Re: Gryphon 300 - one month later
My Gryphon is on 3 Stillpoint SS Ultra's. That is all.
I've got 4 on each speaker - they made a staggering difference in that department.

Re: Gryphon 300 - one month later
..actually I should illuminate. The amp sits on a big, heavy lump of oak kitchen work surface which I cut to size. I just wanted an excuse to buy a circular saw. This sits on the Stillpoints which sit on my wooden floor. As we all know wood vibrates. A lot. They do work but I can't comment on whether they do so with the Gryphon - I put it straight onto them and it's too damn heavy to mess with, now. But, the Vitus RI100 benefited, with SQ becoming a little better focused, defined. I don't think it was wishful thinking. As a result everything else is on sorbothane hillocks and I've just got Iso tek pucks for the TT. (All my gear sits on a wood cabinet..)

Re: Gryphon 300 - one month later
Wow - AJR, at vol 30 I'd be blowing the doors off my room. Wish my ears could still handle it, though! Incidentally I've just plugged in a new power chord made from Furutech FP-3TS20 cable. It's made an immediate difference with bigger bass and higher frequency definition/realism; players/instruments coming further into the room; noise floor has obviously dropped. (It was made from the last metre of a 5m length - the other 4m are going to replace the wire in my dedicated radial which currently sounds worse than the main house ring.) Anyway, relevant point is the Gryphon responds in a pretty obvious way to power and signal cable changes..

Re: Gryphon 300 - one month later
Does anyone have any thoughts on whether there is a point at which the Diablo should be ‘turned-down’ (or even turned off) to prevent degradation/damage? I suppose it may depend on how hard it is being asked to work? So for example, will 2 continuous hours of listening at volume 24 driving a 4ohm speaker load have any negative effect on the long term performance of it? If not, how abou 4 hours, or 6 hours? There must be SOME degradation. Just not sure what the curve looks like.

Another variable migh be volume. I turned the volume down from 24 to 18 but after 30 minutes I have not noticed a significant reduction in the heat coming off the Diablo.

Gryphon 300 - one month later
90% of the input power in class A is being disseminated as heat, not as music output. When you turn the volume up the amp is moving from Class A to Class A/B. Latter is able to leverage the power input better and thus generates less heat. As you most probably already are out of Class A in the 18-24 range there is not so much difference in heat dissemination.
Class A amplification sounds good, but is very inefficient .

Re: Gryphon 300 - one month later
Thanks Kuoppis. Answers part of my question. Let’s assume I stay in class A. How many consecutive listening hours will start to trigger increased degredation of the amp? Or maybe it doesn’t work that way. I may be barking up a non-tree here!

Re: Gryphon 300 - one month later
Thanks all. All good info.
But I have clearly not explained myself very well! I just want to know whether there is a point at which (assume operating in class A) we can ‘over use’ the amp so that the inevitable ‘usual wear and tear’ accelerates.
For example (an extreme case): would daily listening sessions of 10 consecutive hours result in more rapid degredation than daily listening sessions of 5 x 2 hours?Digital: Innuos Zenith Mk3 Server + MSB Premier DAC with Powerbase

Gryphon 300 - one month later
Ive heard Dan D'Agostino say something to this effect (from a video somewhere discussing his momentum amplifiers): Modern electrical components have a very high thermal tolerance and even though my amps get quite hot in their small chassis' it is nothing remotely close to the temperatures they were designed for.
Aside from that I would recommend turning the amplifier on and off just once per day if you plan to use it a lot. The thought is that heating and cooling cycles are "harder" on gear than extended time at high but stable temperatures. Capacitors have a lifespan that is likely shortened due to high temperatures (from what I understand they dry out) but again they are designed to operate in such environments and their degradation is also a function of time alone. I would just plan to send the unit in for recapping in 10 years in the event that you still have it. That way you don't have to feel bad about running it as often as you'd like.
These are the thoughts I went through when I had my Luxman L-590aX Class A integrated. There is that fear of "using it up" and performance degradation. I would just give it plenty of ventilation (I attached a 12v computer fan behind my rack to keep air circulating) and let it play! The degradation is essentially nil and likely inevitable, plus it makes for good justification to upgrade when the 350 comes out!

Re: Gryphon 300 - one month later
I was referring to standby. For most amplifiers that means a muted output and bias to the transistors is turned off. That allows the rest of the components to remain powered up for best sound while reducing energy waste and needless heat output.

Yea, I just couldn't see leaving a high bias amplifier on all the time, pure Class A or not.
That said it is hard to gauge what sonic penalty there is for taking it in and out of standby everyday. There are certainly those that for instance, leave there systems powered up all weekend starting Friday night and claim things keep improving right through Sunday.
Edited.

