    Rolex

Happen to found out that Dewey is a Rolex fan, so to strike up some interest in WATCHES & CLOCKS forum, post my 3 year old only Rolex watch here.

This watch was bought in Hong Kong, courtesy of Howie, who got me a very good price back then (as against Singapore's) plus the exchange rate advantage.

Till today, although there is a larger and newer Day Date II (now an updated Day Date with different stones on the 6 & 9 o'clock dial), still think this is the elegant piece on my small wrist.

Its been one of my everyday working watch.

    Jerry,

Absolutely beautiful. I bough my first and only Rolex Stainless datejust in 1983 for $850. I'll have to take a photo this weekend and post it. I don't wear it much, maybe I should.

    Hi Joe,

My father's passing (mid March this year) taught me a few things about life, not necessarily agreeable to everyone though. Just my own philosophy.

    1. We can live but once.
    2. Be nice and kind to everyone - from friends to neighbours to love ones.
    3. Live life to the fullest as best we can - and that does not mean indulging in spending BEYOND ones limit or into some bad habits (drugs, etc, ..) What I am talking here is the passion on hobbies, food, friendship etc, ... You know what I mean ... (I am just being naggy).
    4. Be less critical and more supportive in the things we do everyday.
    5. Dont impose.

So far, I felt much happier with my family and friends while practising the above "new found" wisdom - I must be a late bloomer. Ha! Ha!

Anyway, I do love Rolexes (and watches), be it a stainless steel or platinum piece. To me, its all about good craftsmanship and who cares about keeping time accuracy down to the seconds. If that is the need, a QUARTZ watch from Seiko or Citizen or Timex would do the job. Its not about indulgence too (or showing off) but rather an exquisite taste and appreciation on the fine arts.

Hope you agree. Well, 2013 dont seem to be a year where I go looking for watches. I stopped after buying 3 for myself last year and so far, no models have caused me an itch. BUT I cant say so on the hifi side of things ...

And you are one of the nicest guys I met in forums. Really glad to have met and known you.

    Cheers!

    Re: Rolex

    Jerry,

Thank you so much. I agree with your life rules and remember your Dad's passing. I am so sorry. One thing I know for sure is that he raised a great man and I am sure he is proud of you. Your rules make so much sense, it's a wonder not everyone follows them as much as they should.

I am usually very tough on watches and invariably bang them or worse, scratch them. My titanium Casio Pathfinders are serving me well and I've whacked them pretty hard without an issue.

Jerry, the Day Date platinum is a stunning watch I hope to own one day. Love that light blue face (not so sure about the diamonds).

Rolex makes watches of the highest quality that I highly recommend - I've already bough 4 and all extremely accurate.

The Rolesium (Platinum) Yachtmaster is the only Rolex I really like. Not a big fan of Rolex design, not sure why.

I once wore the Daytona 2 for 30mins or so back in the 1990s. It was the unique prototype lent to me by the chief designer whose wife was a work colleague of mine.

Rolex has 3 huge complexes in Geneva, the Gold, Silver and Black. I used to live walking distance from the Gold (HQ) complex, now I am about 15 mins walk from the Black complex. The Black complex is very close to Patek Phillipe, Piaget and Vacheron Constantin....three of the biggest names in the business.

PS: Jerry, very nice philosophy and great way to honor your Dad.

A well bought Rolex is like a Index fund on your wrist. I have never had a moments regret. Rolex keeps raising their prices, which drags the used prices up with their own New watch increases.
I do have a respectable collection now, over the long years.

    Tip
Most Rolexes need to be wound. All my friends think they loose time, but never wind them. At least once per month. More if you do not wear it.
