Shindo in Seattle or Portland?
Hi everyone,
Taking my new to me Altec Valencias home and the more I think and read, the more I want to try Shindo.
I can't get to LA anytime soon, so I'm wondering if anyone in the PNW might be willing to share a listen.
I'm happy to trade Walla Walla wine for your troubles!
Thanks,
Steve

Re: Shindo in Seattle or Portland?
Congrats on the Valencias! I've had the Flamencos for almost 2 years now (very similar to Valencias), it sounds very good with a Shindo Cortese so your on the right track! I don't live in the PNW but I hope someone can demo Shindo for you. Best of luck!

If I had any Shindo I'd be game. Walla Walla wine is really good!

I run Altec 604's with Shindo Cortese ,the most realistic sound i have ever heard in 30 years of going through a lot of hi end gear. Altec loves Shindo , You won't regret it.

Are you at Walla Walla Vinters or at another winery there?

Re: Shindo in Seattle or Portland?
Ordinary Altec are only of mediocre quality. Maybe for those who havent heard real excellent speakers they might be the top class, but believe me, they are not. Mostly they have this golden glam california sound but too much of it. Not a real tastefull speaker. Too much of everything and not refined quality. A booom booom woofer that excites many people at first glance and drives attention.

Re: Shindo in Seattle or Portland?
You obviously never heard the real Altec 604 which is the 604A , which is what i use. I believe Shindo himself used a modified version to voice his electronics . There is no boom boom and i don't know what California Glam is.
Do try to hear one with proper electronics, makes most speakers sound constipated and unable to breath properly. i am using human traits cause most people can relate to that, rather than audio jargon.

Re: Shindo in Seattle or Portland?
You refer to the first Altec designs which had paper cone edge and phenolic spider. Its known that those kind of speakers sound differently to the newer Altec incarnations. Shindo has modded nearly everything on his Altec 604, even the cabinet is a complete new design. Not comparable with the usual Altec stuff that sold in thousands. You know the pleasures of a glass of Chateau Latour? Thats the difference to ordinary Altec products.

Altec Laguna. One of those typical Altec boom-box designs and we all know how it sounds.

Re: Shindo in Seattle or Portland?
Listening to that booom booom sound in golden glam California right now. I'll never get rid of my Flamencos. But, I guess, given my zip code, I shouldn't expect to know any better. I suppose there's an aphorism here...
I find it interesting that outright dismissal is usually done by way of metaphor. Aren't us Altec folks supposed to have a monopoly on less penetrable uses of language?
Personally, I've been interested in exploring Bozak's urban woodsy green Long Island Sound sound. The description is just so magical sounding.
Best,
Andrew

Re: Shindo in Seattle or Portland?
Sorry. You are correct. Ignore my post.
You should reach out to the Shindo guys. I'm sure that they could point you to happy customers in your area. Customers who are so happy that they don't spend much time on the forums. I've found Matt Rotunda to be incredibly helpful. I am not a Shindo owner, but I am a very happy customer of his. He is very kind to questioning, even if he can't help you out.
Also, since you seem to be a winemaker, I imagine that you are occasionally near the bay area? Lots of Shindo around there. Or so I hear.

Re: Shindo in Seattle or Portland?
As a newbie on Shindo, there is no such thing as a simple question on this topic. Everything has a deeper meaning and understanding is needed. Someone mentioned his Altec speaker in combination with Shindo electronics. I suppose it will be better to hear a whole Shindou system where everything fits as mentioned. Otherwise its just a puzzle and a piece of the sonics.

Re: Shindo in Seattle or Portland?
In response to your original question. I have a Shindo system and you are welcome to come have a listen. And although I shouldn't really speak for him, I have a good friend nearby that has Shindo as well and he has a pair of Altecs that he uses in his system once in a while. We live in the Vancouver B.C. area. I'm about 20 mins north of the Blaine border crossing. From what Matt Rotunda and Johnathan Halpern say, Altec's are great with Shindo.

Re: Shindo in Seattle or Portland?
Steve,
I don't know if you'll find this helpful, but here goes.
I do not own Shindo gear. I do own a Don Sachs KT-88 amp and his 6SN7 preamp. My current home is in Corvallis, OR, but that home is on the market. We will be moving to Vancouver, WA sometime this year.
I don't have plans for a road trip to your neck of the woods, but you're welcome to come visit if you like. I don't know how transportable your speakers are. I'll have Daedalus Apollos in my system.
I just noticed this ad on AC:
Gorgeous amp in pristine condition. No apologies of any kind needed here. Complete with original box and power cord. Different sources quote it as having 12 or 15 watts. 3 sets of tested 6V6 tubes, including original United Electronic tubes and a matched set of NOS JAN 1986 Philips 6V6GTs recommended by Pitch Perfect Audio as well as a set of Tung-Sols. Also includes some NOS 1987 Philips 6AW8A tubes (2 in amp – 4 new in box). You should not need to re-tube for a long, long time. I have not a lot to add to the many reviews and articles on the net - simply one of the finest sounding amps out there. Contact me with any questions. Price includes shipping in CONUS and PayPal fees and and is absolutely non-negotiable. $3500 firm. glynnwilson@comcast.net 318-734-4655 I also have a Shindo Auriges Pre-amp I will sell as well.

Re: Shindo in Seattle or Portland?
Don Sachs KT-88
What for heavens sake has this one in common with Shindo? Toroid output trans, no way. Have you ever seen such thing on old equipment with some value to be a classic component? Shindo uses complete different circuits, topology and materials. Your system may sound just mediocre, but for what reasons should one visit an owner with a bread and butter system on dislplay every corner of the city? I think you are in the wrong league here.

Aw, shucks, Walter.
I was trying to be helpful. Thank you ever so much for your eloquent head butt.
I only just now noticed this thread is in the Shindo circle. If I had realized this earlier , I would not have posted. My apologies to everyone - well, perhaps not everyone. I will be more attentive in the future.
Regards,
Michael