Re: Gryphon 300 - one month later
Kuoppis,
I don't think you can judge current draw and hence class of operation by the volume setting alone - depends on what the music demands at different points in time. My volume setting statement was based on musical volume levels for my music in my environment. For most classical/jazz music in my room with my speakers, settings are typically 20 - 22. Sometimes up to 24, sometimes 18 - 20 for background. I would consider most of my listening to be at moderate levels. But quiet classical passages, even at level 24, would require very little power (e.g., less than a watt).
I should also note that volume settings for the Diablo 300 range between 0 and 42. Don't recall ever having mine above 26.

Gryphon 300 - one month later
GSOphile, I agree with you. In physics the relationship between power input and performance output is typically exponential. I was just using a simplified mathematical model for the assumption. With an attenuator range of 0-42 and the same model that would mean about half the power. But as said, it is difficult to say what the exact relation is.
My Pass has also this meter indicating when the amp is leaving Class A and it only moves when I really crank it up way above my normal listening levels. That said, the Pass leaves Class A at 25 wpc.

I should qualify by saying it depends on the quality of the source... I am finding that my sweet spot is between 20 and 25 for my ‘usual’ listening levels. Up to between 27-32 when I crank it.

Re: Gryphon 300 - one month later
When I have swapped out Dacs I have found that they output at different sound levels also. So individual volume results will also depend on them.
My int-60 at clik 1 is as loud as click 8 on the Diablo this being my early morning wife still asleep sound level. For normal 80 to 88 dB levels my Int is cranked to 30-35 and the Diablo is at 20 to 25.. so no linearity that I can see.
In one of my conversations with Kent over at Pass he said the Int-60 really will not suffer from clipping because it’s volume is throttled down before you reach that point. And that even when the meter is beyond the midway point it’s more than likely still in class A. I think I read somewhere there is a setting that can be changed inside the amp if that situation is needed.
Probably why Gryphon has that programable max volume option for speaker protection.Larry

Re: Gryphon 300 - one month later
Well my Diablo’s final day of break-in is today! Using an ole Voodoo recipe which involved leaving on for 5 days straight, then 12 hours on and 12 hours unplugged with chanting ancient ritualistic mantras, dancing in rhythmic and uncontrollable fashion with a sprinkling of bat wings and unicorn hair around the said subject. At last today the final exorcism begins with Ozzie Osborne and Black Sabbath with a sacrificial offering of the high priestess of song Diana Krall.
Thanks to Mike and his formula my head will not spin around, utter vulgarities, and vomit green stomach bile all over my Magicos. I’m not even gonna go into what breaking their spell involved. You would say TMI.
After having the Diablo 120 over for a week trial it had set the bar high and I was wondering if I was making an error getting the 300. Finally in the last couple of days it has reached that level of finesse and delicacy that the 120 has at my preferred mid to low sound levels. As expected at full throttle it has more control than its younger sibling.
Life is like Budweiser.....doesn’t get any better than this!

So, am still breaking in my AudioQuest power cables. But I do have this to say so far: the Diablo is the devil. And the S3 2s are the devil’s partner in crime. It’s grip is almost impossible to escape. Toe tapping is only the start of it.

Re: Gryphon 300 - one month later
Great product! I've had mine for about eight months. One reviewer described the Gryphon sound as having "gravitas." I would agree.

Re: Gryphon 300 - one month later
Mike,
Having had the Diablo 300 and the Colosseum (using the Pandor and the MSB Select as pre-amps, right?) for a while now, how would you describe the sonic differences? Appreciate it is not like for like.
Cheers,

Re: Gryphon 300 - one month later
I know I am jumping ahead as I haven’t even received my MSB Premier but am seriously thinking of doing a double upgrade and swapping out my Diablo for the Antileon Evo. Will use the MSB pre amp function to drive it initially. Then spend a LONG time replenishing war chest for possible pre amp amd speaker upgrade. Thoughts?

Yep, the idea of something which will surpass the Diablo is very exciting! I could quite happily stick with the Diablo forever - it is amazing. But next level...

Re: Gryphon 300 - one month later
My Gryphon dealer has very kindly agreed to order in an Antileon Evo Stereo so I can demo at home against the Diablo, on the basis that if I think the improvement is big I will buy it (with a decent trade-in value for my Diablo 300). Dealer thinks it is a slam dunk and must be confident to take the risk. Delivery should be around the time my MSB Premier arrives (end July/early August cross fingers). Stay tuned...

Will be fascinating to see if the Premier can drive the AE well, otherwise I will be up for a pre-amp (2019 minimum!) as well!

Re: Gryphon 300 - one month later
FWIW: I had a good session at my mate’s place listening to his D’Agostino Progression pre amp and stereo power amp with his Sonus Faber Ill Cremonese. After about 5-6 hours of listening I felt that the sound was very ‘dry’, especially in the mid to to high range range. It surprised me as I understand that Sonus Faber generally produces quite a warm sound. My take-away was that I suspect D’Ag Progression with my Magico S3 mk2s would not be a good match. One of the reasons why I am now thinking Gryphon Antileon Evo.

This is a 12 volt LPS....is that sufficient ?....I thought one needed something like 19/20 volts, especially if doing DSP, etc.
