    New XA25

As you are all very aware Pass Labs build amplifiers with excessive output stages, lots of heat sinking and impressively capable power supplies. They are reliable, measure well and sound great.

Nelson says the Xa-25 embodies all these attributes and less, and in Nelson-esq that really is an impressive accolade to bestow upon a product.

The lower power application allows for an elegantly simpler "singe ended" front end, with fewer parts in the signal path, improving both speed and stability. The Xa-25 is stable into very low impedance's as well as reactive loads.

The circuit operates with less feedback, deeper into class A. with enhanced thermal stability. There are no DC servos or frequency compensation anywhere in circuit; design details that are strictly in service of the listening experience.

Where the Xa-25 really deviates from our larger wattage amps is the output stage, itself. Rather than requiring many parallel devices, each channel has a single robust industrial FET rated for 700W and 40A of current. This singe device allowing for a direct couple to the speaker without any bias resistors, for the lowest possible distortion figures and the highest possible damping factor. The result is dynamic impact and contrast well beyond what the 25W rating would suggest.

In a world where great specs are often followed by dry and boring, the Xa-25 breathes new life into music. But having said that, it's metrics are pretty stunning, too.

    2 X 25 Watts Class A into 8 ohms at 0.1% THD + noise
    2 X 50 Watts Class A into 4 ohms at 0.1% THD + noise
At lower wattage output levels the figures are better still, significantly!

    Input impedance 47k-ohm
    Bandwidth DC to -3dB @ 200 kHz
    Gain 20 dB
    Damping factor 200
    Idle current 200 Watts

    Physical size approx 17" x 17" x 6"
    weight approx 55 lbs

    Projected MSRP of $4995

Looks like Nelson Pass might be breaking new ground again. I wonder if we'll see some trickle up technology into their higher end models?

Anyone have this yet or are you thinking about buying one? I'm so curious how it compares to my Accuphase A-36 (which I love dearly and have been using for the past month or so).

I'd like to get an idea of how it sounds. Might be time for a demo.

    Re: New Pass Labs XA25

I agree to me this seems kind of like Nelson is taking one of his First Watt designs and bringing it to the Pass name, Not sure if this is the case as I haven't studied the design yet. With the Audiophile community getting back into the high sensitivity speaker game an amp like this one seems to be good timing, they should sell well

    Re: New Pass Labs XA25

This looks to be almost exactly a First Watt F6 with a fancier case. Nelson has said that many times Pass Labs benefits from designs he comes up with in his personal playground (First Watt)... this looks to be the case... judging from the First Watt F6 I am listening to right now I would say this amplifier will sound amazing!

Just wanted to add that Nelson told me that the Pass XA25 and the First Watt F6 are not related and were designed separately. They are very similar is design, looks, features, and specs; therefore I do feel that performance should be similar as well however.

    Re: New Pass Labs XA25

Yea, and I would be think that they probably sound virtually identical as well. Even though the Pass was designed separately I would believe that the design perfected in the F6 was generously borrowed upon for the XA25 ...

The XA25 has only RCA inputs so maybe a PS Audio BHK pre or Conrad Johnson preamp. OMG!

    Re: New Pass Labs XA25

I agree with Joe, PS Audio or CJ... ARC would not be out of the picture either in my view... but at this point the STP-SE is working very nicely for me!

And yes, I would think that the two amps would be very similar sounding. The features, many special parts being used and talked about, specs, SE inputs, heat sink designs, power, etc., etc. are similar if not exactly the same. I also assume both are designed by Nelson and the F6 was completed and in the market first. On several occasions it has been written by Nelson and others that design developed and optimized in the First Watt line get passed on to Pass Labs. So yea, I feel that they would sound extremely similar...

By the way, here is Nelson's description of the F6 to me:

"I found that it had many of the charms of the
other amps, but a nicely soft top end that forgives a lot of the top
end artifacts you get in today’s recordings."

    New Pass Labs XA25

I had the ARC PH6 and was a bit underwhelmed. There was nothing wrong with it, it was just a bit boring. The mono setting was nice though.

That's why I am thinking Japanese or maybe again an EAR would be nice. Have not heard CJ or the BHKs though.

I have heard that ARC preamps are a little like that. I had a friend that tried one and has since moved on and said the same exact thing. Its is probably not all their products just a couple of their preamps.

I am a bit surprised to see that a Pass amp only have RCA inputs seeing that the other amps in the Pass lineup have the balanced and I can attest that the other Pass amps sound much better using the Balanced inputs as I found out with mine.

I second the PS Audio preamp as it has some great reviews and I have always like PS Audio products.

Yes! EAR (and Air Tight) make(s) great preamps.

Being that it only accepts RCA inputs does open up many more possibilities as far as preamps go especially in the tube world as most of them are only RCA outputs anyway. I would be interested in knowing how the XA25 sounds compared to the other XA amps in their lineup

    Re: New Pass Labs XA25

The more I read about and research this amp the more I am convinced that it was taken from the First Watt F6, reworked and repackaged in the Pass case. And why would Nelson not do this? He owns and designs both. The First Watt is not designed for his commercial line, but his play ground to explore new designs. Naturally what is "discovered" in his experimenting and proven as examples of excellent designs would be made available through the commercial line.

    Yes.

I tried the First Watt F-2J very nice but think a little more juice would be nice.

Stout ! Notice the lower the impedance gets the more power output - 100 watt rated at 2 ohms, I like that. Should be a prime candidate for Open Baffles / Pure Audio Project style / Spatial, etc.

    Re: New Pass Labs XA25

Reviews and measurements starting to come out. The current issue of Tone Audio has a sterling review although it isn’t listed in the TOC. Starts on page 52.
    http://www.tonepublications.com/MAGPDF/TA_086.pdf

Herb Reichert also reviewed it in the Feb 2018 Stereophile. I usually enjoy Herb’s writing, but I can’t say the review helped me understand what the XA25 sounds like. Interestingly, JA measured it and it puts out a LOT more power than claimed: 80W into 8 ohms and 130W into 4 ohms.

The Audio Beatnik also reviewed it:
    http://theaudiobeatnik.com/pass-labs...-hpa-1-preamp/

The last English review I am aware of is from Steve Guttenberg
    https://www.cnet.com/news/the-audiop...att-amplifier/

6 moons has had a preview up for quite awhile. That review ought to be available very soon.

    Re: New Pass Labs XA25

Thanks Joe! I love my VAC 200iQ amps, but I’ve been looking intermittently for 10 yrs for a solid state amp that I could live with so I could give up replacing tubes. But I’ve never found a solid state amp that even slightly tempted me to give up tubes. Still thinking that one of these days I’ll make it to Mike’s store and listen to the Gryphons on the M3s.

But the XA25 sounds promising (pun intended). It may be slightly under-powered for my room and speakers.... Hmmmmm.....Only one way to find out......

I really enjoyed the First Watt F6, which was basically the same amp. It just didn't have quite enough for the new KEF's.

This one seems to have a bit more juice though still maybe not enough for the KEF's. It's tempting though I have no complaints with the BHK. Any time frame on your Stellar amp?

Hey Jack... the F6 was very good for normal use, but didn't have any reserve with the KEF's... great sounding amp though... specs identical to the new Pass...

The new PS Audio arriving Friday.... should be fun... so most all amp flavors in rack for whatever mood ...

Still thinking of the DirectStream.... being that I am such a DSD fan... May have to talk with Ted and Paul in Chicago ....

I've had this amp paired with Avantgarde Uno XD's for several months now.The bass is tighter and more refined than SET. The mids/highs while not SET are made up for with more of everything else. It takes the AG's to another level. Highly recommend a listen.
