  1. Re: Nord One Up Ncore NC500 amps, Class D ready for prime time .....

Inviting George around is always a mistake! :D
  2. Re: Nord One Up Ncore NC500 amps, Class D ready for prime time .....

If the other amplifiers have the same gain as the Nord and you are using the same pre-amp with each then you are unlikely to perceive a significant difference in volume.
  3. Re: Nord One Up Ncore NC500 amps, Class D ready for prime time .....

This figure is the peak output current which the NC500 can deliver for just 200ms to deal with large transients into low impedances. This more than sufficient to deal with the most demanding speaker...
  4. Re: Nord One Up Ncore NC500 amps, Class D ready for prime time .....

28A is good and in terms of bang for buck is excellent.

Many manufacturers tend to shy away from quoting a figure.
  5. Re: Nord One Up Ncore NC500 amps, Class D ready for prime time .....

28A Maximum according to the data sheet.
  6. Re: Nord One Up Ncore NC500 amps, Class D ready for prime time .....

George 47 who wrote a review of the Nord has the Hattor preamp and used it successfully with the Nord. Works best with the balanced output version apparently. The Nord is not lacking in speed and...
  7. Re: Nord One Up Ncore NC500 amps, Class D ready for prime time .....

I wouldn't spend 12k on a Hypex amp, there's no need to, the Nord and others come in close to 1.5k. The fact that manufacturers are successfully selling Hypex amps for 12k plus just shows you their...
  8. Re: Nord One Up Ncore NC500 amps, Class D ready for prime time .....

True but in bang for the buck terms Hypex is hard to beat!
  9. Re: Nord One Up Ncore NC500 amps, Class D ready for prime time .....

The Nord stereo version is effectively a dual mono amp, it has the parts of two monoblocks in one box(two NC500's with input buffer board and two SMPS1200 power supplies). General opinion is there is...
  10. Re: Nord One Up Ncore NC500 amps, Class D ready for prime time .....

The Hypex modules are designed to operate with balanced inputs, added circuitry to facilitate RCA inputs is always a compromise. I wouldn't use anything but balanced XLR if you want to extract the...
  11. Re: Nord One Up Ncore NC500 amps, Class D ready for prime time .....

Same input impedance, same gain and same opamp choice, it's not rocket science the two circuits have got to be very similar?
  12. Re: Nord One Up Ncore NC500 amps, Class D ready for prime time .....

So Apollon have not used the published Sonic Imagery input buffer circuit as you surmised? This makes the Apollon even more likely to be a Nord rip-off?
  13. Re: Nord One Up Ncore NC500 amps, Class D ready for prime time .....

I have heard of two other users who have had this same problem, multiple operations of the switch get it working again. Seems a strange problem since they are a high quality switch from a reputable...
  14. Re: Nord One Up Ncore NC500 amps, Class D ready for prime time .....

There are a host of manufacturers making Ncore based amplifiers in various flavours, Bel Canto, ATI, Hattor Audio, Alexus-Bache Audio, Acoustic Imagery to name but a few.
  15. Re: Nord One Up Ncore NC500 amps, Class D ready for prime time .....

I've seen the low noise Sonic Imagery circuit, it's an adaption of the Hypex designed input buffer with low input impedance and additional filtering to rein in the bandwidth of the 994. It would seem...
  16. Re: Nord One Up Ncore NC500 amps, Class D ready for prime time .....

They are offering a custom input board with the same voltage regulators and same range of discrete opamps as Nord?
  17. Re: Nord One Up Ncore NC500 amps, Class D ready for prime time .....

Anyone seen these, they look to be a rip-off of the Nord: http://www.apollonaudio.com/apollon-hypex-nc500-class-d-amplifier-nc800-sl/
  18. Re: Nord One Up Ncore NC500 amps, Class D ready for prime time .....

I'm using a Nordost Heimdall II mains lead with my Nord mainly because I had it before the Nord arrived but clearly a lot better than the stock lead supplied with it.

    Certainly worth experimenting...
  19. Re: Nord One Up Ncore NC500 amps, Class D ready for prime time .....

150mA is a large offset, wouldn't want to push that into my speakers. I would guess there is a solution but would require some custom mods to the buffer board solely for the Orange amp?
  20. Re: Nord One Up Ncore NC500 amps, Class D ready for prime time .....

Colin, how big is the offset?
  21. Re: Nord One Up Ncore NC500 amps, Class D ready for prime time .....

Glad you are enjoying the new amps!

First off, I found they sound much better when using the fully balanced input. Using unbalanced RCA with Neutrik adapters was distinctly disappointing in...
  22. Re: Nord One Up Ncore NC500 amps, Class D ready for prime time .....

Asked Colin about them and he said they have tested the Orange opamps though they will not release them until they are completely happy.
  23. Re: Nord One Up Ncore NC500 amps, Class D ready for prime time .....

I'm quite interested in those op-amps, was thinking about just buying a couple to try!
  24. Re: Nord One Up Ncore NC500 amps, Class D ready for prime time .....

Sorry, my reply should have been more specific. The ambient temperature they refer to is the temperature of the surrounding air which affects the amplifiers ability to disperse heat into the...
  25. Re: Nord One Up Ncore NC500 amps, Class D ready for prime time .....

I think the 100W spec is for running the naked NC500 module without additional cooling and I bet Hypex added it to protect themselves from any numpty engineer who tries run the module on the bench....
