    Re: Pre-Amp Shopping

Running the BHK preamp balanced into the MC402 could be awesome. It’s a Stereophile Class A rated piece and I miss mine.

I would stay separate if it were me. At $1550 for the phono board you can do a lot better like this one for less than $1400 with numerous rave reviews recently.

Thanks for the input...I didn’t realize you have the Nola’s. I had the open baffle Alon 1's and the Alon 5’s...he makes them right here on Long Island, NY. Been to his shop a few times...how do you like them?

I love them and think you would have to spend many times their price to better them. It was one of the last speakers HP reviewed before he passed. Their semi-open baffle design is what caused me to break down and try the Spatial Audio open baffle speakers. Joe is also a former long time Nola/Alon owner.

If you get a CJ you need the SE. The Caps make a big difference. There are a lot of dealer demo and used selling for very low $3K. I love my First Sound. However no remote.

    Re: Pre-Amp Shopping

I'm just approaching 150 hrs and it's starting to open...sounds much better than yesterday! A friend is bringing a Backert Rhumba 1.2 Extreme this week...very excited to hear it. I loved the standard Rhumba 1.2. Also going to roll the BAT back in at some point. It takes time...I don't like switching to much. I like to spend some time with each piece...give myself and the pre's a fair chance...

The LTA also has me very intrigued...It seems to good to believe that a $2000 pre is competing and bettering preamps costing 10-20k...blows my mind. But, whether it's correct or not...I really like the CJ

If I end up with the CJ I’ll probably go through my dealer. I know I'll pay a little more but I feel like I have to support him. He’s very good to me...he always lets me bring a few things home to compare...I can’t imagine doing this without that kind of service...

After borrowing a number of preamps this past month...I don’t think I could just buy something without hearing it in my system first. I have the ARC 28, CJ ET3 and my BAT VK-50 in the House right now...and it’s been an enlightening experience...I might just track down a 52SE. I really like the CJ, but it seems pretty hard on tubes and is a little noisy...it’s single ended, and the chassis is a little flimsy. The ARC was too tilted to the top end for my taste...it was impressive and sounded beautiful...but I found it fatiguing after a while. The BAT was very musical, sometimes not quite as polite as the CJ... but never aggressive. At my budget, I think it’s a good fit for my taste and my system...

but, I have a few more days with all three...the listening continues...

That was my impression as well, but after all the glowing reviews I thought maybe I was the problem. Nice to read someone else hearing what I heard.

    Re: Pre-Amp Shopping

I'm all behind purchasing from a dealer if they loan me the gear, or introduce me to it. I'm still considering the Classic 120 amp from CJ. I will stick with my First Sound preamp. The clarity, finesse, smooth presentation along with staggering bass sold me. It was much better than the McIntosh, Airtight or Rogue gear I had owned in the past. The only drawback is the lack of a remote. You have to get up to adjust the volume. The first sound pairs very well with CJ amps. I would assume it would do the same with McIntosh. It is only only single ended.

    Re: Pre-Amp Shopping

No Remote...that kills me...what we put up with in the name of good sound.

The C2500 is a loaner. It's one of the last preamps I can find to borrow and was interested to see how it pairs with my MC402. It's another item my dealer is helping with...he's a good, patient guy...

I've been lucky enough to borrow or hear five pre-amps in my system...the C2500 will be the sixth...after this I'll need to make a call...

I chose the Audio Note M3 Phono Balanced preamp over the ARC as well for a similar reason in the treble. And it seemed to have a slight noise. Perhaps for some added ambiance.

Perhaps the main issue is system matching. You may like one preamp in one system but in another it doesn't have anywhere shine.

One pre-amp that has absolutely staggered my perception of quality sound is the Schiit Freya, put some Tung-Sol tubes in it at least & just be amazed at the cost/enjoyment factor,... if not sell it on & loose 100-150

And it looks awesome too. For $700 there really isn't much else from what I have seen that really competes. Schitt's kind of the king of wallet friendly.

