People always trot out that excuse which means people actually believe that all reviews require payment from the OEM which is nonsense. I would love to see a response from the magazine on why they haven't had any Hegel reviews. Maybe people are still scared of fire.

Not sure what is the historic reason, but at least lately they appear to be awfully UK centric.

I wouldn't want to believe that their main advertisers (Richer Sounds/Cambridge Audio) benefit in that way. I've never seen any of their products get less than 5 stars tho.

Mark...first of all I said it was pure speculation. Secondly, anyone who doesn’t think there is a “pay to play” element/dynamic in any advertising-based business model, which the entire publication industry (digital and physical) in whatever field you like to examine is based on, is how shall we say...umm naive to be nice about it...a dumb ass to be more direct.

Now I get that you review gear for PFO and I am not saying that there is an overt linkage between the advertising side of the business and the reviewing side at most publications and many reviewers including yourself do a creditable job of putting their best unbiased assessment forward. But to deny that there is some linkage between the advertising side of the business and the reviewing aide (again not necessarily an overt one) is disingenuous and frankly insults the intelligence of your readers.

There are a number of examples of brands that could not get their equipment reviewed at one or another major audio reviewing publication once they pulled their advertising or if they just never advertised to begin with from said publication.

In any case, I admitted that my assumption was speculation in the case of Hegel and What HiFi but I did want to address the broader issue that your point implicitly seems to be denying that there is any linkage.
