    Re: Why no turntable?

If I had to choose between CD and Vinyl it would definitely be CD.

Awesome. Great performance of one of my favorite rock songs ever.

Re: What was your first high-end component ever?

You asked from first component to present day. A whole system was the beginning, in 1990:

    Cambridge CD-3 CD player
    Stax SRM-T1 tube headphone amp
    Stax 'Professional' electrostatic headphones...
  4. Re: What are some dymanic driver/non-horn speakers that have that "jump" factor?

Next to having had regular exposure to the M Project, I have heard stunning, extraordinary dynamics on piano and orchestral music from the Q3.

Things always depend on the entire system context and...
  5. Re: What are some dymanic driver/non-horn speakers that have that "jump" factor?

Sorry to disagree, Keith, but you don't have enough experience with Magico (while you do have more experience than me on other things).
  6. Re: What are some dymanic driver/non-horn speakers that have that "jump" factor?

This is not a definition. What does the horn speaker do so that it is "as if you were listening to a horn speaker"?

Do you mean by "jump factor" vividness, dynamics?

Re: To Pre or not to Pre? What shall thy be?

Makes you wonder why manufacturers waste resources on implementing such a VC in the first place, instead of making a fixed output, which would lower the price. Perhaps they feel pressured into just...

Re: To Pre or not to Pre? What shall thy be?

Understood, that seems to be the consensus which I have no reason to doubt.

Re: To Pre or not to Pre? What shall thy be?

Yes, I read what you wrote, it's "not quite up to the level of a really good solid state preamp, but still good".

In any case, I am just confirming that it's better with a high quality preamp.

Re: To Pre or not to Pre? What shall thy be?

...and I don't accept the notion that a preamp is necessarily colored or less transparent and resolving. Perhaps the preamp modules in the MSB Reference and Select II DACs are the most transparent...

Re: To Pre or not to Pre? What shall thy be?

I have heard the VC of the Premier being bettered quite dramatically in a system by a Spectral DMA 30-SV preamp. I think it does not do justice to the quality of the DAC.

Re: To Pre or not to Pre? What shall thy be?

Depends on the preamp. Mine delivers both the full tone and all the detail you want -- micro-detail of timbre, separation of instruments etc.

I also would not describe it as less exact; I...
  13. Re: What has the most audible impact in a digital HI-Fi set up after speakers, amps and DAC?

    That is also true.
  14. Re: What has the most audible impact in a digital HI-Fi set up after speakers, amps and DAC?

Yes, it was weird, to say the least. I don't understand what the guy is claiming to demonstrate, and what he is actually doing. I don't hear voices around my power lines, that's for sure ;). It...
  15. Re: What has the most audible impact in a digital HI-Fi set up after speakers, amps and DAC?

Actually, I have been very vocal about power cords. About power conditioners, not so much. And I cannot remember ever having discussed Shunyata products, but if I did, please feel free to correct me....
  16. Re: What has the most audible impact in a digital HI-Fi set up after speakers, amps and DAC?

Well, I didn't want to negatively mention any brand names, but since you brought up Shunyata:

A friend had a Shunyata Denali on loan, and since I really, really wanted to hear it, I traveled quite...

Re: To Pre or not to Pre? What shall thy be?

ALWAYS preamp! Digital volume controls generally suck, and so do often passive buffered analog preamps. I have had a Pass B1 buffer for too long, and I cannot believe how much of a difference the...
  18. Re: What has the most audible impact in a digital HI-Fi set up after speakers, amps and DAC?

Not quite. In my experience, also recently once again, power conditioners almost always reduce dynamic contrast, liveliness and energy of the presentation (reliably the latter two, mostly the first...

May I ask what is a speed lock? Thanks.

Re: Are subwoofers bad for music?

As Jeremey said, he knows that the higher end JL Audios are phenomenal, and it's true. My JL Audio F112v2 subs are blisteringly fast, and they have DSP as well (by microphone calibration).

Re: Are subwoofers bad for music?

Do you have your subs on the floor? Raising them with ASC SubTraps may help:

I wouldn't want to listen to my system with JL subs without those...

    Re: JSQT's System

Congrats, Jeremey. Those are great speakers. The Volti Rival/BorderPatrol system at AXPONA 2017 was my favorite among the systems that I heard at that show. I was even contemplating a purchase of...

Re: What happened to tone controls?

Indeed. As I said above, the tone controls of my Octave HP 700 preamp are very transparent, and unlike the controls in the preamp that Ralph has, they are in fact frequency linear in "0" position, as...
