    Re: Attenuators

Now things are getting much more complicated.
With a setup like this, all bets are off.

    Re: Attenuators

attenuators don't take away the detail, they reduce the background noise. It's about system 'Gain Structure' in getting each stage at it's optimum level.

    Re: Attenuators

While I don't know anything about 'Rothwell attenuators', Markertek in the US has several other nice ones.

  5. Re: Video: World’s Best High-End Speakers 2021

    To narrow the field.
And it's more than challenging to do good listening tests.
Modern speaker measurements like the Klippel won't give the final rating but will eliminate a lot of the overpriced...
  6. Re: Video: World’s Best High-End Speakers 2021

When discussing best speakers, the first step is to look at their Klippel measurements.
If a manufacture can arrange to get the speakers to a show, then they can arrange to get the speakers tested.
  7. Re: Power grid interference: What does it look like measured with different tools?

The only place these trivial AC line irregularities have any impact is at the audio output of your components.
An well designed component will be able to deal with much larger irregularities.
    If...
  8. Re: What do you hear different using Balanced XLR Cables?

Actually Audio Engineering Society standard AES48 is about how the cable shield is attached at the chassis connectors.
AES48 is only a small part of the Neil Muncy(RIP) 1994/5 paper.
    "Noise...
  9. Re: Does size matter? Capacitors - few big vs many smaller

Older amp designs used large caps because they were readily available at a reasonable price then. Now, modern industrial and commercial products use much smaller caps. These smaller caps use modern...

    Re: Signal ground connection question

Most well designed components, attach the audio circuit common (aka signal ground) to the chassis at a single point near the input connectors.
  11. Re: Does size matter? Capacitors - few big vs many smaller

Actually it probably comes down to these (and other) factors:
    a] enclosure profile height.
    b] cost per microfarad.
    c] manufacturing assembly costs.
  12. Re: Does size matter? Capacitors - few big vs many smaller

a] there are good amplifier designs with large capacitors.
b] there are poor amplifier designs with large capacitors.
c] there are good amplifier designs with small capacitors.
    d] there are poor...
  13. Re: What do you hear different using Balanced XLR Cables?

Yep. If the interconnects are short (say 3 meters/10 feet) and all the components are powered from the same AC mains wall outlet, it's doubtful that you will hear any differences. Note that in pro...
  14. Re: What do you hear different using Balanced XLR Cables?

For other's, Audio Engineering Society standard AES48 is about balanced interconnects using XLR connectors. In the standard, XLR pin#1 is the shield and it is attached to the chassis at the connector...

    Re: Formula One

Wow, an F1 race with more green flag, on track passes than an IndyCar race on rather similar tracks.
  16. Re: Vibration impact on cables - theoretical analysis

a] What about the circuit impedance in the above equation?
b] Remember that a cable has two conductors and the signal is differential mode while this induced voltage is common mode.
    c] Some...

Re: Received 2nd Covid shot today

They now have the downtown indoor arena site up to speed. Air Force medics are doing 6000 jabs a day. People without internet can sign-up at city libraries also free bus tickets.

Re: Received 2nd Covid shot today

If last Spring the medical community was told that any of the vaccines were going to be as good as they turned out to be, it would have been called aspirational or wishful thinking.

Re: Received 2nd Covid shot today

    Why still wear a mask?
Because your vaccination may not work against the next new variant.
  20. Re: Toroidal transformer suitable for Mundorf Mlytic recaping of Audiolab 8000A

a] much larger capacitors are sometimes hard on the bridge rectifiers.
b] don't recall any reason way they would be hard on the transformer.
c] transformer hum is often caused by higher line...

Re: Corners, Side Walls and Openings

Room tuning is a lot trickier than some home theater buffs and audiophiles think! Some acoustic experts say it's close to impossible. Only the newest high-tech DSP units come close.
