Tube Life for Shindo Haut Brion & Masseto

    Hello,

What kind of tube life do you generally get for shindo amps and preamps? I have had my gear for many, many years and never really had an issue. They have been incredibly reliable. I do get the odd pop once and a while and perhaps a little loss in overall power. Please let me know your experiences.

It also depends on how hard the circuit is working the tubes.
Micro Seiki SX-8000 air bearing table, SME 312s arm, SME 3012R arn, Dynavector XV-1s cartridge, Lyra Etna SL cartridge, ARC Ref 3 phono stage, Otari MX-55 2 track R2R, Ampex 350 tape repros, Roon Nucleus Plus music server, HiFi Rose 150B DAC, ARC Ref 6, ARC Ref 75 with KT-150s, Parasound JC5 amp , JBL 4345 speakers, Viero Equilibro Level 3 speaker cables, and Definitive Technology Ref subs.

The variable "working point" isn't one in this case. Its specified with all Shindo amps and therefore unchangeable. So the only variable thats left is tube rolling with different manufacturers.
And on that, my statement is still valid.

The Shindo has special tubes with special branding. Beware of tube rolling!

I recently bought a used Masseto. Judging by the faceplate and style of knobs, I'm guessing that its around 15 years old. It sounded great and I thought I had plenty of years left on the tubes. I replaced the power supply tubes and called it good.
Recently, while trying to track down noise I decided to replace the line stage tubes. I was wrong....they needed to be replaced...it really made a difference. Phono tubes are next.

Any serious tube amp / preamp user should have a tube tester nearby imho. Either owing it or being able to have an easy access to one.
I have an Amplitrex AT1000 at home.
Recently, I ordered a set of replacement tubes from Nagra for my PLP preamp. I was fed up with using NOS tubes not being up to specs.
Nagra makes the kit rather expensive ( 650 euros ) for 3 x 12AT7 and 5 x 12AX7 from EH, these tubes cost normally about 30 euros each. But they charge a lot for a very hard selection.
I tested all of them. Guess what ? One tube ( a 12AT7 ) was completely out of specs !
I sent the test results to my dealer. A new tube was sent by Nagra.

So even when paying a high price for careful selection and matching, tou still can get something wrong. And without a tester you will never know it.
Investing high amounts of money in tube gear, and not being able to have the tubes tested easily when needed makes no sense to me.

Electron tubes are a business that should be done with great care. Never trust a branding alone, there is much scam outside on the internet. Buy from trusted dealers and only measured tubes that measure NOS or better.
A tube tester is a great thing to have to recheck the purchased tubes. But it comes not cheap those days, for that kind of test equipment one can buy some serious electron tube sets.
With Shindo, the tubes run most often very conservative ratings, only the power amp output tubes run higher currents.
