Wow 150K! I guess I won't be putting my poor little Cygnus up for sale any time soon towards an upgrade!
Actually Mike, Andy used aluminum for the front baffle in both the (ahem, my ) Cygnus as well as the Atria, but you are right, the Lyra is the first Aluminum Enclosure from Rockport, albeit in a constrained layer construction with an inner and outer aluminum shell with the middle layer filled with an epoxy granite co-polymer, so no ring Joe . The construction is called DAMSTIF. I think this construction is unique thus far in the high end. I can hardly wait to hear them! I've had my Cygnus for less than a week and I'm already pining for another beau.

Smart Money says that the Lyra will be there, but Rockport has not yet taken a room. Perhaps Andy will be exhibiting with Doshi electronics.

    Seriously?

From the Magico website: "MAGICO has pioneered the use of aluminum in loudspeakers design. We built our first aluminum enclosure back in 1994 and have never looked back. Extremely stiff yet easy to damp, a properly designed aluminum enclosure is the ideal platform for high-performance loudspeakers. So inert, the enclosures have no discernible coloration of their own-allowing the drivers to operate with the utmost clarity and dynamics. Though costly to implement, the use of aluminum in our enclosures plays a vital role in our design philosophy."

Me thinks there's a difference between:

    And

Actually quite seriously. 1994 is pretty late to the party.

Braun Output C was the original mid module in the original WAMM in the late 70's. The enclosure was cast just as the new Rockport is. They were hardly the first.

Aluminum is not new on any level. There were others back then as well.

As I said, what's old is new again.

Wow, didn't know that those Brauns had the aluminium enclosure. Do you know what is the exact model name ? I would buy a pair myself, just for fun.

I thought it was Goldmund, in the early 80s, who pioneered the use of aluminium in a speaker design in their Apologue model.

The original Apoogues, launched in 1988 at the Hotel Nikko in Chicago, was not aluminum. Goldmund enclosures became aluminum a little later.

In the US the speaker was called Braun Output C. There was a version with a mounting bracket as well.

    Re: Rockport Lyra

I think its worth repeating that the Lyra, to the best of my knowledge is the first aluminum - polymer layered composite enclosure, this is another method to achieve a tremendous reduction in the natural tendency of aluminum to 'ring out', the other being the heroic internal bracing employed by Magico. Which method is 'more' Heroic is up to you.

    Thanks for the info.

I believe the full name of the Braun speaker is Output Compact:

The one with the mounting bracket is C8 or L100.

I owned both, including a couple of pairs mounted on the back deck of BMWs (2002, 320i, 528i) in the 70s/early 80s. At the same time, ADS was building active car speakers with Braun drivers - the 2001 and 2002. Had both of those as well - mounted in a 66 Mustang convertible.

    And

That is right. However I don't believe Magico was the first in using aluminum housing in a high-end speaker though. As an example Piega from Switzerland is building high-end, superb quality speakers for more than 25 years.

    http://www.theabsolutesound.com/articles/swiss-jewel/

The Piega MLS2 was reviewed in the August edition of Audio magazine and ended on top just behind the Gauder Berlin RC9. I know this is just an opinion but it says something coming from a highly respected magazine.

Any further news on these? For such a significant product introduction it´s been awfully quiet since the initial August impressions.

There is a video on YouTube detailing the construction methods of the Lyra. Because I do not have 10 posts (moderators, are you freaking kidding me?!!!!!) I cannot post the link, but its on YouTube.

On a seperate note,Rockport must be increasing their production capability. I see that they are being carried in more stores than in the past (which was Goodwins pretty much).

Well,I decided on the Rockport Cygnus after auditioning many speakers at length, including the Magico S7 and YG Acoustics Sonja to name two.
To my ear, I have not heard a better speaker in the sub 100K price point.

Currently I am using the Ayre AX5 Twenty to drive the Cygnus. It punches way above it's weight class and will be hard to better.
I intend to compare it to the Gryphon Diablo 300 once it comes off the 6 month waiting list.

I´m surprised how very little info there is available on the Lyra´s sound as of now, has anyone listened to them? Is Rockport going to be showing these at Munich? No news is probably good news for Rockport since it probably means the speakers sell themselves.

Odyssey did an audition of the Rockport Lyra at a U.S. dealer. Perhaps he will comment on his impressions of the speakers.

I heard them today at the HK hifi show. They still sound like Rockports - slightly dark and smooth

Yes XV Fair comment --I've owned Rockports(Syzygy's) and concur on the sound evaluation--I drove them with Jadis Monos that alleviated 99% of that trait quite comfortably.

I did enjoy the speaker, however the Eton Drivers suffered from foam Rot as they aged-and with no original components still available I sold them.

They were a fine product though.

Further to your HKG experience can't say I'm surprised--seeing the choice of VTL's driving --those amps always give me the impression they are struggling to keep up with the music

    I'd pass on those!

I wonder what does dark sounding mean? I see reviewers sometimes use that description.

It basically means the opposite of bright sounding.

I heard the Lyras when I was in Omaha in early May for the Berkshire Hathaway annual meeting.

I would say that these are Andy Payor's best effort to date and belong in the upper pantheon of cone speakers.

I find Stereophile's Audio Glossary an invaluable resource for brushing up on audiophile terminology.

It will be interesting to see how the Lyra's compare to the similarly priced Magico M6's once the M6's start getting demo'd at major shows like Munich High End .
