Ordered the M3 today !
It is all your fault. And Mike is the most guilty of all of you. He has been talking about the M3 and how great they are for weeks ... Same for Rob. Everyone has their limits. I couldn't stand that talk anymore and ordered a pair ... I think you can officialy call me a victim, lol.
Seriously though, I've been in love with the sound from the first time I've heard them. But you guys pushed me over the edge.
I should have them in a couple of weeks.
It seems I made myself a nice Christmas present !
Now back to listening to my lovely S5 mk 2 ... they are the best speakers I've had - by far. So musical.Adam

Re: Ordered the M3 today !
The S5 mk 2s are still the best sub-$40k I've heard. I'm just listening to them right now. They are just lovely. The M3s are quite a bit more.
I was was thinking how I could improve my system for some time. I was considering selling my msb M202 monos and getting the Vitus SM-011 or SM-102 monos. However, all the people I've talked to insisted going with the M3 will bring even bigger improvement.
So here I am.Adam

Re: Ordered the M3 today !
Adam,
I can totally relate to what you're saying. The same thing happened to me. Once I heard the Vandersteen 7 MkII, I fell in love with the sound so much, I had no choice but to sell my nearly new speakers and buy a pair. The good news is I've never regretted the decision and I would expect it to be the same with you.
Enjoy my friend!

Re: Ordered the M3 today !
It's a slippery slope isn't it? It's like you've got the cake, now do you want to put the icing on it? My friend is running subs with his Magico S7's & I have to admit the improvement is substantial. Then again, he has a large size room. It would be a bit more challenging integrating subs into Adam's smaller room, but doable.

Re: Ordered the M3 today !
I do not think it is too difficult to integrate subs into main speakers. I would only use sub for 30 Hz or below which many main speakers will start will roll off. Sub 20 Hz really improves presence and body. I only cross over my sub around 30 Hz and the improvement is substantial.
I do not believe M3 can go to 20 Hz flat. Add sub to M3 will help. Most of the other brands' top reference speakers are 4 towers and there are reasons for that.

Re: Ordered the M3 today !
I was pondering on using two subs for some time now. At one point, I was even considering selling the S5s (S5 mk 1 at the time) and getting the Q1s with subs.
My dealer doesn't stock Magico subs, not to mention a pair, but I can borrow any sub from Velodyne, REL or Wilson Benech (Torus) to try. That should at least give me a taste of what is possible.Adam

Adam, first off, congrats on your new speakers! Mike tells me they're something special and I hope you have many days of audio bliss!!
Second, I can't say this strongly enough, subs will make a dramatic difference even with full range speakers. Jim Smith told me this for the longest time, but I didn't understand what he meant until I added a stereo pair.

Re: Ordered the M3 today !
ok admittedly a lazy question so let me regroup and come again..
M3 is superior to S5 mk2, as reviewed. But with all this Magico numerology its difficult to keep up , is M3 superior to Q3 , Q7? is the Q series still tops or is the M-Series now tops , what differentiate all these model series , S? M? Q? ...
Regards

Re: Ordered the M3 today !
Q series is soon retired.
M series represents "newer" technology with a "cost no object" approach to SOTA speaker design, build and technology.
S/S mk2 series represents a combination of some of the trickle down from the M Pro/M3, along with some compromises where impact is minimal representing a "best value" approach. In addition to drivers, compare the cabinet structure, curved baffle front, etc. between S and M.
The tricky decision a customer may have to make is between S7 and M3. They are close in price.
In car terms, the S3 mk2 is the BMW 335i. The M3 is well...the M3!

Re: Ordered the M3 today !
My friend is, or I should say was running Wilson Torus Infrasonic generators like you. A-B comparing the sound with/without the Torus subs showed with they added presence and body as Adyc noted. Though fyi he has since re-positioned his S7's and brought them further out into the room, and now prefers the sound without the subs which is surprising. I'm looking forward to hearing his latest setup soon.

Re: Ordered the M3 today !
Adyc, I had the QSub 15's in mind, so I was thinking more in terms of space limitations...they are substantial beasts! But yes, Magico's DSP-controlled EQ offers plenty of options to integrated the subs into most listening rooms.
I agree the M3's would benefit from adding high end subs such as the QSub 15 or WB Torus Infrasonic generator. Similarly I think the S5 Mk2's would also benefit from the addition of QSub's...perhaps just a little less so than than the M3. In his review for Hifi Critic, MC noted the S5 Mk2's have exceptionally linear frequency response from about 24Hz to 35kHz, digging down to 20Hz in the sub-bass region. Though as you noted it is in the sub-20 Hz range where one can gain an improvement in presence and body.

Re: Ordered the M3 today !
How about S sub? The size is much more acceptable. Two 12" drivers per channel should be more than enough.

Re: Ordered the M3 today !
I have the Q1 and a single Wilson Benesch Torus which here in the UK cost £28.5k and £6.5k for a single unit with dedicated amplifier. By comparison the M3 costs £100k. Almost three times the price. Given the flexibility one gets with integration using a Devialet OdA amplifier (the same as the Expert Pro 1000) the M3 just does not stack up in the way it probably does in the USA particularly if used in a small UK room. Maybe when the M1 emerges ...
