Hegel launch a new CDP - the Mohican

We are told the olde CD player is dead but Hegel has just launched a new one - the Mohican, a pared down CD only player which Hegel informs us is " for people who want the best from their CD's."

The player was launched at the recent Munich show with a European price of €4,500. I'm not sure about the USD price.

That's an interesting price point for a redbook only player. I'm sure it sounds fantastic, but I wonder how it will sell?

Re: Hegel launch a new CDP - the Mohican

I confirmed that the US retail price of the Hegel Mohican is $5,000. Interesting that it is claimed to sound significantly better than their reference DAC (while limited to CDs only), with everything having been optimized for a single sampling rate.

Yes, I wondered about that too Bill. In their earlier CDP's Hegel employed up to 24bit 352kHz multilevel DACs with synchronised upsampling but here they are apparently working their best DAC in native 16 bit/44.1 kHz resolution albeit with a better clock mechanism.

Looks like Hi-Fi Plus has a review of the Hegel Mohican in their September 2016 issue.

From a demo at Hegel in Oslo. At the floor to the left a new 75 watt integrated; Röst.

Röst uses the same power amplifier technology as H360, but with lower power.
    It sounds better than H160...

Price will be around 20,000 NOK.

Anyone using the Mohican? Considering getting one.

I'm considering one myself but the longer I don't use a spinner, the more difficult it is to justify.

Yeah, and that price is a stumbling block I must admit. Read a few glowing reviews but no user reviews as yet.

I hope Hegel’s passion and gamble to design a new CDP pays off for them. It’s not the first time I’ve read reviewers observe that CDs can sound quieter, more liquid, flowing and less sterile than files played from a computer.

+ 1. Interesting that Röst chose the Magico S5's as his reference speakers which I consider to be "great all-rounders", and just plain good value .