    Re: Pre-Amp Shopping

Does anyone here know if the there is a pre amp with a inbuild multibit dac? I currently own a integrated amp and a Schiit Mulitbit Gungnir. In the (far) future I might like to move to a pre/pwer combo. But I'd prefer to keep the amount of boxes the same.

So either phono amp or DAC has to be on build, both is also an option. Or even a pre-amp with streamer. That way MY Aries LE could also retire.

Anyone heard the new CJ ET-7? I have the opportunity to get one from my dealer at a very fair price...

Not sure if I should just look for a used ET-5 and pocket the balance...

looking at at internal pics...the et7 looks like a simpler design with far fewer caps...is that a good thing or just a cost cutting measure?

I would personally go with the ET7. I’ve not heard it but owned the ET5. I’m confident that CJ has learned a few things since designing the ET7. I bet the ET7 is closer to the GAT than the ET5.

    Re: Pre-Amp Shopping

If you like the CJ sound and the gain resulting in tube replacement doesn't bother you then go for it. Using 6n23's might slow down the tube usage like it does with AI preamps.

    Re: Pre-Amp Shopping

The high gain does bother me....I own dozens of classic 6922's and 6dj8's...probably a dozen 6n23‘s as well. Tearing through the classics would bother me...but at least there are some options to alter the sound. My BAT uses a dozen 6922’s...probably costs more in the end wearing down a dozen at a time. And I’m not a fan of the 6h30 sound, so those preamps are tough for me to swallow...

I agree with you completely on the 6h30 sound. My preference all things considered are for a tube preamp that uses 6SN7's but they are falling by the wayside as the old Cary group was the biggest proponent.

I have been looking at the Cary SLP-05 preamp with the "ultimate upgrade". Anyone heard this preamp and have an opinion?

It is probably just me, but if your dealer has "loaned" all of those expensive pieces to "try" in your home then you absolutely have an obligation to purchase the piece from him. Otherwise you should not have "borrowed" all of those pieces. To even mention that maybe I should buy a used one after all of this is not right, in my view. After all, he has a huge investment in all of these pieces that he has allowed you to take home, which has also probably devalued the pieces somewhat. Maybe just my view, but loaning you all of those pieces is not free for the dealer. I would consider myself lucky to actually have a dealer available to be able to look at this type of equipment, let alone "borrow" it.

I agree. And you can see in the post I planned on it. But I don’t think I’m going with anything he sells. I’ve spent many thousands with him over the years...that’s why he allows me to home trial things. But, can’t buy something I don’t love...

listening to the BHK preamp right now. Waiting to break it in before I comment...but so far I’m very impressed!

    Re: Pre-Amp Shopping

Well that is fair enough. I just remember years ago when I managed a high end stereo store and someone would come in expecting all of this, borrow equipment, etc. And then go out and try to beat our price. It was so rude and inconsiderate. There is a cost of service for sure.

It is good that you have bought many items from him in the past. Thank you for appreciating your dealers time and effort. I wish I had a dealer that I could go to, but there are none even remotely close ...

    Re: Pre-Amp Shopping

Figured I had to give a final update...I ended up with a BHK Signature Pre...

After trying many and listening for months...I found the BHK to be a very comfortable compromise. Detailed enough, full enough...just very well balanced. I'm using a SR Blue fuse and a pair of Amperex PQ White Label tubes.

It's an interesting change from the BAT 50. The BAT was more detailed but had less of a natural balance and harmonics(with 12 Siemens CCA's!). The BAT was more dynamic...the BHK has more bass and great rhythm.

There are always compromises...and this was one I was happy with...Hope this journey helps someone.

    Huge Congratulations!

I absolutely LOVE the BHK Sig. preamp. It is an absolute bargain and responds very well to tube rolling. I never felt I was giving up anything with the BHK preamp. Enjoy!

    Re: Pre-Amp Shopping

been using a bel canto pre 3 vbs [ battery supply version] recently . had to downsize system from a modwright dm . pretty good sound for this little pre , organic and musical sound with no fatigue . what a contrast to using volume controlled dac s as pre amps which bel canto seem to push . i have tried this many times but its detailed and digital and horrible , why on earth did bel canto stop making decent pre amps ? beats me
