room is the HT system, which I don’t do view all that much.)

Before (older picture, some gear, well maybe a lot has been updated)

    After (today)

Take away; don’t fear the reaper, try new things and see what comes from it.

    Enjoy Your Sound 🤺

Jim I am going to set some of my Les Pauls and PRS out in my room. The speakers will play them way better than I can.

Great gains were made with moving the table out, I knew I was losing something but did not realize that much. The guitars make no real difference to me, and I like to pick them up and play as I have for 35 years.

The room accommodates listening, socializing and spending time with family and friends.

Interestingly I got my rear handed to me on another forum for being somewhat "critical" of those who claim having a big reflective table in their listening soundfield made no difference; mind you these same people can hear the subtle differences and will debate the hell out of cables, cable lifters, grounding devices, power conditioning, power receptacles, 15 v 20 amp, dedicated power, traps, room treatments, footers, isolatin tables, type of fill for hollow legs of a Herzan table etc BUT a big reflective table, nothing.

    I am in your camp.

I will tell you musical instruments in the room can introduce resonances so be careful, no matter how gorgeous they are.

I am also a big proponent of listening chairs that are at the right height, low back, lack reclining, etc.

Now, at least to me, I really don't care what people like or don't like; enjoyment is the ultimate goal. If having a high back recliner or a coffee table enhances one's enjoyment more than the enjoyment of enhancing the sound, then it's a trade off choice the enduser has to make.

Just my opinion but I think you made the right move.

Re: One Room Tweak = New System

While I agree that moving or removing furniture pieces can make a difference to be fair the table in question was much larger than the average coffee table. From the picture appears to be more the size of the average "breakfast" table so the reduction in mass itself would cause a change. Similar effect might occur if the chair on the right was moved or removed. In my room I recently removed a large multi-seat piece of leather furniture and replaced it with a smaller single seat one and noticed a change in the balance of the room. It does all matter.

Jim.......I have two guitars in my studio sound room, each hanging on a column on either side of the room. One is a Fender American Strat, and the other is a Taylor 814ce. I solved the string ringing issue with medium soft foam strips inserted between the fret board and the strings. This completely dampens string vibration. Works like a charm and allows me to enjoy having the guitars in the room without the strings vibrating.

If anyone ever told you different, don't ever listen to a word they say. Fabric is even better, but I've haven't had a solid table there in a long time, I also have a leather ottoman currently.

I was going to saying amazing transformation of speaker looks just by swapping table...

I'll have to respectfully disagree with Jim regarding the guitars and would be happy to put that theory to test via blind/controlled method. All welcome to try. I think they are fine as is.

    cheers,

    Jim

Thanks for your input over the years and your insightful tips on getting the best sound. I know you were on the other thread regarding the coffee table and I am not looking to start it all over again.

While many of us endusers have to deal with the hand we are dealt (ie multi-use room, type and size of room, etc.) many of do have choices and many in search of the ultimate sound from their systems often have me shaking my head. In the old days I was a reseller and installer and no matter how many times I would try to help many, too many of the "many" would always insist on new equipment to fix their "woes" instead of some simple changes.

People often refuse to do simple things like just change the listening height of the their chair. My last pair of speakers were Nola Concert Grands and while Carl had the speaker slightly canted forward, the "sweet spot" based on ribbon height (for me and my size) was with my rump at 18-19". Not many chairs at that seat height but a rear end support fixed the issue an gave me much more enjoyable SQ than a standard 17" chair height.

I guess my point, and the points you drive home is everything matters and some of the smallest (and inexpensive) tweaks can often make huge differences.

    Thanks for all your input.

Re: One Room Tweak = New System

I can attest Ultrafast system sounds great, and I did not hear the guitars singing along. I did note some damping material between the fret and strings.

I like so many others have a multi purpose room. I don't want to sterile it to much. I push my coffee table to the side when listening. Otherwise I can hear it. I have looked at new furniture since I have leather furniture. My wife takes me to Lignet Roset. $20k for a sofa and chair makes me gulp.

I did the same long time ago.
At time i had problems with my wife because i gave the table to a friend for free. I had no other space in the house for the table (around 1.2 x 1.2 meters) and, after been removed, it simply could not return to the same place.

One suggestion: try, simply try to put the sub at the center, between the 2 speakers and listen music in 2.1. You have yours where i had mine (but in the right wall).
